An unusually clever little brew, considering the 2006 HK cinema output. With Daichi Harashima (Lost In Time) as a super-bright kid (thanks to superenhanced food products) that gets out the lab and explores the world with his online friend (Korean child actress Cho Jeong-Eun). Issues of abandonment, families lying to each other and discovering innocence blends with Home Alone style humour and oddly dark scenes, courtesy of Cha Chuen-Yee (Once Upon A Time In Triad Society).

Not special or unexpected but entertaining UFO comedy about guys and their issues. Kept alive by the troupe of actors, especially Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Ann Bridgewater. OOP dvd and vcd but got the laserdisc cheap off ebay.

Shining Boy and Little Randy 2/5
This is an adaptation of Sayuri Sakamoto's novel, which itself is based on a true story of Japan's first elephant trainer. Tetsu is a junior highschool pupil who has some serious issues with his dysfunctional family. They own an animal ranch, hiring out creatures for film and TV work. Due to some financial difficulties, Tetsu's mum, Saori, is forced to sell a few animals in exchange for some elephants, with the intention of scoring more studio deals. Tetsu immediately bonds with Randy - a baby elephant who is reluctant to follow orders - and soon discovers his ability to "shine" - i.e. communicate telepathically with the elephants (hence the film's title). He travels to Thailand to become an elephant trainer and returns home with new plans for his family's ranch, as well as mending his relationship with his mother.
The story is simplistic and if you've seen a Japanese melodrama before, remarkably predictable. Subsequently, there is precious little to hook the viewer and keep them interested. It all gets horrendously boring too quickly. Having said that, the performances are outstanding and with this being Yuya Yagira's second film after Nobody Knows, it is clear that this kid has a great future in acting. Who would've thought that he would go from zero to professional in a few short years? The animal work is exceptional as well, very nice to watch. A quick search on imdb reveals that this is director Shunsaku Kawake's theatrical debut and his background lies with Fuji TV productions. Shining Boy and Little Randy gets points for effort but ultimately feels dragged and unfulfilling.

No, Grim. Romero is right. There's no way pretenders like Leung Chiu Wai and Jacky Cheung could possibly compare to all time greats such as Milla Jovovitch from Resident Evil and Ben Affleck from Armageddon.

Deadwood: Season 1 - 4/5
I really enjoyed the whole of season 1, watched it for the first time over the weekend, really good stories and lovely character development. Each person has their own story, it was nice to see Ian McShane playing a ruthless person. Also liked the Doc, and Seth Bullock. Hope that Season 2 is better, love the way it ends in the 1st season. Felt sorry for the minister thou

Certainly it's one of Woo's best films, no question - but The Killer and A Better Tomorrow are also right up there. I liked Heroes Shed No Tears as well.

Despite Anita Yuen managing to act from within her poor old age make-up, Peter Chan's drama about growing old is overstuffed and devoid of as much magic as it thinks it presents. Usual black acting hole Alan Tam manages to do his finest work ever though.

The Corruptor
Not bad at all and also featuring one very "Chow Yun-fat moment", a very diabolic smile after he beats up the guy in that kitchen. Chow Yun-fat is just so cool.
The movie was entertaining and I really liked the cinematography, but there were also some things I disliked (the rap-music f.e. and the not believable "so-hard" character of Chow).
Entertaining, watchable and better than The Replacement Killers at least.
