The Big Boss isn't technically great, but it has an amazing raw power that few films can match.

I echo the same opinion of that film. Intense chase thriller as you said, the cinematography was also marvellous. I can overlook the the simplistic characters, dialogue and plot (eg that prominent cartoony "HA HA HA" henchman) - they got the job done; the technical merits more than make up for it.

TBB actually reminded a lot of Mad Max and Straw Dogs. The 3rd act of those films (where things just kept escalating, whilst the main protagonist maintains his civilised rationale. Until one dramatic event finally tips him over the edge and he loses it.), was just one of good point of a terrific whole.

This is not the case with TBB, because Lo Wei is a such bad director. The 3rd act is the only good part.

Lo Wei made some good movies for Shaw Bros, but got increasingly lazy when he moved to Golden Harvest. Fist of Fury is probably the exception to the rule. But I still have a lot of love for The Big Boss, as flawed as it is.

Watched this for the first time in ages last night and was just as good as before, even though I knew what the twist was. Loved the film, breatly acted, and very emotional. The girlf was in tears in the scene where Cole is telling his mum about his secret... Great stuff.

Resident Evil (hd-dvd) 2.5/5

Watchable but fairly average zombie movie has plenty of action but some wooden performances in the acting stakes.fairly light on gore which is unusual for a zombie movie.disappointing transfer to hd, the picture looks soft in places.

The Shining (blu-ray) 4.5/5

Still a great movie after all these years and the new transfer is a revelation.The small cast are excellent and i don't think a role has suited Nicholson's manic energy more apart from Cuckoo's Nest. some great imagery here.

Suprised you bought the HD version

Still I was all ready to get that German HD DVD, but price and quality sounded a bit off to me so waiting to see what the Japanese version in a few weeks is like if thats pants then blu Ray is the best hope for me (when I get Blu).

I did get Resident Evil 2 Extended Cut German HD DVD, hell its the only way to get that extended cut on HD so doesnt bother me as long as its better than the standard dvds I had of it (cost me nothing as well, sold my standard dvd for nearly £40, bought the HD DVD for £20, bobs my uncle).

Now to stat finding the 3rd film as well if only I had went Blu Ray it would be a lot more easy and cheaper for some films.

Agreed the film is excellent. It's also one of the true scary films. Nicholson is great. I've always thought One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest was overrated.

I'll be buying this and 2001 for sure.

Salty also has a 17 year old son who is a Resident Evil maniac so i got him the first two RE hd-dvds as he has a 360 drive. i like zombie movies but RE is no Dawn that's for sure.as for the Bourne movies i did post the other week i thought them much better on 2nd viewing yet to see the 3rd will wait for the HD-DVD .

I picked up the mental anime 'Dead Leaves' for £6.30 in HMV yesterday, it was aaace . I loved the bit where a hand came out the woman's fanny and shot someone with an uzi hahaha

That's because Bruce did a "Spielberg Poltergeist" on it.

Bruce directed his fight scenes for sure, but as to anything else, I've no idea?? I just know he thought Lo Wei was a lazy cunt. If you look at Bruce's direction in Way of the Dragon, that's worse than anything in The Big Boss (except THAT knife shot).

Jason Manford was pretty funny and Russel Howard was very funny (though he repeated some jokes heard on Mock The Week).
