well not everyone will have the previous release and believe it or not some people like the tins!! just because it's of no interest to you mark doesn't mean it won't be to somebody else

It's just lazy to reissue the same discs with a tin is all.
And anyone who buys a film squarely for a tin deserves to be ripped off.

Magna Pacific releases tend to be very good from my experiences. I haven't seen their release of R4 Reservoir Dogs, but my friend has it. If you want a report on the PQ, I could view it if you want.

if t's better than the region 1 for a tenner i'd go for it

I watched it today. Good progressive-encoded native PAL transfer, you've got nothing to worry about.
Also it was the first time I had seen the film, was almost exactly the same as Pulp Fiction IMO. I could definitely see the parallels with City on Fire too.

I've got the R4 2-disc set, got it in a trade ages ago, because I heard it was overall the best version. I haven't seen an actual cap comparison though...

The R4 and R1 Picture Quality leaves a lot to be desired. I used to own the R4 and it's VERY dark.
The UK R2 is the way to go despite losing DTS and some minor extras. The Picture Quality is much nicer. I own the UK R2 SE now but like I said I used to own the R4 SE.
The UK R2 SE only has DD5.1 so no Stereo if that bothers you and it only on a DVD-5 (for the film disc) but considering the film length, 1 commentary and 1 DD5.1 mix this isn't a problem.
The overall best AV version is still the 1 Disc UK R2 as it doesn't cut any off the speech and has the best overall PQ but misses out on all the extras. Personally I'm more than happy with my UK R2 SE.
R1 SE vs. UK R2 SE:
http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=11442
Yuck look how dark it is. The R4 looks the same as these R1 caps.

WTF??? Sure it's similar in style but then it's by the same director but almost exactly the same no way.
IMO Reservoir Dogs is QT's best work. Like Taxi Driver it has that raw feel lost when a director gets more money to play with. Pulp Fiction is awesome too.

Nope it's as messy.

I meant in terms of style, the style felt almost exactly same to me as Pulp Fiction. With the pop culture lecture at the start in the diner, the non-conventional narrative, etc. I do agree that it's better than Pulp Fiction though.
The R4 looked good to my eyes, I'll probably end up getting that eventually.

From James 45 of The DVD Forums:
can confirm the R4 is excellent, the PQ is nothing at all like the R1 or R2 SEs.

Here's a link to a comparison of:
Momentum - Region 2 - PAL vs. Seven7 (3 DVD Collector Ed.) - Region 2 - PAL vs. Momentum (Special Edition) - Region 2 - PAL vs. Artisan (Special Edition) - Region 1 - NTSC vs. Universal (Edition Collector Limitée) - Region 2 - PAL

That's conclusive then???
Rubbish the R4 is to dark and looks very much like the R1 so I'm betting it's from the same master. FYI the complaint with the R1 is the darkness AFAIK it's otherwise decent. It's the UK R2 that looks different so to compare the R1 with the UK R2 as James is doing is all wrong.
Check out those screen captures. That said at the end of the day they're all decent enough.

FYI the R4 menus are identical to those posted for the R1. What more proof do you need to say Madman used Artisan's R1 master and many hate that.
Like I said for me I used to own both the UK R2 and R4 SE's and opted to keep the UK R2 SE for the better PQ.
That comparison makes ALL the DVDs look a mess which isn't the case, it makes the R1 SE look worse than it is.

The region 1 new transfer isnt dark at all, its so light it makes the picture unwatchable, so it cannot be the same. Its a total mess as all blacks are grey! makes the film crap. Them picture snaps look wrong to me as it was widley reported about the region 1 transfer being light.

Do you mean the R1 SE or yet another DVD? As it's wildly reported to be to dark. Check out the DVD Times comparison.
Not to light to dark and as the R4 is the same then yuck.
Still that Tin does look nice.
I like Tins if they're not expensive. I recently bought the I, Robot Tin from Amazon even though I already owned the exact same DVD which was inside the Tin. I traded my original (in New Mint condition) so it was no big deal.
There are loads of Exclusive Tins here:

A lovely but expensive Star Wars one:

A not so expensive Scarface tin:

I own it. I dont need a comparison.
Its wayyyyyyyy too light and many reviews when it came out say so, even read reports that the transfer was wrongly mastered a few notches too high so blacks look grey in some scenes.
Heres some caps that show, its a joke of a transfer. The pics are old and new Region 1 transfers, if you cannot see that the new version is almost grey, well I wont say anymore as its bloody obvious the new transfer is shit..

DVD Times I have no idea what dvd they have but ist not the 10th anniversary 2 dvd edition, most good reviews mention its too light, faded and badly washed out.

No, the distributor is Magna Pacific, who have become a very good DVD publisher in recent years (they used to be really bad, eg using P&S VHS masters). I can confirm that the R4 is native-PAL and progressive-encoded.
Another very good R4 publisher you should keep your eye Brad is Umbrella Entertainment.

What have they put out?
Romero unless I'm missing something how can you say the new (which I presume is the right one?) is to light? Clearly it's to dark and as you say grey meaning dark not light.
Which is why the UK R2 fixes this.

The definitive releases of:-
-Lee Tamahori's classic NZ film
Once Were Warriors (with a new transfer sourced from a Hi-def remaster supervised by the director).
-Phillip Noyce's critically-acclaimed return to Australian cinema,
Rabbit Proof Fence.
-Remastered SE of NZ director Roger Donaldson's superb film
Smash Palace - availiable only in a doublepack with his debut film Sleeping Dogs (also received SE treatment + remastering - both films were supervised by the director IIRC).
-Remastered SE of classic NZ road movie
Goodbye Pork Pie.
Umbrella are responsible for:-
-The best globally available release of Ridley Scott's
1492: Conquest of Paradise (the R2UK is shit and there is no R1 release).

If you cannot see the new transfer is far too light and blacks are grey they your eye sight is not very good. ITS TOO LIGHT, BLACKS ARE GREY.

see?
the 1st pic is the old transfer yes and the 2nd pics are new transfer, the contrast is so high its almost like someone has spread a layer of white over the image. Its not dark at all in any way, its too light.

At least the R1 SE appears to be correctly framed.
I have the R4, but no other version so there's not much point me doing screen caps is there?

unless you want to, I just know I wont watch the Region 1 2 dvd version again as I had to lower the brightness and contrast so much just to get blacks looking black, which you should not have to do. The Region 2 looks best from them images, but I would have to see for myself I guess
