Can someone explain how Customs duty differs from TAX and Excise Duty? Do any of the items we order have any Customs Duty imposed on them?

Thanks.

Well isn't it that all products coming into the UK for sale have VAT added onto them, and all things you personally import into the UK which exceed £17 or whatever it is, you pay customs duty? Because the stuff you personally import doesn't have VAT on it.

So in other words, are you saying the limit for importing is still being increased? What's excise duty then? Bloody hell it's complicated.

customs duty is i think 3.5% on items over £18. so with this new limit you won't pay that but will still get wacked for 17.5% VAT & post office handling fee. i could be totally wrong of course.

I reckon you're right, and as you'll still be charged Royal Mail will still charge you their ridiculously admin fee.

In other words, nothing changes :(.

Right, you know the £18 limit, well is that JUST the value of the item itself, or is that with p'n'p included? There's a box set for £17.38 I want to import, but that's BEFORE postage.

Cheers.

It was just an Amazon seller but I ended up getting it off eBay anyway, hopefully I'll be OK.

No it doesn't include postage BUT if what you're buying before postage is over £18, the amount they charge you will also include the postage cost too.

It should've got through fine but if that's £17.38 in another currency it may have got caught due to different exchange rates used.
