Sympathy for Lady Vengeance: 4/5
I enjoyed this, it seemed even weirder than Oldboy, but I had a hard time following what was going on. I did miss the first 10 minutes, though.
I hope Tartan releases the Director's Cut on Blu-ray.

The effects were absolutely disgusting, so well done there. It was all right, but I don't really need to see it again.

Dexter Season 2 - 7/10
This follows on from the first series directly and wraps things up - for now, albeit rather feebly. Still, I was hooked.
The Unit Season's 1-3 - 7/10
I can review these all together as though there are some feeable attempts at a central plot it's consistently the same throughout. It's a combination of some silly homefront drama and President David Palmer *bumps up the marks) of 24 and some other men being special forces badasses. It's not really very good but it arouses that part of my male brain that's a little bit Tom Clancy and thus it's a good watch.
Psycho - 8/10
Yes, I have only just seen this. Sorry! Having seen so many films that it has inspired it feels rather familiar and not as tense as it really should be, some of the gravitas is lost. Got to say though, the shock sequences are VERY effective and don't seem dated at all. Glad I have finally seen it.

That rating is for Alison Lohman's character, the film gets a 4.
Tipping the Velvet - 8/10

Halle Berry didn't really deserve an Oscar but the film, as a Hollywood production it is excellent and the ending is just superb.

I too thought Monster's Ball was excellent. Personally I think she deserved it.
@ Gasteropod: I would expect the Theatrical Cut (aka - Colour Version) first on BD seeing as that's the version most know. The Director's Cut (aka - Fade to Black Version) is something considered more special and will probably follow in an SE. All just IMO of course.

Plenty of Blu-rays are the unrated and director's cut versions though. Bad Santa even gives you the choice, as does Blade Runner of course, and Hellboy is the Director's Cut in the UK without even being advertised as so!bradavon wrote:I too thought Monster's Ball was excellent. I have the Korean 2 Disc LE which contains both cuts but haven't seen it yet. It's the only DVD to feature both cuts together.

STRANGE DAYS 4/5
One of best films of the 90s. A visceral experience in cinema if there ever was one from America's only female action director. Intelligent, stylish and adult. Ralph Fiennes (with Yankee accent) and the underused Angela Bassett are excellent. I bet this would look awesome on BD.

The precursor to Ashes to Ashes - John Simm's acting is excellent. The 70's seems to be captured so well. And of course, Gene (Phil Glenister) often steals the best lines

The Bourne Identity (HD DVD) - 4/5
I love this film. I watched my HD DVD for the first time and was very impressed. I thought the soundtrack was a bit lacking when compared to my old DVD, so after I watched the film I had a fiddle with my HTPC & cables... Turns out, the cable that sent the centre & sub channels to my amp was faulty!
The centre channel was quiet & the bass was none-existant. I replaced the cable and boom, deep bass & clear speach!
I'm guessing I will watch The Bourne Supremacy next...

It is a good price but if it can be beaten it should be looked into

They were faulty, not cheap. They'd have been a whole lot more expensive (like, 3 times more) if I hadn't got them at trade price too.
I replaced them with some cheaper cables that had been lying around in a drawer for ages. Until I get replacement cables from work for the dud ones, these cheaper ones will do for now...

The Incredible Kung Fu Master - 3.5/5
1979 kung fu film starring Stephen Tung Wei. Wonderful appearances by Sammo Hung (funny as hell kung fu teacher as usual), Philip Ko Fei, Lee Hoi San, Meng Hoi and Chung Fat.
Action = 4.25/5, I expected a mess, as there were supposed to be four action directors invloved with the choreography of the fight scenes. Even though they are all great in their department (Sammo Hung, Lam Ching-ying, Leung Kar-yan and Yuen Biao), I thought it was going to be a case of "Too many cooks spoil the action". It was not and I was very amused.
Overall = 3.5/5 as the story somehow lacks the heart of the other kung fu classics, such as "The Magnificent Butcher" or "Drunken Master".
