The Two Ronnies S1: Eps 5-8: 3/5

Patchy, especially considering the writers involved but some fun to be had. Some skits are really too long, like Hampton Wick, a lengthy parody on costume drama.
Fast forward the novelty acts/pop songs (Chaz Chase, New World, Tina Charles etc) as well. That said, I enjoyed some of Barker's wordplay and the song and dance finales (though one is a questionable "tribute" to the Black and White Minstrel Show

)

Teenage Hooker Became a Killing Machine 0.5/5

What a weird, utterly crap film. Rips of Nikita in a place or two and combines it with Robocop, in one of the worst acted films I've ever seen. Everything about this film is absolutely awful. Even with a running time of 60 mins, it still drags in quite a few scenes - some of which actually seem like they are padding for teh film. The film is bizarre, made with a budget of about £50, or so it seems. The visual style is quite off putting, but somehow the director still managed to get the female lead to get her tits out... That's where the 0.5 comes in. Some of the score I guess could also be attributed to the rather humourous "Vagina gun" at the end...

Why Third Window Films would choose to pick this one up and release it in the UK is beyond me.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society - 4/5

Unsurprisingly the plot is intelligent, thoroughly intriguing and explores modern social concerns. Whilst I agree with Lourdes that plot-points do seem to come out of nowhere, it does all come together and make sense as whole. SSS has that intrigue from the first season that I felt was missing 2nd Gig. I really liked the ambiguity of the ending, leaving the viewer yearning to see how the consequences of the film affect the third season of the series.

As to be expected of GitS:SAC, SSS's technical aspects are outstanding. Great set-pieces that are perfectly directed to another marvellous score by composer Yoko Kanno.

Well, I was sent it free as a check disk by Third Window films, so figured I should watch it and will need to review it for my site... Whether I'll still get sent more check disk films is another matter after I've reviewed this one!!!

It's not really the sort of film to get more. It's not as if they could give the odd to any particular actress or actor.

You do indeed like odd films. This one tanked everywhere (to the level of "Lady in the Water"). I love Coppola's two previous films but just couldn't bring myself to see this.

You gave ut 4.5 out of 5 and was surprised it won Oscars? Didn't you think the direction was outstanding?

I thought United 93 was brilliant. I felt so uncomfortable by the end, there were people literally crying behind me, at the cinema. It's not a film (like The Passion) I have any inclination to ever watch again though.

Yeah because Oscars usually suggest a film is sentimential crap, or average sentimential stuff at best. This was far better than you'd expect from an Oscar nominated film.

Virgin Suicides I thought was decent but pretty forgettable.

Lost in Translation I found to be loads of fun. Some of the politically correct thugs on this forum probably didn't like though, they'd probably argue that it's entirely cheap humour at the expense of Japanese people and/or the cultural/language barrier. The film was primarily about two people forming a connection thanks to the isolation of being in an alien environment, not to laugh at 2D stereotypes.

I'm sorry to break it to you folks, but the Japanese make fun of Westerners and their ignorance about Japanese culture, language, etc. all the time on their TV shows. They can make fun of us, but not the other way around?

Been quite a many years since I saw Virgin but I recall it being pretty good. Translation is excellent, although I hate Anna Faris and her scenes.

Speaking of Translation, there's like a 10 second scene of Johansson in a train, on her way from Tokyo to Kyoto. The camera takes a 3 second (or so) peek out of the window. We see a random building.

Three years later I took a pic of the same building, from a bullet train moving over 200 km / hour. I noticed it three weeks later.

As Eva says that accounts for a minute aspect of the film. If all people can do is get stuck on is that in Lost in Translation they've really missed the entire point of the film.

They do that in Korea too. It did make me laugh when in Japan. Not once could they get my name (Alex) right.

My Korean friend calls me Arex which is kind of funny as I cannot pronounce her name either (Su-Kyong). I usually call her Su-Yong which she doesn't mind. To be fair neither Japanese or Korean has the rolling tongue L sound.
