It sounds like you have a faulty DVD, you said yourself it no longer plays.

The Good the Bad and the Ugly SE has altered the colours slightly to favouring red hues over the original yellowish tint. It's slightly sharper though. I can't see how you'd reckon improved picture is more important than the best cut of the film...? The additonal scenes don't even have the original audio and the entire track has ben 5.1 remixed. The old UK theatrical has mono and is probably the best version. I'd like to see a direct comparison between the UK-theatrical and US-theatrical, however. DVD Beaver have a comparison between the German-theatrical and US-theatrical, but transfers can differ even within R2 territories can't they?

Nope its on all the dvds, read a few reviews and see for yourself :) shit transfer if you notice the problem and once you do you will never want to see the dvd again. I have only seen it on a few dvd transfers over the years and each time its awfull if you catch sight of it as once you do thats it film ruined.

Is that the only difference?

It's anamorphic for one which for me is very high on my want list. Above minor cropping, minor colour changes etc . . . (as in the anamorphic DVD maybe having these).

This alone makes it the better DVD, oh and the extras of course too.

The thing is in order to get the better cut you have to sit through an entire film in non-anamorphic. The SE has a few "minutes" of extra footage but it's all anamorphic.

I don't alone but for the reasons I mentioned above I do. If the better cut had a large duration difference it would be different.

If they're by the same studio I'd say it's very likely they used exactly the same master.

The old release is anamorphic as well, it just hasn't been restored.

You consider 18 minutes only a few?

I've only ever seen the extended cut of GBU and I'm satisfied with it, they should've hired an impersonator play Eli Wallach's role of Tuco for the added scenes, time hasn't been kind on his voice (Eastwood faired better I thought).

My bad.

My bad x2. I didn't realise it was that much. I may give the TC ago yet.

Ah yes I forgot that one. I prefer the American cut too but tbh I had trouble spotting the added footage despite their being oodles of it. I love both cuts but yes the American cut is better.

Isn't the non-American/International Cut the Director's Cut?

Technically both cuts of The Shining are director's cuts, Brad. The 'American' cut is the original theatrical version, I believe, but then he later cut a load of footage out after critic resonse or something. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!

That's what I heard so the later cut would be the DC, no?

Oddly I also heard Kubrick wanted to keep the longer cut only in America which is why to this day it's exclusive to R1.

But the annoying thing here is, that he only produced the shorter second cut after the response to his first cut, which kind of implies that the original cut was his director's cut, and that the second one was to please everyone. But with Kubrick being a perfectionist, it's hard for me to decide which one to choose.

i just love kubrick's movie-the slow pacing suits the material perfectly, jack's descent into madness builds up superbly in the longer version.brilliant film.

Brad, I would seriously urge you to watch the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. It is not only my favourite western of all time (although admittedly, I've not seen too many) but it is one of my favourite classics. It is an awesome experience - the music, tension and long evil closeups are just fantastic.

The theatrical version runs at around 2hrs 40mins and is the perfect length, in terms of pacing. The extended version is around 3hrs. The additional footage is included on the theatrical version anyway, as deleted scenes. Watch these and tell me if you felt that they were necessary.

The quality of the theatrical version is fine. Didn't spoil my enjoyment of the film. But I'm not overly anal about these things. If you watch it on a 1000" projected wall and notice every single artefact, then you're in for a rough ride.

Most importantly though, the theatrical print has the original English 2.0 mono. The 5.1 remix utilises dodgy sound effects, especially for the guns, cannons and other such explosions.

Wasn't the theatrical R2 like £2 or something in these recent mad sales? :?:

This is more "must see" than all of them. 8)

Nah j/k btw. :D

I'll swap it with you sometime if you like (temporarily). Grim and I do this, I recently gave him Los Debutantes (in all its whipped cream glory) for M.

Kubrick's a strange man. Like insisting on all his films being release P/S or FullFrame on "home media" simply because that's what most tv's was formated at back then...
So long, and thanks for all the fish!

He certainly is. Not all he insisted upon being in 4:3 but yep many were. The Shining would've been even better in 1.85:1. NOT 2.35:1 though.

Cheers Bisc.

I can't see it, Kubrick wanted it 4:3 and I suspect WB will keep it in this ratio for ever more (now he's dead).
