But his quiet life is unexpectedly shattered when a huge monster emerges from the Han and begins devouring people. The movie stars Song Kang-ho (The President's Barber, Antarctic Journal) as Kang-doo who is dragged into the affair when tragedy strikes his small family. His father is Byeon Hee-bong (Crying Fist, Memories Of Murder) and others in his family include Bae Doo-na (Take Care Of My Cat, Tube) as his sister, Park Hae-il (My Mother The Mermaid, Memories Of Murder) as his brother and Ko A-seong debuting as his daughter. Many other familiar faces will appear such as Park No-shik (Kwang-ho from Memories Of Murder) and even the director of Antarctic Journal, Im Pil-sung, will make his second film appearance (his first was in No Blood No Tears). Directing the star-studded cast is rising star Bong Joon-ho (Barking Dogs Never Bite, Memories Of Murder). This Chungeorahm thriller, which features special effects from San Francisco-based company The Orphanage, will be released in late spring/early summer 2006.

Typhoon
Image

Jang Dong-gun looks uber-cool in this film.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
South Korea's new big-budget movie Typhoon drew 1.8 million people during its first five days in theaters, topping the weekend box office and setting a local box-office record for this year, its distributor said Monday.

The action film released nationwide last Wednesday broke the August record of 1.4 million by Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, a prize-winning thriller directed by Park Chan-wook, CJ Entertainment said.

The blockbuster directed by Kwak Kyong-taek ("Friend", "Champion") has been the talk of the town because of its star actors, record budget and theme of inter-Korean confrontation. The plot centers on an attempt by a North Korean pirate, played by Jang Dong-gun, to make a nuclear attack on the Korean Peninsula, and efforts by a South Korean agent, played by Lee Jung-jae, to stop him. The agent comes to sympathize with the North Korean, who grew up penniless in China after witnessing as a child the massacre of his family after a failed attempt to seek asylum in the South.

Shot in South Korea, Thailand and Russia, Typhoon cost 15 billion won ($14.7 million) for production and 4 billion won for publicity.

"Typhoon" was released on the highest number of screens, 540, at 115 theaters nationwide.

DreamWorks is set to distribute Typhoon, the most expensive Korean film ever made, in North America in 2006. It will be the first Korean film released by a major U.S. studio.

If you're talking about Geochilmaru (the showdown), it's not exactly a new movie.
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Yeah, I thought about inserting that here. It is also known as "The Showdown". But as Tom said, it's not really a movie.

Will add movies whenever I remember or come across an interesting one.

Currently, I'm mostly looking looking forward to "Typhoon".

Why Typhoon guys?
The same director and lead actor from "Bichunmoo". This is also distributed by New Line Cinema.
The cover art + New Line are enough to make me want to see this. I love period action flicks.

Any good Hong Kong movies to look out for this year? SPL is the best HK movie I've seen in ages. I also recently watched Election, and I would have had more fun watch snails doing a marathon. It could have had something to do with me watching a Mandarin dub with no English subs though, although I can't always tell with Jonnie To movies.

Came across this yesterday, sounds like one to definitely look forward to!

Doomsday Book (working title) is a 3-part anthology due early 2007.

- Chapter I (SF/Drama): Directed by KIM Jee-woon (A Bittersweet Life)
- Chapter II (Horror): Directed by IM Pil-sung (Antarctic Journal)
- Chapter III (SF/Musical): Directed by HAN Jae-rim (Rules of Dating)

I think Antarctic Journal is one of the more underrated Korean films in the last couple of years, so I'm really looking forward to what Im Pil-sung will come up with. And an "SF/Musical"? Can't go wrong. :P

I liked "Antarctic Journal". But I wonder if it would have been the same without Song Kang-ho and the wonderful soundtrack by Kenji Kawai.

Gave it 4/5.

When I think back on it, I don't even really remember the music. Even though there were a lot of "top" actors in this film, the film itself isn't an actors' film to the degree that some are (particularly with novice directors so I'm impressed that it wasn't the case with this one). I like the overall vision of the film and the fact that it didn't sit firmly in a particular genre.

Unfortunately, it's these bold first-time director efforts that we'll probably no longer see once the Korean screen quota restrictions come into effect.
