Note: All 3 DVDs are interlaced.

Edge-enhancement is present on both transfers, however the UK disc is extremely sharp.
EDIT: The french transfer is obviously a port from the R2UK.

R2UK: Once again, edge-enhancement doesn't damage the transfer. It actually brings more depth to the picture.
R2FR: With the lack of contrast boosting, the french DVD shows more detail in white areas.

Subtitles seem more accurate on the UK disc, but they're also less powerful.
EDIT: That's what I was hoping for. The french subtitles are by far the most accurate, precise and full of nuances.
With the lack of DTS and (slightly) dumbed-down subtitles, it's hard to recommend the UK disc, despite the major improvement in picture quality.
As usual, it depends on the size of your screen and whether you can notice the difference in PQ on your screen.
EDIT:
The french DVD has a japanese DTS track.
If you speak french, toss the UK disc and buy the french one.

I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Actually, both discs are interlaced.A real-world test would show the UK DVD is pretty bad, no?
So, ghosting should be equal on both discs.
Because I want every release imaginable to be sitting on my shelf.why the hell did you buy the R2UK when you knew that a much better French release is coming?
Just to make sure I've got the best possible edition of this masterpiece.
Totally unfair comparison:
HK left, UK right.
