Going to Singapore soon - what area to stay in? + Fiji tips?

On 5-6 aug I'm gonna be in Singapore on the way back to the UK after my 10 months abroad.

Thing is, I know NOTHING about Singapore, where are the good areas to stay/go etc.

So is there anyone here who has been there before and can offer me some good tips? Is Little India or Chinatown a good place? I've found cheap hostels, and the ones I'm considering range from about 5-9 quid per night, but location wise they are spread about a bit, so don't want to book myself into one that ends up being miles away from the places I wanna go!

I wanna see the main part of the city, and go to some good food stall places and the good shopping centres. Then if I've got time, I'd see the other cultural stuff. As it is just a stop over it is just a scratch the surface trip to get the main gist for Singapore.

So any help would be great!

Also if anyone has been to Fiji, can you let me know which islands are good cheap must go to islands? I'm there for 3 weeks as of this sat.

I know there are some that are around Fiji$100 per night and that includes your food, but I've heard that there are others nearer the Fiji$30 mark or something like that? So any hints or tips would be great again.
