Hey,
OK, this has no English subs, but damn... the China disc is out on April 30th. How fast is this Johnnie To-guy? Is he in competition with Takashi Miike or what?

Some filmmakers are very passionate and eager, so they move straight away onto a new project after the last one is finished. Eg Steven Sodenbergh:- Works on a studio film to fund one or several independent films.
On a related note, hypothetically would someone be desperate to see a film ASAP that they'd even consider buying a Mainland China release; which has a high probability of being utter arse? (Rhetorical) Personally I'd wait for the HK release, or even longer for a Western release. I'm no rush to see films unless I'm hyped up about them.

hey,
Presumeably, Panorama is still involved and will handle the dvd of Election 2 which means there's no reason to wait for any Western release. Think director's interview, cast interviews, making of, booklet... all with English translation.Personally I'd wait for the HK release, or even longer for a Western release. I'm no rush to see films unless I'm hyped up about them.

I dont even know if Election (1) was any good....
Wassit!?
BTW: I'm exactly the same, Eva. I dont have that rush to see movies either. There are still so many good/great movies I havent watched yet, so I just pick up the ones that have a good DVD release, and I usually wait for them to become bargains as well...
It's been a very long time ago since I bought a DVD full-price. Must have been in Hong Kong actually, I guess. Initial D for my girlfriend on the day of release. And I didnt have a problem with it cause it was a present. But pretty much all my buys are when they're cheap. I enjoy it much more that way.

I was there, the big BNB blackout of november, 2008. We lost many that day...

hey,
from moi and do disagree.
Sequel has been getting good reviews so far, on par with the first and am very much looking forward to how To chooses to explore. He's set up a nice foundation and way of thinking already.

http://www.sogoodreviews.com/reviews/election.htm...the biggest knock in an otherwise immersing work is that the film is very inconclusive in its development of secondary characters (again Louis Koo and Nick Cheung). There's got to be more to it and it came as no surprise to hear that Election 2 is already in the works. So Election is a work worthy of criticism, a work of patience, style, humour and a view of the triad world where hope for loyalty is lost, even for humanity as a whole. It's felt and it's another welcome, if not masterful addition to the filmography one of Hong Kong's very best.

Man, "Election" was a big hype to me. While I did not really dislike it I found that there was something not working or so. I mean I enjoyed it enough to be looking forward to the second part, but that might only be due to Simon Yam's performance. But then again, Simon is always acting the same personas. Cool and tough cop/gangster/killer.
What really pissed me off in this film though was Ka-fei's performance. He was doing nothing else than screaming around and going on my nerves. I really hope we do get to see what made him so retarded.

hey,
sequel I don't think will go into any backstories, LD.
And it is kind of a stock performance and not particularly award worthy but if you're gonna have someone play a type, get someone like Tony. Hence me not being annoyed at all.
Sequel will reportedly, and thankfully, put more focus on Louis Koo's character as that was a minute and wasted presence in the first film. But then again, it's hard to deny that To WASN'T going for a sequel regardless so to leave out some stories seems very much in intent.
