Well, Fortune Star doesn't have the rights to Hard-Boiled, but they do have the rights to the ABT trilogy. DD haven't released those yet. But if the source print is different... there's a slim chance of improvement.

I would be seriously surprised if DD leave the ABT cock up intact.

Depends on what source material they use?

But if they do use the Fortune Star print then I'm sure the skipping glitch will not be an issue.

The excessive grain, however, likely will be.

I just hope DD doesn't release the shitty version of ABT with crap music. Didn't Optimum do that?

Ya. Optimum's uses the same print as Anchor Bay's old R1 release and it has the Forrest Gump music too.

Seeing they've a Fortune Star contract, it'll be their version :).

Sure, there's framecuts, but it's the best source out there.

There's no good existing version of ABT so for once DD have an open goal.

Expect them to still miss. :D

I can live with ABT1's frame skip on the FS masters, they aren't all that bad.

e-m-s is also currently working on a ABT trilogy release. Hope it will be as good as their "Hard Boiled", "The Killer", "Full Contact" and "Prison on Fire"-series.

hey, that's good news. Their Swordsman and Chinese Ghost Story releases were also very good.

I just found out that DD will NOT be using a Fortune Star HD master for their release of The Killer. I'm pretty glad about that since FS's version doesn't look all that great.

Eh?!

Post by chenlung »

You sure?

Unless they've lost their Fortune Star contract, I cannot imagine it would be legally possible to do such a thing. Seems wrong :? .

I'm sure. A friend just emailed me a few minutes ago.

Also, according to this blog, DD's also putting out Jet Li's "Bodyguard From Beijing"!

Is there a comparison of this with the HK FS DVD?

Why? HKL did it all the time.

Fantastic.

I've always liked that one but so far it's recieved so bad treatment. Either a dodgy dubbed DVD or an atrocious VCD like DVD (which I used to own).

can you give me an example?

'A Better Tomorrow 2' = The Media Asia print was probably already licensed/restored before FS came about and HKL felt no need to spend anymore money, or they were satisfied with their own restoration (even though FS's master looks better).

I very much doubt the Fortune Star distribution rights come with the enforcement that they have to use their remastered prints, it's just easier for DD to buy them as well is all.

Maybe they didn't license it from FS. They may have chosen to use something aquired during their Miramax days.

This seems more likely - from Media Asia.

Okay if I must :D -

City on Fire

A FS print already existed but HKL didn't use it.

I could well believe DD have access to more than one master for some of their films.

HKL had City On Fire during their Media Asia days. FS print would have been available at the time they released it, but they probably wanted to save money (or not see it go to waste), and/or they thought their restoration was satisfactory.

Muldoon (of the ADVDG) reckons that the Golden Princess catalogue will not see Fortune Star masters internationally because they're not part of the Fortune Star deal. That goes for HKL, DD and any other company outside of Hong Kong. The only place you'll see Fortune Star masters for Golden Princess films is in HK.

no Fortune Star transfer = no Fortune Star audio = safe buy
Fortune Star transfer = Fortune Star audio = no buy in most cases (depending on company to some extent, DD has been pretty good with FS so far from what I've heard)

I wish no one would license their releases from Fortune Star (I know they probably have to nowadays, but...)

Possibly Media Asia or Atlas International.

FS' Killer DVD was pretty terrible all around. Poor transfer, poor 5.1 remixes, OOS mono. The Joy Sales re-release reportedly fixes the audio problem but I'm not buying it again.
