Yes on release. I have the HK R3 for a Luc Besson penned script it's decent and easily Jet's best Hollywood film but it's still not a patch on his HK output. I don't mean in the action stakes (I was entertained) but in the story, while no where near as weak as all his previous Western output it was still very weak indeed

Why are you switching between Danny the Dog and Unleashed? They're the same film, except the US got a watered down version. Unleashed is an awful retitle.

Oh sorry. Yeah, Unleashed is a poo title, it has a double meaning though.
I wasn't going to buy the non watered down edition.

Anyway, yes, "The Weather Man" is awesome. Verbinski's only decent film? Wouldn't say so. I liked "Pirates" a lot. Will watch part 2 tomorrow. "The Mexican" is also supposed to be quite good.

However, "The Weather Man" is probably Verbinski's only film that has a lot of depth and is not superficial.

Pirates 1 and Ring are AWFUL, okay Pirates 1 isn't awful and Ring is at least well made (but then so are most Ratner films) but Ring was such a lame film compared to Ringu so yeah probably awful and Pirates 1 was sooo average. Neither are decent though.

Fair point and an interesting one. Still it would've worked better if they'd thought it through a little more.

Brad I havent seen the originals so didnt realise it was the same but it just felt predictable, Parker Posey being (in effect) an unwilling accomplice, trying to be the voice of reason etc.

I enjoyed Pirates a lot too.

The costume/choreography were very good I thought and the more "traditional" Korean music was outstanding and really cool. But I still found the story confusing.

Jack Sparrow is completely wrong.
Elizabeth becomes a warrior woman (WTF happened to the fragile girl from POTC ?).
The story makes no sense, the editing is all wrong, character development is non-existent... and the ending is abysmal.

How did they manage to screw this one up, I don't know.

Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest: 3/5
The thing almost everyone will write is that the first part was better. I agree with them. However, the second one was really good as well. As Tom mentioned, the editing was a bit strange at times as there were many continuity errors that I have noticed.
I also wouldn't say that Jack Sparrow is completely wrong, but just a bit different. He still has many characteristics of the original Sparrow. His best scenes were in my opinion when he was the king of the cannibals.

Tom, you give PotC 2 only 0.25/5 while at the same time giving "Twins Effect 2" a 5/5 (well, at least judging from the fact that it is in your top 10 films). That's kinda... dull.

TE2 has a great storyline. POTC2 has no coherent storyline at all.
TE2 offers at least some character development. POTC2 takes exisitng characters and turns them upside-down.
TE2 has great original music. POTC2 is a rehash of POTC and Speed.
TE2 has action. POTC2 has a parody of Jackie Chan's Operation Condor (the big ball rolling down the mountain at the beginning).
The big bad guy of TE2 is an empress. The big bad guy of POTC2 is a fish.

Good SFX don't make a film, I'm afraid.
Nothing can save this one.

Anyway...

LOL, so I wasn't the only one who thought that. I like how they used it for the same reason Jackie has used it, too, which is to escape from the aborigines.

There were other scenes that reminded me of Jackie Chan-films. If they hadn't re-invented the big ball scene, I might wouldn't have noticed it, but after that scene it became obvious that they got a lot of inspirations from JC movies, such as the three brothers fighting each other in "Dragons Forever" or the pirate attack of the Western ship in "Project A".

But sometimes I believe you just bash certain Hollywood films and then prefer shitty films just for the sake of it.

I love films. I don't care where they are from as long as they are good.

The Donkey episode in Father of the Pride was hilarious

I hated how EVERY FUCKING THING was explained with lengthly expository dialogue in The Ring. Also the teleporting shit at the end totally destroyed the original scene.

Pirates is fun but really average (as you said) and highly forgettable.

Unknown to many (or only me maybe...), this is the missing third installment of The Inspector Wears Skirts series. A series already mediocre, taken to turkey levels here. You get: lame comedy (even if it largely involves Amy Yip's breasts, we're bored), padding disguising itself as pop culture references and a distinct lack of action entertainment that at least got you through the other films.

I actually quite enjoyed this. It's an extension of the Little Red Riding Hood fairlytale. Using Rashomon style flashbacks, we explore the same story through various characters' eyes. It's nicely written and wonderfully integrated. Funny characters as well. The budget is not that great, so the animation is a little cheap looking (almost like a cut scene from a video game) but that didn't bother me.

Yeah, it's the worst of the series.

Heroes Shed no Tears (John Woo - 1986): 4/5

Crazy little action film.
Lots of Woo-esque gunfights and explosions, charismatic characters (Eddy Ko and Lam Ching-Ying).

A little bit too short and simple perhaps, but entertaining nonetheless.

Great DVD by HK Vidéo.
