Honour Killing

Post by grim_tales »

I don't know what to say :( Just heard about this on ITV News - truly shocking and despicable.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/5179162.stm

A man has been jailed for life for murdering his sister after she fell in love with an asylum seeker.

Greengrocer Azhar Nazir, 30, and his cousin Imran Mohammed, 17, stabbed Samaira Nazir 18 times at the family home in Southall in April 2005.

The 25-year-old recruitment consultant was killed after she asked to marry an Afghan man - instead of marrying someone in the Pakistani family circle.

An Old Bailey judge detained Mohammed, also convicted of murder, for life.

The teenager was told he must serve a minimum of 10 years in youth detention, while Nazir will be jailed for at least 20 years.

The court had earlier heard Samaira fell in love with Salman Mohammed, who befriended the family after arriving in the UK in 2000.

She lost her life for loving the wrong man
Sally Howes, prosecuting

They began a secret relationship but when Miss Nazir asked for permission to marry him, her family reacted angrily.

Mr Mohammed had been warned by Nazir: "We can get you anywhere if you get married, even if you are not in this country."

The couple had last seen each other about an hour before Miss Nazir was killed.

She had tried to talk to her mother about the problem at a relative's house, but her mother refused. The pair returned to the family home.

Samaira Nazir had pleaded to be allowed to marry

The attack that followed, described by Judge Christopher Moss as barbaric, was witnessed by two young nieces.

Miss Nazir tried to flee but her brother dragged her back into the house where the assault continued.

A neighbour heard screams and knocked on the door. Nazir told her his sister was suffering a fit, but as she returned to her home she heard Miss Nazir shout "You are not my mother any more".

Prosecutors said the family thought Mr Mohammed was only after their money.

'Family disapproved'

Miss Nazir's father was arrested and bailed during the investigation but fled to Pakistan.

Sally Howes, prosecuting, said: "Following a heated argument about her relationship with Salman, she was attacked and killed.

"She lost her life for loving the wrong man."

Judge Moss lifted a ban on identifying Mohammed, a distant cousin of Samaira, who was said to have treated him like another brother.

Sentencing Nazir, he said: "You were her judge and jury, although you may not have been alone.

"You claimed to have loved your sister but were guilty of orchestrating her murder."

Nazir Afzal, area director of the Crown Prosecution Service, said: "Samaira was murdered because she loved the wrong person, in her family's eyes.

"In that sense, it was an honour killing to protect the perceived status of the family, to mark their disapproval."

................

I really don't know how anyone could do that, the mother and father don't deserve to be parents, its all the more evil as other family members took part in it.

It's how the situation currently stands for far too many people. An unfortunate set of circumstances for anyone to find themselves in, moreso for girls, as they hold the honour in many Asian families. However, even all that being said, I still cannot even begin to make the mental leap from having your reputation in the community 'ruined' to killing anyone, let alone your own children.

As Grim has already said, how they ever could consider themselves to be parents, I don't know.

Yep, sadly this kinda thing still happens, and although not very often, still way too many times.

In my old neighbourhood there was a young kid, about 14-15 years old I guess. he always played football with us and I liked him. it was a good, decent kid.

Anyway, one day I go to the football court and hear about what happened: he and his brother had killed his sister and beaten up a white guy, because he and her sister were dating. Obviously i wa svery shocked, and so was everyone else.
Some say it was actually the father who had stabbed his daughter, then they had the youngest son confess to it so he would be the one punished, and since he wa sstill a minor and not a providor, he wouldget the least jailtime plus it wouldnt hurt the family too much financially. The father fled the country right after that btw...
I guess the kid is still in jail.

Personally I'm not sure if he actually killed his sister, or his brother did, or his father. I just feel sad. Obviously for the dead girl and for her boyfriend, but also for this 15 year old kid who had to kill his sister. For honor. Whatever that is.

Anyway, what can you say about it. The people who would kill anyone over these kind of reasons, are just nuts. It's inexcusable.

This kind of news just fills me with sadness and hopelesness...

In fact, just looking at the news today, seeing how at the moment the whole world seems so fucked up, with american soldiers behaving like beasts in iraq, Israel at war against Palestinians and Libanon, India and Pakistan could be at eachother's throat again, North Korea is provoking Japan and the USA, and here in Holland we have a right wings bitch on immigration who keeps making mistake after mistake after mistake, yet she gets to stay in her seast cause her political party would lose way too many votes if they'd correct her or replaced her... plus I just heard a young woman was probably pushed in front of a train at Amsterdam this late afternoon...

And the sad thing is, I'm sure I've even left things out...

Disgusting. They should put a hole in the back of each of their heads and let them dwell on the meaning of honour in hell. Poor girl. The government and Muslim communities need to stop this from happening in the UK. It's unacceptable for such barbarism in 2006.

Ugh. Didn't want to do this, but here we go.
It's not just in Muslim communities that this occurs. Yes, this particular case involved Muslims, but it's a cultural ideal - South East Asian culture, which has a lot of cross-over 'tradition' between faiths.
So it's the government and South East Asian communities that need to stop this happening in the UK, and elsewhere if they can manage it.

Agree with your initial statement in terms of rage, if not the method.

Thankyou Kurgan for explaining that to Mark :)

Yes this is NOTHING to do with religion, but to everything to do with culture!!. For this family they really can't call themselves muslims, as they killed an innocent girl. Lucky I have never seen this mentally in my family. My dad is pakistani, but he married my mum who was from Kenya. (Their family was originally from India). My wife who is british, comes from kenya as well, so I'm glad I have never seen this 'Don't insult the family way' thought.

It has shocked all Asian people in Britain (so I've heard) not only Muslims. To kill anyone, let alone your children because you "disapprove" of them in any way is barbaric. :(

Fair enough about the cultural element, I didn't realise this was common among other Asian cultures. I've only ever heard it in relation to Muslims, who appear, at least in the UK, to be the sole perpetrators. The worst you hear about Hindus is that cremation in a field story.

Its happened so many times in the UK thats its uncountable latley, its just sad really that they think its right. Burn in hell I say.

My friend was beaten to shit for similar reasons by his own fucking family and yet he still speaks to them  now thats sad, I would have grassed them up in a heart beat as the are certainly not my family when they throw you out of the house, destroy everything you own and then beat you with metal bars

Pathetic ways in which certain people live.
