Yeah the colour differences are big in some images, not sure which is "Correct" like the film makers wanted, but its some change.

Well the Cinema, VHS, DVD, and the old Blu-Ray all have the same Gold/Blue pallet...

I don't recall the gladiator scenes being blue in the cinema, they were more like the new transfer IF i'm remembering correctly. The old BD clearly used the same masters as the DVD releases so it's no shocker that they'd match up colour-wise.

Well unless I'm mistaken, the old and new BD have the same source too. I saw the same black spots on the screenshots from both Hi Def releases

They may have been struck from the same print but I doubt they're using the same HD master that I think was used for the DVD/BD (ie: blueish tinge, lots of EE). I could be wrong about that as TBH I've not really been following the threads on the new release.

Loads of people over at AVS Forum say it's a new Master. I thought the DVDs were fine EE wise, no?

Surely if the DVDs and Old BD used the same Master, it's at least got the right colours. Personally I prefer the colours on the original BD. They're too yellow now but I seriously doubt I'll be bothered when watching the new BD.

The colours on the new BD look different but I'm sure its worth the upgrade from my old DVD - so much more detail.

The old BD was worth the upgrade. Perfect? Of course not. Better than the DVDs? Definitely.

I'll actually stay away from the new disc. It's been cleaned up so much it doesn't look like the original film!

Will pick the old BD up when its cheaper


Not saying others are silly to get the new one, just that they've changed to look of the film too much.

you can have Brads, as no one else will want that shit looking transfer from the devils loin. I am not even sure if you are havin a laff, the old version is shit with massive edge enhancment and massive white halo's around people making them look like they have force fields set to protect, if you prefer that detail free version over a spanking new version with some minor colour changes, you are crackers.

Ohh you will be able to get rid of it, as there are many dipshits out there people will buy the old Tin version for 15 quid still, just becuase of the tin

Seriously, no one here's seen it. It's only out in Holland and even all the online shops have it down for pre-order. We're all basing our opinion on screen captures. In other words, your opinion is no less equipped than any others.

Any of the BDs are worth upgrading from the DVD (the last DVD was released 5 years ago!) and considering the "best version" is soon to be released, you're better off waiting now. Even ignoring the new colour scheme (which I'm guessing is different from all DVD + Old BD releases) it's still obviously miles better in every other stake. Sharpness for one going to be loads better. It is on the Old BD and that's got DNR applied on top.

Grow some cahooners man and make your own mind up .

Ask yourself this I would say
Can I see edge enhancement in transfers (as many cannot), white halos around most skylines and objects?

If so then dont bother.
That for me killed the transfer dead, it has other problems, but for me the halos just did my noggin in.

You hate the colours that much? Maybe EE hell was a little OTT. It's certainly excessive but still perfectly watchable (it's hard bootleg quality) and yes it's easily better than the DVDs, repeating what I've previously said. Many people on forums tend to exaggerate things too.

The screens I've seen have a sort of crimson/orange look to them.

If it was a HK movie people would be up in arms

Anyway it's just a step to far for me when it changes the original look of the film like that. Palette is important

That's because online HK fandom is generally made up of over-reactive ignoramuses when it comes to the film transfers, hardly any of the HK naysayers ever saw their favourite films in the cinema and are usually just going on fuzzy memories of cheapo VHS releases from the 70s and 80s, and woe betide a DVD/BD distributor releases a product that dares to clash with their own subjective view of the film!

No one's moaning about the colours on this new release because 1. It's a monumental improvement in every other aspect of the image and 2. So far no one is 100% certain which is the more accurate scheme, we can only hope that by the time this new remaster hits US/UK shores either Ridley Scott or John Mathieson have addressed the issue (although I won't hold my breath).

So for the time being we have to go on common sense, and you don't need to be a genius to tell that the old Sapphire release is an over-processed mess with contrast boosting up the yin-yang, which has clearly affected the naturality of the colours. Just look at these comparison grabs:

Which transfer accurately conveys a scene lit by firelight? The one that shows a slightly orangey Maximus basking in the glow of a yellow-orange fire or the one the that shows a completely neutral Maximus lit by an extremely bland, pale salmon fire? Anyone who has ever seen a log/coal fire will know the answer to this question. (Notice as well how the diffuseness of the light can be seen in the remastered shot whereas over-zealous contrast boosting and sharpening has completely robbed this from the old edition).
