In fairness to Mann, he has always been a fan of low-lighting; long before he adopted digital.

Historians believe Dillinger only killed one person during the period depicted in the film, not sure why Mann made the Dillinger gang appear more lethal than they actually were.

There are film cameras that could have been used to produce a similar sort of intimate action seen in the Public Enemies shootout, Arricam Lite for instance or maybe the Moviecam Compact.

Yup, despite its narrative/plot failings, it's totally a highlight of the year.

It's more dramatic but given this is Mann, it is very odd then.

I didn't know that, thanks.

John Woo did a pretty good job with getting very close to the action, with the hospital scene in Hard Boiled.

True but it has an even closer/in-the-action feel in Public Enemies.

Wouldn't it be a little bit TOO close on the action, making it hard to follow?

Nope. Not IMO in Public Enemies, it works very well.

Avatar number 1 :) ahhh it is winning many hearts it seems, even the ladies I am finding love it :D

I have seen it 3 times so far, for me it is not in my top films of the year mind you, but it is a good cinema experience that's for sure. So I may as well see it a few more times in 3D, becuase I know I will not be able to ever see it like that again for countless years.

Midnight Eye's best of 2009 JP films lists:
http://www.midnighteye.com/features/best-of-2009.shtml

4 of their 6 writers named Love Exposure as the best Japanese films of the year. But it's actually a 2008 film. That's why it doesn't appear on my 2009 list. It does appear on my "best movies of the decade" list, though. Number 2, if I recall correctly.

Pasted over from my other thread:

Here's a list of my favourite movies from 2009. I may have left a few off as I've watched tonnes this last 18 monts!!

What do you think of the current state of the industry? I would say a there are a hefty amount of really good films coming out, just it seems like all the others are getting increasingly poor, so bad in fact that nearly all new films aren't even worth trying

Ones I have, or will buy:

A Prophet
A Serious Man
Bad Lieutenant
District 13: Ultimatum
Drag Me to Hell
Fantastic Mr. Fox
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
In the Loop
Inglourious Basterds
The Limits of Control
The Road
Moon
Shinjuku Incident
Survival of the Dead
Where the Wild Things Are
Terminator Salvation
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Universal Soldier: Regeneration

*From my tastes, can you recommend something I may've overlooked?

Honourable mentions. films I enjoyed but wont revisit more than once or twice

Avatar
Coudy with a Chance of Meatballs
Crank: High Voltage
District 9
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo <-- I may end up getting this if the trilogy as a whole appeals
Land of the Lost
Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
Nowhere Boy
Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire
Surrogates
Thirst
Up
Watchmen

Horrible overhyped pile of shit film of the year goes to...BrĂ¼no :dontknow:

Thirst was one of the worst film I have seen for a very long time, utter shit from beginning to end :o how crap can a director get.

Didn't think Thirst was that bad as it was well made and acted, just failed to do anything for me.

I did not even think it was well acted or well made, the entire film made me cringe at how poor it was.
