Stephen Chow, the king of Hong Kong entertainment, got some seriously bad treatment from journalists in Beijing last week. Source: Taipei times
One hour late for a promotional event in the Chinese capital, Chow found himself surrounded by angry reporters asking questions like, Why are you late? Don't you know how to pose? and You look really dumb like this.
When asked why he wasn't nominated for best actor at the Golden Horse the star finally lost it. Duh! I didn't get nominated because I'm a terrible actor, Chow was quoted as saying in a local daily.
Stephen Chow has learned a valuable lesson: Journalists are not always nice.

Actually I get the impression that Chow isn't the most pleasent of people to begin with. Can be quite moody. You see hints of it in his KFH interview with Ric Meyers.
I always get the feeling he's both a bit 'shy', but also a perfectionist... so I guess that can result in someone that seems un-interested yet irritable... of that makes sense.
Plus he usually speaks his mind, which is kinda unheard of in chinese society, so that could be perceived as rude...
Ah well, he makes cool movies and that's what it's all about...

He can be funny, but is surely an acquired taste much of the time? And he's no great shakes as an actor. I have a fair few of his films on DVD, mostly older ones, but genius? Hardly. Jackie Chan is a genius. Chow is good entertainment -- and considerably overrated by those who like to think they saw him first.

Actually, I'd rate Stephen Chow over Jackie Chan. Stephen Chow is still improving himself , and growing as both an actor and a director, while Jackie (sadly) has his best work behind him, and doesnt really seem to know how to make a great movie anymore.

But as Mark said, Stephen Chow is an acquired taste (though he is funny) and depends on whether you "get" Cantonese humor or not. I agree with Mark, calling Jackie a genius is apt IMO, he's touched more people over the world than Chow has 8)
My point was Chow NEVER was a comedy genius. He's a guy who sometimes makes funny films. Look at how uneven Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle are compared to Jackie's greatest works. Jackie maybe past his best but look at his back catalogue as a whole and, yes, he's a cinematic genius.
I always find it difficult to compare actors like Jackie Chan and Stephen Chow. Stephen has the physiques, but went for comedy. Jackie does a mixture of both. Jackie is a genius in the way that he knew how to make comedy that appeals to Asian and international audiences.
Stephen got behind the secret since maybe 'Shaolin Soccer'. This and 'Kung Fu Hustle' have been received ver well internationally. The comedies he made before that were also successful, however primarily in HK. To be honest, I doubt I understand Cantonese humour very well, but even his older film make me laugh. Not all of them (e.g. Fist of Fury 1991), but most of them and I can understand why a lot of people here don't like them.
Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle are both works of genius IMO. There aren't many films out there that can fuse special effects/CGI (take note Jackie), action and comedy as well as Chow has done in those 2 films.

Maybe, but Jackie isn't even teh best in his fields: Yuen Biao was the better performer, and both sammo and yuen biao are arguably better (martial arts-directors/choreographers)
Stephen Chow is absolutly unique in what he does, but he seems to be great at every kind of humor, from slapstick to sarcasme, to mo lay tau ...

Hmm... I found both Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle to be fairly good, but vastly overrated. I actually prefer Forbidden City Cop and God of Gamblers III, both of which are much funnier. As someone who detests most CGI Chow obviously isn't aiming his films at me.

i agree-both movies are brilliant and have endless rewatch value-
Not saying I disagree, just wondering
