Darren Aronofsky

Post by BiscLimpkit »

What does everyone think of Darren Aronofsky? I just watched Requiem for a Dream, which was a lot better than I expected. In fact, it's a brilliant film.

I watched Pi before but that felt quite underwhelming. I'm not sure why, felt slightly inconclusive.

Requiem on the other hand is so nicely conducted - the music, all those flashy cuts etc. I was mentally prepared to feel terrible, but found everything quite amusing actually. Especially the state of Harry's mum towards the end.

He has a superb audio-visual style, even in Pi. So I look forward to his future titles.

i cant believe youve only just watched it bisc, i mustve been going on about it for years, my favorite movie of all time.

you know he was originally writing the script for batman begins but got replaced by the studio early on because of the direction he was taking it. legend has it his version of the film opened on batman sitting on the loo, tights round his ankles crying with a gun in his mouth... i can only dream of what might have been :P

Can't believe people actually think requiem for a dream is good. I think it's an absolute detestable piece of shit. One of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Why!?

Ok... I'll tell you why...

first of all, it's way over the top. It's a movie about drugs, OK, and it's a movie about the bad things that can happen because of drugs ... ok... still with ya... but it's just wayyyyyy over the top, man. It's like the biggest piece of anti-drugs propaganda EVER! It's totally unrealistic. ALL those involved happen to completely fuck up their lives? Fuck that! I'm not pro drugs or anything (hell I don't even smoke or drink, so I certainly would never touch any drugs...) but the way this movie portrays it is just wayyyy overboard. It's completely unbalanced, and it totally goes for the shock-value to to drill the redundant message home that drugs are bad for ya... (big duh).
It's a 1 dimensional propaganda piece of shitty film-making.

Some of the acting, especially the part of the mother, was terrible.
And the crazy cuts and edits which was probably intended to make it look cool and hip or whatever, was both unnecesarry and just annoying.

I'm very very surprised I could even finish watching the movie...
Perhaps I wasn't overwhelmed by this movie because the shock-endings/results did absolutely NOTHING to me.
Chick goes bum-to-bum with another loser chick? So-fucking-what. didnt give a shit about her character anyway. Guy loses his arms? So-fucking-what!? Guy was a loser anyway.
Absolutely NONE of the characters had any appeal to me anyway, and the script was so clearly over the top and unrealistic, that it just annoyed me no-end.

People say this is a realistic portrayel of drug-use: It's not. Wake up. On an individual scale, yeah these events can happen... but the way it all happened in this movie, with everyone involved ending up the worst way possible, it's bullshit and over the top.

Goebbels himself couldnt have written anything more propagandic then this.

I have absolutely nothing against movies with a message, but at least try to stay a LITTLE bit objective when making such a movie, instead of treating the audience like complete imbeciles (those who liked the movie, yeah, that was partly an insult to you ;) )

lol, wow, you REALLY didnt like it then :D

As for an anti drug propaganda film?? clearly he failed on geting his message accross for you but the point of the movie was to tell a tragedy on people chasing their dreams so hard that when they realise things arre going wrong they are already too trapped in the process. drugs were a tool, not the purpose of the film. I am moderately pro drugs and i didnt detect any attempt at sedning a message either way.

i also found the cinematography and music wonderful, all scenes were very eye catching, all pretty gruesomly cringeful yet not possible to turn away.

still, each to their own I guess ;)

I DID see it as an anti-drug movie. it's pretty hard to see it in any other way. yeah the people in it have dreams and all, but it's pretty obvious it's all about the drugs and addicition.
But yeah, that's how I watched it, and if someone gets a completely different thing from it, he/she might enjoy it better then I did...

Did you care about any of the characters?

i cared about the mother, the others had a rather dumb dream in the first place, yu could pretty much guess it would go wrong, but with the mother her dream was very simple and achievable but she was totally screwed over by a combination of not caring and general incompatency by those around her who were supposed to care.

Minor spoilers

Requiem for a Dream is not an anti-drugs film (in my opinion). Obviously it explicitly reveals the consequences but the whole movie, as Mordib pointed out, is about what lengths people will go to in order to chase their dreams.

Each character has their own personal objective - a goal that they want more than anything. In order to achieve this, they become involved with drugs. Even as they begin their descent into darkness, they hold onto the drugs as they think that it is the only way that their dreams can be achieved.

The film never says "drugs are bad" - everybody knows this already. It paints a bleak picture of sheer determination.

The characters are not bad people, just naive and stupid. The mother is a tragic character, as all she wants is to be cared for. It is a simple request, which her own son fails to provide. However, the nature of her torture was made so vivid that I could not help but find her state quite amusing. But my heart goes out to her, honest.

After reflecting on this movie, I can say that I absolutely love it. I think Mordib owes me a hiding for not seeing it sooner.

Now if someone could persuade me why Pi is bloody excellent.... I want to enjoy this movie, imo.
