Okay I want to get Ninja Scroll (Anniversary Ed.), and was wondering if the Madman release was not a NTSC->PAL conversion, but native PAL

I've checked Michael R4 review, and there is no mentioned:

The R4 of Ninja Scroll is NTSC>PAL and thus is made of absolute fail, you must buy the R1 to win - just live with it being a DVD-18. Also avoid the R4's of the Vampire D movies.

Get the R1 LEs, they are more expensive than Jesus but are made of absolute win (they look so 733t sitting on my shelf). The books in the sets are fucking awesome.

Patlabor 2 is the better of the two films, but have solid detective plots though and excellent music.

I'll do screen caps of them vs. my shitty R4 non-anamorphic NTSC>PAL abortions when I have the time.

I actually enjoyed Patlabor to Patlabor 2, I use to have these on VHS, but never upgraded so was really happy when I saw the LE versions. Wil def get them

Might be native-PAL, but only a DD2.0 track is present (the original sound mix is in 5.1). Fuck this release and get an Asian one.

Madman have acquired the rights to recent Korean swordplay flick, Shadowless Sword (from the Bichunmoo director) and Japanese flick Death Trance starring Tak Sakaguchi from Versus. Both to be released on DVD in 2007.

What went wrong with Silmido, it was supposed to be DD5.1. Idiots. I wasn't going to get it anyway as the HK R3 has DTS but DD2.0. That must be a cop up.

Fuck Cutie Honey though. Creator/Writer/Director of one of the greatest shows TV shows ever doing tripe like that is unforgivable.

You also forget it has the same UK DVD extras BUT more importantly a proper Native-PAL Transfer, the UK DVD is reportly awful.

Two in particular that look interesting are:

* Kairo (aka - Pulse), the HK DVD has DD5.1 but no extras, the Japanese only DD2.0 and the UK R2 DD2.0 only again but while it has the same extras as the R4 it has a woeful NTSC-PAL Transfer, it's reportly awful.

* Rashomon: The Criterion has a full length commentary but otherwise only a 13 minute and 6 minute featurette. The Criterion is currently the best world-wide version. The R4 is looking to be the definitive version of this Kurosawa film.

p.s - I'll probably pick up Rashomon but considering the cost of R4 DVDs I doubt I'll pick up Kairo, the film deserves a re-purchase from the HK DVD but over £10 is too much for me.

I didn't bother highlighting them since they were a given with Madman.

The R4's of The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada and Cache (Hidden) takes massive shits upon all existing English language releases.

I wouldn't say massive, a bit ott:

* Hidden only has one extra extra: 24 Realities Per Second: A film about Michael Haneke by Nina Kusturica & Eva Testor
* The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada: DTS + in terms of extras lengths there's only 6 minutes in it. I don't know the quality agreed but neither do you:

Audio commentary with Tommy Lee Jones, Dwight Yoakam and January Jones
Making of ~ 14 mins
Making of Soundtrack ~ 7 mins
Deleted Scenes ~ 17 mins
Presentation of the Film at Cannes ~ 15 mins
Interview with screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga ~ 20 mins
Footage from the Paris Premiere ~ 8 mins
Theatrical Poster Gallery ~ 2 mins
Production Stills Gallery ~ 2 mins

On the one hand the new interview and Paris footage comes to an additional 28 minutes but the Making Of. is 12 minutes shorter (possibly a different making of) and oddly the deleted scenes are 10 minutes shorter.

Both the UK R2 and R4 have the commentary and the UK R2 more deleted scenes.

The extras overall agreed go to the R4 but no not a massive improvement and at the end of the day the price for both on eBay is already well under £10 (and online if you look around), the R4 will be more than this for sometime to come.

Both the UK R2 and R4 versions of The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada and Hidden are respectable and there's not a huge amount in it.

I bought a Madman anime boxset on Friday (GITS:SAC S1:- native-PAL and superior to the R1 & R2 DVDs which are riddled with problems like sound drop-out, severe compression artefacts, badly timed subs.). Anyway it came packaged in a M-lock case (like what your R4 24 S1 boxset came in, Brad), which the R4 market seems to have shifted towards for packaging TV-DVD boxsets. I'm very pleased with compactness of the packaging, the M-lock case houses 7 discs in a case which is roughly equal in dimensions to two amarays.

There's a violent debate about Madman's shift using to M-lock cases on their forums, if anyone's interested in having their say. (They've made up the term "fatpacks". No one else uses this name for the cases and a google search yields weight loss videos and fat chick pr0n ).

Shinobi review. Native-PAL transfer + DD5.1 and extras. Good alternative if you're not keen on paying a zillion dollars for the R2J, which I'd imagine is most people.

I already have it and am very pleased with it . got this alongside Azumi 2, Now want to get Ping Pong 2 Disk special Edition from Madman, best english friendly version there is
