Get over it. I think only 1 maybe 2 of DD's DVDs have been cut. Actually I don't know but I know it's minimal, if any at all.

Stop comparing them to a completely different company. When will you get it that it's not the same person running the show? You'd think you'd be pleased quality DVDs of Martial Arts films are finally coming to America.

Your reasoning is so warped. I doubt DD could do anything to please you. I'm convinced you'll find something to blame DD for when they release Fist of Legend. Oh look the cover art is too pick. I'm refuse to buy it!
That's complete bullshit. I'm pretty easy to please. I just want the movie to have decent video and sound, and be uncut and subbed. That's ALL. And I've always been very clear about it.
Yi-Long wrote:That way, we'll have a higher chance of the Thai and HK DVD's having english subs.
That's very unlikely.

I'd rather a choice in the market place then being stuck with buying either a HK or Thai DVD.
Like with Ong-Bak? Where the asian versions werent allowed to have english subs on them!?

OK, I mean so far DD released two Thai films. "Born to Fight" and "Tom Yum Goong". And apart from the title change of TYG, there's nothing wrong with any of these two releases.

I believe they cut TYG, but maybe they only cut it for the theatrical release and kept the DVD uncut!?

Dont know about the DD release of Born to Fight, but I have the region 2 UK version.

Their release is a two discer with both, the original, analtered cut and the shorter US version with the new music etc.

Aw ok... and how is the transfer for the uncut version? Is it as good as the cut version, or did they not care about a good transfer for that version? Doesnt it have ANY extras? On which disc are they? On the disc with the cut version or on the disc with the uncut version?

Ah well, have the region 2 UK, which is pretty good. Uncut, and extras on the 2nd disc.

Aw oki, that's good news for the R1 fans. Well done to Dragon Dynasty on that release.

Again, I am not against Dragon Dynasty, but I AM against cutting movies, supposedly for an international/western audience. And let's be honest, Weinstein has a habit of cutting movies.

Special Features:
Disc 1 (US Version):
# Commentary by Asian film expert Bey Logan
# Deleted fight scene
# Featurette: "No Wires Attached: Making The Protector"
# Featurette: "Making Tony Jaa"
# Featurette: "The Director's Guided Tour: The Stairwell Scene"
# Featurette: "Tony Jaa Martial Arts Demonstrations"
# Mobisode: 8 Limbs" (A Cell Phone Video)
# Soundtrack promotion: The Protector
# Theatrical trailer

Disc 2 (Uncut Version):
# Featurette: "Making Tom yum goong"
# Short films from the "Take On Tony Jaa" contest

About the image quality, I can only quote DVD Town:
Presented in what the packaging describes as a "matted" 16x9 widescreen format preserving the aspect ratio of its original theatrical exhibition for the DVD transfer. The two prints of the film, in the international and American cut, vary ever so slightly. The film appears a tad brighter and sharper in the American cut of the film. Nevertheless, both look solid as the image is vibrant though not as rich or saturated as it could be. While it´s not the most impressive image Dragon Dynasty has released, like the "Kill Zone" ("SPL") DVD from a few months back, it´s solid, with few complaints. There´s no noticeable damage or wear anywhere on the DVD. Overall, this is a good looking DVD.

Aw oki. Thanks LD. Sounds like they at least did a proper job on that DVD by having the uncut version on the disc with the least extras...

That's 90% of DDs output. Why are you still pissed at them then?

Yawn, you cite one example and think it's gospel.

When will you accept DD is not the same as the films Weinstein used to release?

It's the same quality on both discs. It is a bad example though as the UK DVD is better.

Shock horror wait for it Yi the DD release of Born to Fight is a world best. It's a 2 Disc SE beating both the UK and Australian DVDs! I better you'd find a fault with it though.

Like I keep saying (but you keep ignoring) Weinstein DOES NOT run DD. He is the ultimate boss but he has no involvement with the day to day running.

Weinstein's cut DVDs which you keep bring up where released over 5 years go. It's NOT the same company!

I guess I just hold grudges. Also, not that many of DD's have been the best release available. If any.

So? Have they apologized? What keeps them from doing it again?

He still owns it, and Harvey is still a hands-on kinda guy.

Who says I WANT to find faults with DD's releases? I WANT them to release good quality DVD's. Hell, I want nothing more.

And how many times do I have to keep telling you, I have nothing against Dragon Dynasty, when they do their job.
And as long as we still dont have an uncut, subbed Fist of Legend, I will keep bitching and moaning.

A fair few have. I've just ordered Dog Bite Dog which looks better than the HK effort, which is already very good.
Yi-Long wrote:So? Have they apologized?
What difference would that really make? If companies apologise it could open them up to being sued, in extreme cases. I don't see what an apologise would really solve but agreed DD shouldn't make the same mistakes again.

Except they are on the whole and you still nitpick faults.

You sighed at DD picking up Chocolate without knowing anything about it whatsoever!

It just means that like Ong-Bak and TYG, it will probably be hard to order a subtitled DVD of the movie in a few months time, but we will have to wait untill DD feels like releasing it some day (like they are doing with The Rebel)
That's all I NEED to know, in order to sigh with disappointment.

Really? Thanks. I'm sure the DD is also good. I'm not a perfectionist when it comes to PQ. I went for the DD for the Bey commentary and otherwise English extras. I'd prefer that over a subtitled commentary, even if it goes out of sync a bit.

I'm also keen to check out what DD DVDs are like.

Probably not, because the Weinsteins have the American distribution rights for this. It is very likely that their contract with Baa-Ram-Ewe includes a paragraph that forbids them to release the film with English subs.

Of course, I could be wrong, though.

Evebn if the zweinsteins didnt bought those rigths, most thai company's release the dvd's now without subs...

Really? Bugger!

Does that just affect films with Western appeal (like Martial Arts) or all films? Do you mean generally or just Thai films from Thai companies?

I've not been in Thailand since early last year but Mangpong were still putting English subs on their DVDs then. I wasn't looking for anything in particular though. Whenever I go to Thailand I like to pick up several rarer Asian films as Thai DVDs in shops are so ridiculously cheap.

they are still releasing movies with subs luckily, it depends on the company..

and luckily not all do that stupid censoring where they blur the guns and smoking...instead in the movie BRAVE they just do scenes now where the guy pulls the cigaret from someones mouth and says ; smoking is bad for you !

Posted: 13 Mar 2008, 09:14
by bradavon
What! :?

I was hoping that was a thing of the past. Which studios censor their films? Do Mangpong?

I saw Music and Lyrics in the cinema in BKK (I was literally dragged there) and during the end there is a large Buddhist statue in the background for most of the last scene and instead of subtly censoring it they stuck on a MASSIVE pixelation effect all over it. It was incredibly distracting. My Thai friend didn't seem to mind. I guess they're used to it.

Ironically I could've popped down to one of the street markets and picked it up cheaper, and completely uncensored the same day on DVD :D

Of all the Thai Martial Arts films coming out Chocolate is the one I am most looking forward too.

I guess everyone else is the same. I'll wait for the DD DVD though.

the worst example of censoring is with this dvd

http://www.ethaicd.com/show.php?pid=21982

i think they blurred out at least 30 minutes (or more) in the whole movie, because they are sticking guns in people faces the whole time and seem to smoke also the whole time, after this dvd i was afraid to ever watch a thai dvd again, but fortunately it didnt happen that much anymore.

last censorship blur i remember was in the movie me myself and I
