Bond 22 gearing up for pre-production

As the world awaits the debut of Daniel Craig as the latest Agent 007, the producers of "Casino Royale" are busy making plans for the next chapter in the James Bond franchise. U.K.-based helmer Roger Michell is in negotiations to direct the follow-up to "Casino Royale," which has a working title of "Bond 22."

He hasn't even graced the gun sight yet, but Daniel Craig is already gearing up for another go-round as 007.

The English thesp, who's getting ready to make his big debut on Nov. 17 as the sixth actor to play James Bond in MGM's Casino Royale, the 21st installment in the four decade-old franchise, is aboard to star in a follow-up now in development.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Roger Michell, the helmer behind the 1999 Hugh Grant-Julia Roberts romantic comedy hit, Notting Hill, and the 2002 Ben Affleck-Samuel L. Jackson thriller miss, Changing Lanes, is in talks to direct the as-yet-untitled project, currently known only as Bond 22.

No word on the story line, but the trade says it comes from an original idea suggested by longtime Bond producer Michael Wilson.

In any case, the move is a big thumbs-up from the Bond brain trust and comes in the wake of withering fan criticism of Craig's casting, with some calling for the ouster of the 38-year-old actor before he had the chance to swig his first martini onscreen.

Back in February, when the Martin Campbell-helmed Casino was still shooting, detractors stirred controversy by launching CraigNotBond.com, to protest the hiring of the first blond Bond as a replacement for fan favorite Pierce Brosnan. The anti-Craig faction called him an "unknown and unattractive" performer and vowed to boycott any Bond film in which he starred. The site further petitioned Eon Productions to revoke Craig's license to kill and bring back Brosnan.

But Craig quickly wracked up an endorsement from original 007 Sean Connery, who rushed to his defense, praising him as a "terrific choice," and three other 007 predecessors, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and Brosnan, also gave Craig their votes of confidence. Meanwhile, Judi Dench, who plays spy boss M, has also called his performance in Casino "edgy," while Bond babe Caterina Murino told the BBC last week that her costar is a "great actor" who will give fans "something they've never seen before."

While Craig has public appeared unfazed by the fan backlash, Murino said that the criticism has left him feeling a little shaken, but insisted that his rugged depiction of Bond will please fans in the end.

"When he's going to kill someone, he looks like a real killer. When he kisses me, when he makes love, he's so sexy," the Italian actress said, adding that the latest adventure in the Bond series will be much more violent than previous entries.

Bond producers apparently are betting big on him, too. The BBC also reported that Craig is signed to play Bond through 2012, giving him plenty of opportunities to hone those secret agent skills.

Craig most recently starred as an assassin in Steven Spielberg's Oscar-nominated Munich. His other credits include Lara Croft: Tomb Raider The Road to Perdition, Layer Cake and Enduring Love, which was also directed by Michell.
I've also read that there may be a sequel (?) to Casino Royale and people in the frame include the rejected Bonds Jude Law, Dougray Scott and Pierce Brosnan.

...Shaken... but NOT, I repeat NOT, stirred!

Ow no, not this whole discussion again  :D

Anyway, Jude Law as Bond would be cool to see. Pierce can fuck off for all I care. Never rated him.

I think Daniel Craig will do a good job on this (IF ofcourse the material is right), but I'm not sure if he will really 'feel' like a Bond. He looks more like a 006 or a 008... you know: the guy Bond hangs out with for some beers, who's also dangerous, ahs an agenda of his own, ruthless, smart etc.

Hopefully they'll have a memorable storyline and a memorable villain this time...

:D Don't worry I won't start that again.
As for Craig, well, I'm giving him a chance. The trailer looked very good though he doesn't "look" like Bond to me still :?

I know what you mean about the trailer Grim, he doesn't look Bond, however I will reserve judgement when the movie is out. I never rated Craig, until I saw Layer Cake, and really enjoyed that movie, so now kinda hoping he be good as Bond. He has got the "I will kill u" look to him :)

I watch Borne Identity on ITV3 (alway like that movie), and the way Clive Owen play that role as the killer, make me think, he will be perfect for Bond. He had the look of Bond in that movie, I wonder if the Bond Producer actually saw that movie and thought of him??

How can you possibly say Bond is running thin? After 20 films and 60 odd years. Surely if you consider it thin you did eons ago?

Huh? It says Daniel Craig will be back for more.

To you not me  , as long as a dreg like Die Another Day doesn't happen again that is.

The thing is we all know they follow a formula but that's the entire point.

I just wish they'd not kill the villain for once, that's always a cop out. I loved how Blofeld came back for more.

yes i did consider it thin ages ago, but then i never really saw the charm of these movies, they are all the same, all cheesy one liners with an egotisitical guy in the lead saving the world from some meglomaniac ... heres a new storyline ... bond dies and the world is destroyed...maybe more interesting viewing, i mean a movie is no fun when you can predict whats gonna happen and how its gonna end IMO

:D , sorry but you have missed the entire point of Bond. By it's nature it's been thin since part 2 all those decades ago.

The "egotisitical guy" aspect agreed doesn't work so much any more but to change Bond now would be all wrong.
how its gonna end IMO
Titanic won 11 Oscars and millions loved it but we all knew that darn ship was going to sink. Does it necessarily matter? I don't think so, it's the journey that's important.

60 odd years?

The first one was made 44 years ago in 1962. 8)

I don't trust anyone who doesn't like James Bond. It's just not, well, natural. :D

French actor, Mathieu Amalric, has been cast as the villain.

Nov. 7th 2008 is the target date for the next Bond.

As long as the this one continues with the post-Bourne, reality-grounded Bond formula that we saw in Casino Royale, I'll be happy.

Clive Owen?! He would've sunk the franchise to an even deader state than Lee Tamahori ever could. One of the most talentless "A-list" actors in Hollywood today. The first 30 minutes of "Derailed" is more than enough proof of this.

Post-Bourne meh! Weren't Dalton's Bonds tough? The comparison just gets a bit silly, especially when except for the grounded feel they have virtually nothing in common anyway. The grounded feel would've happened anyway, Brosnan was chucked off before Supremacy was even out. The producers wanted a change regardless of Bourne.

As to Bond 22 it's worrying Martin Campbell isn't onboard. I hope the new director is up to it.

He surprised me in Elizabeth: The Golden Age and was actually pretty good but otherwise he's always been just awful.

Brosnan was out because they had finally gotten the rights to do Casino Royale, so they needed a younger actor.

I'm very glad that Brosnan is out, cause I never liked him as Bond. And I'm even happier that Craig has proven to be such a great choice. Casino Royale is a great start of a new series :)

Last word on the street is that Almaric will be Blofeld ! Would love if they returned the main arch nemesis, new style (not the parody in Austin Powers)

This will have Blofeld, really? I thought they could never use that names or other connections due to complicated legal wranglings.

Maybe they sorted them out. AFAIK it's a new story so it would be surprising if it had Blofeld. Mathieu Amalric looks like he could play Blofeld.

To say that Bourne had no direct impact on Casino Royale is totally naive.

I never said that. I said it would've happened anyway, maybe not in the same way but it would've still happened.

Twice as much action could be cool but it could also be bad if the rest is forgotten.

Some info from Wikipedia:

For Your Eyes Only is a collection of James Bond short stories by Ian Fleming. It was first published by Jonathan Cape on April 11, 1960. It marked a change of pace for Ian Fleming, who previously had written only full-length novels featuring James Bond.

The collection contains five short stories "From a View to a Kill", "For Your Eyes Only", "Quantum of Solace", "Risico" and "The Hildebrand Rarity".

The title story of the collection lent its name to the 12th official James Bond film in the EON Productions series, For Your Eyes Only. Released in 1981, it was the fifth film to star Roger Moore as the British Secret Service agent, Commander James Bond. The film used elements and characters from the short stories "For Your Eyes Only" and "Risico" from this collection. "From a View To a Kill" lent its title to the 14th Bond film, A View to a Kill (1985). Plot elements from "The Hildebrand Rarity" were incorporated in the 16th Bond film, Licence to Kill (1989). The twenty-second Bond film, scheduled for release in 2008, is entitled Quantum of Solace.[1]

The title of the collection is derived from a piece of jargon often used in government circles with regards to classified information. An "Eyes Only" notification indicates either a) the information contained is for the knowledge of authorised readers only; b) information contained is not to be discussed with anyone; or both of these.

Quote: "'Quantum of Solace' is not a spy story and Bond appears only in the background. Told in the style of W Somerset Maugham, the tale has Bond attending a boring dinner party at the Government House in Nassau with a group of socialites he can't stand."

Quantum of Solace, sounds more like the title to a Star Trek film. :D
