Disney's Tarzan - Any Good?

Post by bradavon »

That's the first question. The second how does it compare to The Lion King? The ONLY Disney film I still find enjoyable at my ripe young age of 27.

The rest are kids movies really, with the probable exception of The Jungle Book.

Anyway I've been offered the 1 Disc version for my Terminator DVD (which I can't shift).

I quite liked it when I saw it in theatres. Although Rosie O'Donnell's male(!!) character was pretty annoying. It's one of their more mature movies before they went to hell with shit like Emperor's New Groove and Home on the Range. You should be able to sit through it without feeling "oh, this is really childish crap"

Also the Tarzan "vine surfing" scenes were quite impressive..

The theme of closeness of the Family unit was quite effective IMO and also the Phil Collins tracks were good. Tarzan's adoptive gorilla father has trouble accepting him and the actor playing him was very good (I can't remember who it was).

Stacks up quite well I thought.

Cheers. I'll sleep on it but will probably turn him down. I was very surprised when I liked Lion King but for me Disney films aren't serious films any more.

I doubt I'd ever get around to watching it.

Skip it. Nothing here that hasn't been done to death before.

The Emperor's New Groove, on the other hand, is hilarious! It has its flaws, but it's still a fun time and is quite original in many ways. :)

Still, better than having two copies of T1.

I agree PARTLY with Monkey. The Emperor's New Groove is really worth seeing. It's a great little movie which focusses on humour instead of anything else. Very funny, especially Krunk.

But I adisagree about Tarzan. I felt it's a great movie. True, it's pretty straightforward, but so is The Lion King. Personally, I liked Tarzan better.
The only bad thing about Tarzan is that Phil Collins will get on your nerve. But it's all good anyway.

BTW Brad: Didnt you like Aladdin and Mulan? I'd say those are enjoyable to older guys (and girls) as well.
Hell... maybe it's just me, but I feel many animated movies are still very much enjoyable for me.

I happen to be a fan of Mr. Collins :), especially during his Genesis days. Why he's barely recording any more I don't know :(

Nope. They may have been Grim. I like Aladdin when I saw it during it's theatrical run (bootleg video though) but haven't seen Mulan.

The ONLY Disney (animated) film I've seen in the last 5 years is Lion King and that I was putting off for years and years. I was VERY surprised how good and epic it is but thought the ending was very weak. It's clear the writers had no idea how to finish the film. The first half was much stronger.

True. I was thinking I might get something for it on eBay. Not that I've had any luck so far.

Even £2.49 (THE lowest I'd go) is better than a film I may never watch. I've already got stacks of DVDs to see I've not seen.

I liked Aladdin, thought The Lion King was much better though. Aladdin is a kid's movie at heart. I havent seen Mulan.

I wouldnt specify Aladdin as a 'kids' movie, but as a good movie. It's fun & entertaining for everyone.
Shame on all you guys who still havent seen Mulan. It's pretty damn good, and all of us here have an 'asian fetish' ;) so there are no excuses for not having seen this!

Don't get me wrong Aladdin was a good movie IMO, entertaining but I preferred Lion King :)
Robin Williams is very funny in Aladdin though :D

I'm a big Disney fan - Beauty And The Beast is one of my top 5 favourite movies of all time - and I heartily reccomend Tarzan and The Emperor's New Groove - the latter was the last great film Disney did IMO

Thanks guys.

I ended up trading Terminator for About a Boy in my local Game Station so job done. It was buy one get one free too so I also picked up North by Northwest free :D . I checked and neither have any scratches on.

I also picked up JFK for £2.99 and got Welcome to the Jungle free (it was the only other £2.99 DVD and I was only really interested in JFK because it was cheap). Blast I've just checked and JFK 2 Disc SE (Direcor's Cut) is anamorphic. I knew JFK 1 Disc (Theatrical Cut) was non-anamorphic but thought they all were. Never mind it was cheap.

Good film that, especially so since it came from a reportedly mediocre Nick Hornby novel. Toni Collette is terrific and Hugh Grant isn't playing his typecast foppish nice guy loser for once.
North by Northwest
It might've been free, but still honestly dude.

Good point but I already own Vertigo and Psycho (the old version, I need to upgrade this) so don't have any interest in the box set and tbh even if I didn't own those I still wouldn't.

There are far to many Hitchcock films for me to buy them all. I just want selected ones. I only very rarely buy box sets because of their price, which of course when breaking it down they can be reasonable but that's not how I choose to look at it.

I've linked to the Warner set. Vertigo and Psycho are published by Universal and are in the Universal remastered set.

TBH I'm not that interested either way I'm not interested in buying a Hitchcock box set.

I'm after Birds R1 (UK R2 is cropped to 4:3) and a few others but that's it.

I have to defend Lilo & Stitch here. I think it's a really wonderful kids' film, even if it doesn't have as much to offer a wide audience of adults, like Aladdin does, for example. The writing is good and the character of Stitch is one that most kids really love because they can relate to him -- capable of being cute, but a destructive little monster underneath. I really like that Stitch is a flawed character, and not overly adorable, in the style of Bambi or Simba (as a cub).

*Yawn* Recent Disney is rubbish compared to Pixar. Brad Bird's works alone can grind everything made after the Lion King into dust.
