New Police Story.

Joy Sales:
2:02:41 NTSC.
2:35 anamorphic transfer.
DTS cantonese track.
English subtitles.

HK Vidéo:
1:58:15 PAL.
2:35 anamorphic transfer.
DTS cantonese track.
French subtitles.

Note: The Joy Sales disc has outtakes with dialogue scenes (unsubbed). The HK Vidéo disc only features outtakes with action scenes.

Same print. The Joy Sales disc suffers from some heavy compression problems (look at the wall on the right).

How come Charlie Young looks lovely on the french disc and ugly on the Joy Sales ? Ah yes, low bitrate.
Note that the contrast levels are slightly boosted on the french disc.

Different outtakes.

Overall I'd say the HK Vidéo is better, but not by much.
The difference will only be visible on High-end hardware (where the compression problems will become more obvious).

Note: There's a german DVD with a different print out there. It suffers from contrast boosting and lots of edge-enhancement, but it's an improvement over the Joy Sales disc:

I don't get why there is still a scroll bar when your captures are smaller than the rest?

Isn't the HK DVD from MegaStar? Not Joy Sales.

Either way it's a nice DVD with English subtitled extras I think. It will do until HKL eventually bring their's out.

Have you used lots of JPEG compression? This one looks really compressed, yuck!

The JPG compression I use is barely noticeable.
Most of the artefacts you see come from the DVD itself. I've double-checked.

Nope. Joy Sales. I'm looking at the cover right now. :)

The German disc is in my opinion the best one out there as far as picture quality is concerned. It is a lot sharper than the JoySales and the French disc.

It also features different outtakes than the HK version. They were given the same outtakes as were HKV. Interestingly, at the theatres, they had the dialogue outtakes, which were even dubbed. They removed them completely from the DVD and they don't even turn up on the bonus disc.

There are also exclusive special features on the German disc, bproduced by e-m-s. Unfortunately, there are no English subs.

Only because it's got lots of edge enhancement.
