Need help picking films ? KOREAN FILMS

Post by Unrealnils »

I wanna order some korean films from yesasia.

EDIT

by the way i've seen these in yesasia's sale

I need some help guys are these films any good ?? and what about the disks/versions ??

The Horror Game Movie Nightmare

THE CLASSIC (China Version)

Dream Of A Warrior (China Version)

Friend (Overseas Version)

Face (Overseas Version)

Three...Extremes (DTS Version

The Uninvited (DTS Version) (Overseas Version

Windstruck (Overseas Version)

SO far i have Old boy, the only criteria i have is the film must not have been reviewed by Korean cinema house and id trather not have to sit through a melodrama not easy i know but any action, sci-fi, horror thriller or so on would be well appricated.

All films should be reviewed for this sire so let me know if theres anything new you'd like to know about.

Also whats the score with the freebie they throw in apart from failen are they any good ( i have that one)

Ps what the best version of OLD BOY !!
PSS and good us/jap/chinese films that have a better korean dvd release ?

There is only 1 version of OldBoy out so obviosuly get the korean one.Old Boy cheaper at cdwow.

Fighter in the Wind is fooking superb! get that!I was very entertained. Korean version cheaper at cdwow.

The Big Swindle was great fun, it suprised me and get me going :) cheaper at cdwow

Into The mirror is a classy Horror film and the korean dvd is nice :) not sure if its at cdwow mind you :)

in fact fuck Yesasia they have bugger all cheaper than CDWOW so dont bother with them at all. unless your fooking crazy that is, basically yesasia are shit now as all there prices are crap compared to all other sites, they are only good for Big things over 18 quid to get thru customs, apart from them dont bother unless you are severly silly.

:D

If CD WOW don't stock what you want go to KoreanDVDs.com.

Why can't it be reviewed at Korean Cinema House?

How about: Nowhere To Hide: Special Edition

I've not seen a Korean film for a while but that's one I'd get. I'd not bother with "Memories of Murder" personally but I know everyone else loves it, it's a pity it was ruined by lame humour but that's another thread.

I'm sure it was only included as to make a 2 disc release!

p.s - Grim as Romero says yes. It's the only version uncut and anamorphic (with DTS too) and is cheap so ignore the second disc.

I gotta say, get JSA, that's definitely a must.
Taegukgi was good, but nothing special, your typical war movie.Still, probably worth buying.
Sil mi Do was average at best and I found Nowere to Hide barely watchable.
Arahan was very entertaining
Can't say anything about horror movies, I don't watch that
And avoid Korean so-called comedies at any cost!!!

U got that right!;)
I'll tell you why. Let's take Taegukgi, for example.Imagine, some Hollywood studio desided to make a movie about the war between the two Koreas. (Don’t ask me why;) ). AND to make it with an all-Asian cast .Some American writer came up with a schmaltzy tear-jerker script, some American director filmed it, American editor edited it and so on. All accordingly typical American standards of moviemaking. What do we get? – Taegukgi!
That’s what Korea does today – they make American movies with Korean actors. (Good actors, I must add. That Chow Yan Fat look-alike actor did a great job in Taegukgi.)
Korean movies are complete opposite of why I like HK cinema. HK budgets are smaller , production values are not that high, BUT they are not afraid to try new, innovative things. Even if they use a plot from an American movie, they add some special,( oriental, if you want) touch to it and often make them better. Or, at least, original. They offer great action, original choreography, and unbelievable mix of genres. They dare. At least, they used to.
Korean movies more concerned about how they look. I admit, they look great. They use all kinds of techniques and gimmicks, but that’s all they have to offer.
I agree with the guy, who writes reviews on Nixflix.com. Read his reviews on Taegukgi, Sympathy for mr Vengeance, 2009:LM, or Natural City - I feel the same way

Romero I think the 2 disc SE is £9.99 now (or did you include vouchers?)
Do you mean I should get that but not watch the second disc?
The only other DVD available from them is a cut, non-anamorphic International Cut of NTH @ 4.99

I thought it was well made and decent but nothing special or original. I've seen it all before.

My Sassy Girl is great but I've not seen any others.

I think you should avoid Korean films tbh.

I kind of agree with you.

Korean films aren't half as original as most people think. Sure some are great but I've seen lots of them before.

IMO Korean film-makers realise the American film formula works and want to copy it. I get more excited about Japanese films tbh but don't get me wrong some Korean films are very good.

Yes or rather you can but it's cut. I'd watch the International vs. Director's cut featurette on disc 2 at least.

That is the old release which isn't anamorphic and doesn't have DTS, enough said really.

It's by the same director as "The Isle" and the Tartan DVD is the one to get, it has a subtitled commentary for starters.

I personally dont care if a film is origanal at all in any way, too many people get stuck on that point. Tacgagucki was a stunning film, and I dont care who it was aimed at as it did everything almost perfect.

Every single other country is exactly the same theres not one origanal country out there, HK is lame and quite pathectic if you ask me they never produce much of interest ever for me or many others, yes they make great films, but really the films I seem to see are pants latley! and they are trying to emulate Hollywood excatly and failing ever time, give them cash and the messup even more. They are the kings iof emulation copying one good idea and flogging it to within one inch of its life!

I see nothing wrong at all with trying to be big and spending cash on films, on the whole Korean films for me are as good as any country I see films from and the ratio of brilliant films to bad is almost none existant, as I cannot say I have seen any crap films yet! I cannot say that about the trash that comes from other countries, esspecially Hong Kong.

A film doesnt have to be origanal at all in any way to be a great film, it can be an almost exeact copy of another film and still be greater than the film its trying to copy.
There is no such thing as an Origanal film at all, as everything is a copy of something else.

Bad guy,
yes its a very nice film, hard to watch at times and not for everyone, but its definaly different and pretty nasty at times with violence and nasty stuff in it. Would recomend that film and the HK dvd is cheap and passes for the price, but I am sure other region dvds will be better, but I paid 2.99 for the HK dvd and it was worth every penny :)

There is a lot of original work coming out of France and Europe that barely gets mentioned on this forum.

I saw "Birth" on Saturday which was very original and restored my faith in American cinema. Bloody fantastic it was too and very David Lynch in it's style but as it has an A-List Hollywood actress in it I doubt it will be discussed much here.

How exactly is it origanal?

its all been seen before there no way to make an origanal film anymore, and people do talk about European films its just theres bugger all thats good and worth seeing, or they dont come out on dvd with UK subs, so pointless even talking about them at all.

and this is an asian forum on the whole, if people start other film threads we will interact, I dont see many europen film much as kost I do see are shit, overated pants.

We rarley get any great ones overhere BrotherHood of the wolf was the last great French film for me, seriously cannot see many others on the horizon!

As you've not seen it how can you possibly make that statement?

Have you seen them all? So how can you possibly make that statement?

Pedro Almodóvar's latest (Bad Education) released this year is fantastic. Besides I wasn't talking about European films I was talking about French and Spanish films.

Why do British films need English subs? My point being that Korea is far from the only country releasing great cinema it's just Korea has a cult following right now.

That came out ages ago, do you keep an eye on European cinema? If not how can you possibly now.

In fact you are very wrong we get our fair share of European films. To name two:

1. Layer cake
2. Goodbye Lenin

You say yourself it's shit so am I to presume you still keep an eye on European cinema? We get more mainland European films than say America does.
I am not watching Korean films only and they aint a cult, as they are better than all the other films I am wathing so they are the best thats the reason I am folowing them, and I never said they need subs to be great.
I watch loads of films from all over and I follow all countires movies and styles etc.. doesnt mean theres anything at all good coming from any of them.
As you've not seen it how can you possibly make that statement?

Thats why I was asking what origanal about them
 theres no way possable to make any film that has not been seen in one incarnation before.

A Very Long Engagement is far from anything new at all, and that mans cineama is bland anyway way overated and if thats the best French people have to get them going Iwould rather not ever bother, I would take evil films like Irreversable anyday over his bland work.

as I said the last Great french film was Brotherhood of the wolf, I have seen hundreds of films since then from all over the world no french or europen film comes close to it, in fact most europian cinema I have seen is shit all the best films just havent come out yet I guess, compared to Korean cinema for me other countires are inconsistent and on the whole crap :( and its not as if I stick with one country I buy so many from all over that I see more than most.:P wish I didnt as it costs too much to waste cash on films that aint very good.
