The last couple of weeks have brought news about a song called "Crazy," by Gnarles Barkley, a collaboration between Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo. Billed as psychedelic soul, apparently this song became a number one hit in Britain through downloads on the internet, when the album isn't due for release until May? And already critics are calling it one of the most exciting debuts of 2006?
Okay, so I listened to the song online, and it's catchy, but is it all that? Hmmm. . . .
What's the buzz and the inside scoop from across the pond?
Who is Gnarls Barkley, and what's the fuss over Crazy?

In the UK at least it's causing lots of hype because it's the very first single in UK history to get to number 1 on purely Internet download sales.
Don't you guys have lots of charts? We just have one top 40 chart based on single sales. Oh and another album chart of course.
By law a physical version must also be sold but it doesn't have to be at the same time. The CD single was released a week later, it's still at number 1 now.
The thing is the actual number of downloads was really low compared to the heigh day where millions of copies could easily be sold. Single sales are declining, good they're a bloody rip off.
I think it's good but I've heard better yes but then it's not being talked about every 2 minutes like I guess it is in the States.
Shouldn't we be asking you? The dudes are American and it's an American song
I can't talk for anywhere else in Europe.

Okay, so here's a bit more, from hiphopreaction.com:

Gnarles Barkley make history in charts
Posted on April 5, 2006
Gnarls Barkley made music history this weekend when their debut single 'Crazy' topped the UK singles chart on download sales alone.
The single, taken from their upcoming album 'St. Elsewhere' set for release May 9th on Downtown/Atlantic is set to be one of the biggest hits of 2006.
Warner Bros UK, the group's UK label opted to make 'Crazy' available as a download three weeks ahead of its physical release due to phenomenal public demand following significant airplay. With consumers embracing a musical culture in which they can access digital files for portable media players immediately, this represents a progressive move that both satisfies consumer demand as wel as offering a legitimate alternative to illegal downloading. Consisting of former Goodie Mob member Cee-Lo and notorious Gorilliaz/'The Grey Album' producer Danger Mouse, Gnarls Barkley are undoubtedly 2006's hottest emerging artist.
The Los Angeles Times writes, "...Grammy-nominated producer Danger Mouse and soul dynamo Cee-Lo Green-are being eyeballed as one of the year's most intriguing new arrivals." They will make their US debut at Coachella on April 30th followed by a performance at this summer's Lollapalooza festival in August.

We haven't been in touch for a few months. I'll have to send her an email and see how things are. Thanks for the link, though.
