The Good the Bad and the Ugly SE has altered the colours slightly to favouring red hues over the original yellowish tint. It's slightly sharper though. I can't see how you'd reckon improved picture is more important than the best cut of the film...? The additonal scenes don't even have the original audio and the entire track has ben 5.1 remixed. The old UK theatrical has mono and is probably the best version. I'd like to see a direct comparison between the UK-theatrical and US-theatrical, however. DVD Beaver have a comparison between the German-theatrical and US-theatrical, but transfers can differ even within R2 territories can't they?

Is that the only difference?Markgway wrote:The Good the Bad and the Ugly SE has altered the colours slightly to favouring red hues over the original yellowish tint. It's slightly sharper though.
It's anamorphic for one which for me is very high on my want list. Above minor cropping, minor colour changes etc . . . (as in the anamorphic DVD maybe having these).
This alone makes it the better DVD, oh and the extras of course too.
The thing is in order to get the better cut you have to sit through an entire film in non-anamorphic. The SE has a few "minutes" of extra footage but it's all anamorphic.
I don't alone but for the reasons I mentioned above I do. If the better cut had a large duration difference it would be different.Markgway wrote:I can't see how you'd reckon improved picture is more important than the best cut of the film...?
If they're by the same studio I'd say it's very likely they used exactly the same master.Markgway wrote:DVD Beaver have a comparison between the German-theatrical and US-theatrical, but transfers can differ even within R2 territories can't they?

The old release is anamorphic as well, it just hasn't been restored.bradavon wrote:It's anamorphic for one which for me is very high on my want list.
You consider 18 minutes only a few?The SE has a few "minutes" of extra footage.
I've only ever seen the extended cut of GBU and I'm satisfied with it, they should've hired an impersonator play Eli Wallach's role of Tuco for the added scenes, time hasn't been kind on his voice (Eastwood faired better I thought).

My bad.EvaUnit02 wrote:The old release is anamorphic as well, it just hasn't been restored.
My bad x2. I didn't realise it was that much. I may give the TC ago yet.You consider 18 minutes only a few?
Ah yes I forgot that one. I prefer the American cut too but tbh I had trouble spotting the added footage despite their being oodles of it. I love both cuts but yes the American cut is better.saltysam wrote:what about kubrick's the shining? i much prefer the longer american cut personally.
Isn't the non-American/International Cut the Director's Cut?

But the annoying thing here is, that he only produced the shorter second cut after the response to his first cut, which kind of implies that the original cut was his director's cut, and that the second one was to please everyone. But with Kubrick being a perfectionist, it's hard for me to decide which one to choose.

Brad, I would seriously urge you to watch the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. It is not only my favourite western of all time (although admittedly, I've not seen too many) but it is one of my favourite classics. It is an awesome experience - the music, tension and long evil closeups are just fantastic.
The theatrical version runs at around 2hrs 40mins and is the perfect length, in terms of pacing. The extended version is around 3hrs. The additional footage is included on the theatrical version anyway, as deleted scenes. Watch these and tell me if you felt that they were necessary.
The quality of the theatrical version is fine. Didn't spoil my enjoyment of the film. But I'm not overly anal about these things. If you watch it on a 1000" projected wall and notice every single artefact, then you're in for a rough ride.
Most importantly though, the theatrical print has the original English 2.0 mono. The 5.1 remix utilises dodgy sound effects, especially for the guns, cannons and other such explosions.
Wasn't the theatrical R2 like £2 or something in these recent mad sales?

I thought the UK and US theatrical were the same?Markgway wrote:The Good the Bad and the Ugly SE has altered the colours slightly to favouring red hues over the original yellowish tint.
