I really don't remember the film ever being that dark. Of course I could be wrong. I accept that. Maybe the ideal brightness is somewhere in between the R1 and R2?

There is nothing wrong with the brightness of the R1, it's dark in the areas that need to be and bright in the areas that should be bright. The only reason you think the transfer is dark is because you're comparing it to the UK transfer, which is as bright as the sun!

Are there any members on the forum who own the R1 Anniversary disc and has issues with the brightness? I know I don't, and I've seen the film on LD, Film4 showing, and r2UK DVD.

What about the brown suits? The blacks look purer on the R2. The remasters seem very saturated to me.

The suits are not brown in any of the r1 screengrabs, nor are the blacks "purer" in the r2uk grabs, in fact if you do a colour drop test in photoshop the black levels are pretty close between the r1/r2uk grabs, except for the slow-mo intro shot (which has the warmer colour temp on the r1, so slightly weaker blacks) and the cigarette smoking scene (in which the r2uk suits are blatantly blue - a telltale sign that the image is overly bright).

I Have the usa blu-ray and am very pleased with it previously had the mr white 10th anniversary LE.which was not good at all. i'm betting this new uk vbu-ray will be identical to the usa one. has anyone come across caps of the dutch filmworks blu-ray?

I wish I had them both so I could do a live comparison instead of just looking at caps. From those caps I happen to prefer the look of the R2 and those suits look brown-red to me (at least in the first two caps). It's possible that the caps chosen don't best reflect the differences/qualities in the image which is why it's best not to go solely by them. I wish I still had my old VHS - I don't recall it being so dark. But I suppose if everyone is happy with the R1 it puts me out on my own. I don't mind being wrong (once in a while...)

Just FYI: The Dutch Filmworks is Region B.

Do you really wish? You've said a few times you wouldn't buy the R1 LE .

Based on those caps... but if everyone and his dog is saying that in play the R1 is better I could be wrong?

Well, I still don't like the packaging... that much is true. I'm not saying I'm gonna go buy the R1 now. I'm just saying it might look better in play as that's the consensus - and usually I agree with the majority at Bullets. I'm fine with the R2 until the BD. If everyone gives that the thumbs up then maybe I'm wrong and it is a better transfer overall. Circumstances change. What's so hard to understand?

I wasn't aware of that. Hope the petrol can is limited on the BD also. I hate tacky gimmick packaging in general.

The DVD petrol can is a serious pain in the arse! The metal top doesn't actually fasten securely (heck it doesn't fasten at all), so it always falls right off the damn thing.

What annoys me is the bloody tape always comes off it (same with the Blade Runner set)

Oh right, ignore my comment above then Mark. I thought you got a keep case Grim. I guess not.

Mine doesn't stick on either but how often do you actually pick it up? I dislike LE packaging if it's massive but here it's no bigger really than a regular keep case, so no different on the shelve.
