I found the celebrations of Thatcher's death tasteless and repugnant. There's a world of difference between disagreeing (even vehemently) with someone's politics and rejoicing publicly at their passing. Thatcher wasn't a dictator or a genocidal monster, but received the kind of vitriol usually reserved for same. The reaction of sections of the extreme left has been shocking (if not surprising). Shame on them (and Grim I expected better of you).

I wouldnt say I'd miss her though (but I dont see how posting a joke equates to rejoicing that she's dead). She wasnt a tyrant/dictator but I can see why many didnt like her.
Condolences to her family, but I won't weep for her TBH.

Thatcher made mistakes, granted, but she saved Britain from being an unproductive shithole. She did what she thought was best for the country as a whole and not just one outmoded sector of it. When you look at the list of misfits who hate Thatcher (George Galloway, Derek Hatton, Ken Livingstone, Arthur Scargill, et al) she must've been doing something right. Who would you have had in charge of the Falklands conflict? Michael Foot? Thatcher dragged the UK out of an economic death rattle, broke the stranglehold of the unions, and paved the way for American-Soviet relations, but you would think that none of that counted to listen to the hard left. I was watching CNN and it's sad that Thatcher receives more respect globally than she does at home. Thatcher wasn't cruel, she just wasn't weak, and in Britain strength is perceived as cruelty, hence why all subsequent PMs have been utterly spineless. She wasn't a dictator, but she had to fight hard to get shit done with a queue of jealous nobodies lining up to stab her in the back. If you want to talk about her mistakes, that's fine. I'm happy to acknowledge them. Name me a leader who hasn't fucked-up. I still think that you can disagree with someone's politics without resorting to vile hatred.

There was nothing wrong with the joke Grim, and perhaps Mark wasn't directly referring to the joke either (though I know he doesn't see humor in death). Celebrating someone's death and telling an innocent joke are two very different things.

I agree. I didnt mean to cause offence but its just a joke.
I wouldnt celebrate her death, but I won't miss her either.
But I've read that even her fiercest critics at the time think having "parties" for her death is a waste of time if not poor taste - some hated her, some didn't. Alexei Sayle (sp?) said "I won't be taking to the streets to 'celebrate' her death, I don't care enough to do that"
