I hear Black Mask is good, Black Mask 2 is supposed to be crap, so crap even Romero won't touch it
 :D

I'm interested in the Swordsman and Black Mask sets, and the standalone movie (On The Mountain of Tai Hang) looks good also.

I saw it recently. Well shot but not very good.
Too much propaganda for my taste. :|

Tom re: Chinese Taeguki,
Merci ;) Is there a DVD available? The trailer makes it look decent IMO :)

Brad,
Do you think the Swordsman/Black Mask boxsets are worth getting? What about Running Out of Time? :)

Black Mask no as I hear Black Mask 2 is awful. The rest I don't know as I've not seen them but they have their fans.

Swordsman 2 (1991)
Inferior to the first Swordsman movie despite the presence of Jet Li and Brigitte Lin but still a good WuXia.

East Is Red (1992)
AKA Swordsman 3. The best of all three movies IMO. You can't go wrong with Brigitte Lin and Joey Wong.

On The Mountain Of Tai Hang (2005)
Well-shot war movie full of propaganda.

Black Mask (1996)
Low-budget dark superhero movie that would have been extremely crappy if there hadn't been Jet Li and Karen Mok in it.

Black Mask 2 (2002)
Haven't seen it yet, but some people have been comparing it to Legend of Zu, so I'm sure it's good. :D

:D Agree about Joey Wong and Brigitte Lin :)
Is Black Mask available by itself?

I've seen all of those your mention, Grim, except the new Mainland movie, and I would recommend BLACK MASK and SWORDSMAN II.

EAST IS RED is generally regarded as the weakest of the trilogy, BLACK MASK 2 is hated, but it's mediocre rather than abysmal, and I didn't care at all for the over-rated RUNNING OUT OF TIME. I actually preferred the much-maligned sequel, but wouldn't buy it.

Black Mask isn't available in uncut form, though, is it? Well, on a decent DVD anyway.

The HK DVD is uncut, no? :? Isnt the Taiwanese version for a different market? Thats in Mandarin anyway.

The HK DVD is cut as per the theatrical version.

The Taiwanese DVD is uncut, but Mandarin dubbed only.

The thing is guys to get it truly uncut you have to put up with the woefully unwatchable Taiwanese DVD.

Which has AWFUL AV and even poorer burnt in subs. Don't bother and get the Remastered HK DVD.

Yep and it has been for some time.

Bugger it used to be £5.99 at CD WOW but they no longer stock it. I hate when that happens  . Try e-mailing them, if not pay a bit more and get it from DDDHouse.

CD WOW do have Swordman 2 though:

I'd rather wait for a decent uncut DVD than buy one that is cut.

The German DVD of "Black Mask" is uncut as well. But it doesn't feature English subs. These DVD companies are so dumb. Don't they know they are releasing an exclusive DVD? Why not put English subs on it (which costs like nothing) and by doing so increase the sales.

As for "On the Mountain of Tai Hang"... I saw the trailer back in August or so and as soon as it was up for pre-order at YesAsia, I ordered it. Should be here by the end of this year.

What's the quality like?

It's definitely the same cut as the Taiwanese DVD?
gasteropod wrote:I'd rather wait for a decent uncut DVD than buy one that is cut.
I can't see it ever coming though. The uncut version was only released in Taiwan (like The Killer and Hard Boiled extended cuts) and going by past experiance I can't see this changing anytime soon.

A French company may release the Taiwnese cut but it will be like The Killer and be tosh quality.

Remember the HK DVD isn't really cut it's just the Taiwanese cut is an extended cut, that's a better way of looking at it.

The HK cut is the official cut. It may even be the DC??? That said strangely the English dub only R1 which is also cut features some of the footage from the Taiwanese cut.

Does anyone know if this new "Jackie Chan's Kung Fu Classic Collection" with "Drunken Master" and "Snake in the Eagles Shadow" is any good?

I've been waiting so long for a dvd of Drunken Master with a decent 2:35:1 OAR and a non-fucked-up audio track.

Exactly. what's worse is when you get DVD companies like "Face" in China putting English subtitles on the director's cut of Hero but then ruining the film by having a logo pop up every 10 minutes or so which cannot be removed unless you watch the film without English subtitles. :x they would have made an absolute fortune if they hadn't done that especially since large parts of the English-speaking world hadn't even received hero at the cinema at the time of release let alone the directors cut.
