Re: Natural Born Killers. To be fair I haven't seen the Directors Cut of this, which is probably better due to the (unfortunate?) release history of the film.

The Director's Cut is definitely better but if you don't like the theatrical cut, you're unlikely to like the director's cut. It's no Kingdom of Heaven difference.

Glad it's not just me who didn't care much for it. But it's a classic compared to NBK. The dir's cut is just more violent that's all.

Nope. Correct, it is more violent but it has other footage cut from the theatrical cut too. None of which will make you like it more if you dislike the theatrical cut though.

Just watched this. Don't ask why, call it a morbid curiosity. I should've learned, as I turned off Signs after 5 mins.

Southland Tales (USA, 2006) – 2,5/5
Very original and a little insane film by Richard Kelly. Quality wise it goes up and down. At times it feels like a bad Jean Pierre Jeunet / Marc Caro film, at others a futuristic Fight Club. There’s some stunning sequences like the ending, and a very good soundtrack, but some of the supporting characters (such as the scientists, and Bai Ling) prove that Kelly couldn’t always separate inventiveness from poor taste. There’s style in composing contrasts, but the satire tends to be a bit dull. Casting is similar to the film; unusual and misfires every now and then; Dwayne Johnson is okay, Seann William Scott quite good, and Sarah Michelle Gellar as irritating as usual. Justin Timberlake can’t act, but offers a good narration. Christopher Lambert sells guns and drives an ice cream truck. And so on.

So you liked Southland Tales right? I cannot tell if you liked or disliked it from that review.

I just watched this again friday, and I still think it's a great movie. Liked Signs and 6th Sense as well.

The only problem I had with Unbreakable was that the ending was a bit abrubt. I came around to quickly, no big climax, etc. Almost like they rushed it out the door.

But definately a 4 outta 5 from me.

Unbreakable is a very good movie, I agree with Yi about the ending though in the sense Sam Jackson doesnt seem to "mind" his character is evil, as he's just found Mr. Unbreakable/Bruce Willis, as if that was his "purpose". What did all those poor people do to him?!

The Last Cannibal World (Italy, 1977) – 3/5
Ruggero Deodato’s first cannibal film is a high tension jungle adventure that suffers from a weaker middle third. Especially the animal killings are unnecessary. The rest of the film, however, is well made. The beginning is very effective when you don’t know exactly what’s awaiting for the characters. The scenes featuring cannibalism are few and far between, but they do attempt to turn your stomach upside down. Based on true events, according to the filmmakers.

Nil by Mouth - 5/5

Loved it. Disturbing to watch but excellent performances all round, and perfectly cast too. For a Directorial first, Gary Oldman displays a natural gift. Not recommended for those who only enjoy pop-corn movies

The problem with UNBREAKABLE is that it makes no sense.

It's like Lex Luthor tracking down Superman and picking a fight.

What's the motive? I'm crippled therefore I'm an evil cunt?

Think about it and the whole story crumbles.

And was a weak film. Average production quality, but a silly story with weak characters. Would Bruce have never realized he'd never had a day sick in his life (rhetorical question)? I'd constantly brag about that one.

I think Sam's motive behind it all, was that he had this theory all his life: for someone as fragile and as weak as him to exist, there should also be someone who is his complete oppositie, so very healthy, strong, 'unbreakable', etc.
He wanted to PROOF that theory, by finding that direct oppositie.

Except, like many mad scientists and researchers, in his search for the 'truth', he forgot about human ethics. And in the end, when all the pieces fell into place, he finally realises that he IS the 'bad guy'. He realises that his comicbook-theory is true, but also that Bruce is the good guy, the hero... but that he himself is the complete opposite.

I still think it's a good movie, except for the ending, which was too sudden and over too quickly.

I completely agree, it's outstanding. Ray Winstone and Kathy Burke are fantastic.

Since when do comic books and fantasy make sense? None of Shyamalan's work makes much sense but that's not really the point.

IMO:

The Sixth Sense (1999) - Very good.
Unbreakable (2000) - Excellent, Shyamalan's best work.
Signs (2002) - Okay, overly stupid.
The Village (2004) - Very good, unfairly lambasted.
Lady in the Water (2006) - Utter tosh, it starts off well but quickly falls to bits.
The Happening (2008) - I've not seen this yet but will do. Shyamalan has only made one shoddy film IMO.

I thought the ending was fine, that said I cannot really remember it. I don't remember having an issue with it though.

Not just Bruce realizes it, but it's mostly Sam who finally sees himself as 'the bad guy'. He has been so pre-occupied with proving his own theory, that he didnt notice that he was sacrificing lifes in the proces, and at the end, he sees that HE is 'the crazy bad guy'.

@ Brad: like I said, the problem I had with the ending was that it seemed to come too quickly, and it just didnt relaly have a climax. We finally see what's the deal, Bruce walks away, then we just get some words about what happened next. Pretty low key, and you just feel kinda left in the cold.

Werent there supposed to be sequels, which never happened?

Incidentally, Unbreakable was just listed in Empire Magazines reader poll of 'The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time'! It made 452

FYI. 453 was Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and 451 was Speed

Guys, you're never gonna learn anything about movies if you keep reading Empire and Total Film

The Happening is almost but not quite as bad as Lady In The Water. 6th Sense was decent,Unbreakable great, Signs so-so and The Village not much cop.
