DD is also very good mono, and I don't recall problems with image either. Maybe worse subs?

Looks a wee bit edge enhanced. I think they might've reduced the grain a bit. :?:

I wish they'd release In the Line of Duty 4 outside of a box set. I own the R1 but would like it without dubtitles and a 5.1 soundtrack (or rather the choice of). I opted to keep it over the HKL as it does look dramatically better. I don't want the HK box set. HKL's Iron Monkey is much better.

The same goes for Royal Warriors but that's never been released in Hong Kong.

I wish even more JS would release Police Story 3 outside of a box set. It's the only keeper of the 3 films and I've had to make do with a Dual Layer DVD-Rip. I'd buy it if I could.

Once Upon a Time in China Trilogy - The only one I have from your list. It's dramatically better than the HKL versions in the PQ department and also has a choice of Mono or DD5.1/DTS. The 5.1 soundtracks are much more loud and over the top to the DD5.1 on the HKL.

I've only watched parts of all three on the FS box set so I cannot say if any of the soundtracks go out of sync but I tested them all and they sounded fine to me.

I didn't use to like HKL's DD5.1 soundtracks thinking they were basically Stereo. I still think the same but now think they're the best way to do 5.1 remixes. Obviously include Mono/Stereo too but when it comes to 5.1 remixes restrained is better. The FS ones are often way too over the top, especially the DTS on the OUATIC Trilogy.

Obviously both are considerably better than the disaster that is the Columbia Tristar R1 versions. Sony really should re-release those.

Great about Joy Sales/Fortune Star's OUATIC Trilogy. I used to own the R1 Columbia Tristar and I'm damn glad I sold it off many years ago. As I've posted way earlier, I mentioned my preference for the original audio but I just pipe it through my receiver with the DTS Neo 6 setting on. I'll be upgrading my speakers next as I've had them since 2000. Did the IVL version have an interlaced or progressive transfer? I've read on different sites possibly the Joy Sales has progressive.
I am getting quite impatient waiting for a Digitally Remastered Lucky Stars Trilogy set from them though.
I still have yet to see In the Line of Duty 4 and Royal Warriors though.

I've never read of the Mono on OUATIC Trilogy going out of sync. I understand it's one of their best box sets.

To clarify I'm talking about the IVL not JS box set. I've no idea if it's any different.
I still have yet to see In the Line of Duty 4 and Royal Warriors though.
I've not checked out my Royal Warriors either but ITLOD4 looks great. Personally the DD5.1 didn't really bother me but I'd have preferred the choice. The DTS is even more pointless.

I used to own Fox's HK 1941, the PQ was excellent.

I'm gonna sell off the FOX HK 1941 and buy the Joy Sales release. Rather own the Joy Sales compared to not having original audio and actual subtitles.
Looks like I should also wait for The Magnificent Butcher, Magnificent Warriors, Heart of Dragon and My Lucky Stars from Joy Sales. Damn dubtitles and remixes. I could track down the IVL/Fortune Star release of The Magnificent Butcher from the Sammo Hung Action Collection.
I've said it once and I'll say it again... Bring on Winners & Sinners, My Lucky Stars and Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars as a Digitally Remastered boxset!
Also from the IVL line, I'm considering buying the DR Aces Go Places boxset.

Any other releases from Spectrum (HK) and Universal (JPN) Fortune Star lines which haven't already been released by Joy Sales?

More to get an idea as to what to expect for the line-up. I also know IVL had a Fearless Hyena boxset, a Donnie Yen boxset with Iron Monkey and In the Line of Duty 4, a Hui Brothers boxset, an A Better Tomorrow Trilogy boxset and an A Chinese Ghost Story Trilogy boxset.
I'm back AGAIN.

I'm already going to buy their Twin Dragons remastered DVD and the Joy Sales/Fortune Star remastered DVD of Crime Story in the near future. 8)
Compared to other choices for English viewers, it's currently the preferred version of 'Twin Dragons'. However, it has not been remastered - it also features an incompetently converted transfer from a PAL beta source. It's not a pretty image, but it's certainly not the worst either.

To simplify: the mono (allegedly tweaked a little) soundtrack and improved subtitles are included. Other DVDs have better advantages with regards to image :).

Their Crime Story DVD is apparently very good, the Dragon Dynasty DVD has a few more extras, but the image is inferior.

Is there a capture comparison for this? I'd love to see one. If someone could add DD captures for the JS vs. HKL comparison here that would be great:

I'd like to see how inferior it actually is.

I'm gonna buy the DD of Crime Story for the commentary. I already own the Joy Sales one. Haven't gotten around to watching it fully yet though. Glad I own an Oppo 971H. Gonna eventually upgrade to a 981H. Whichever one has the DCDi Faroudja (sp?) chip. Glad the Joy Sales kept the original blue tinting and didn't pinkify.
Twin Dragons is part of their DVD5 Anamorphic Legendary Collection. Too much edge enhancement and it looks like the colours have been fuddled with.
Does anyone know where I can find out what's different between the ratings II, IIa and IIb? Thanks.

Is this any good? -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong_ ... ing_system

It doesn't exactly look clear to me.

Or even bigger:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_pic ... ing_system

Crikey Thailand didn't even have a rating system until December 2007.

I still say the UK rating system makes the most sense and is the most clear, next would be Australia which appears to be almost identical but with slightly less clear names for the ratings.

You cannot beat a number meaning the year of admission for simplicity. The less said about the mess that is the USA system the better.
