There's nothing superior about PAL, and I wish yall would stop saying so. Yes, it does have a scant few more scanlines (20% more than NTSC) but that doesn't make it superior (and less so when we talk about anamorphically enhanced dvds)... as long as there's all these other flaws introduce in the PAL system like sped up video and pitch changed audio.

PAL ruined FoTR for me, it ruined ANH, and several other movies.

Even on my 106" screen the resolution difference in PAL vs NTSC is not enough to allow me to enjoy sped up and pitch corrected (or worse, un-corrected) sound over proper 24 fps NTSC film material.
</rant>

That said, a decent release of BR will be great. Especially if we get the international cut in decent quality as that was the one I first got to view and it still has a special place in me'heart. The links Eva posted to however seems to only contain one picture now... apparently someone decided to remove them so as not bog down everyone's viewing pleasure? I thought internet had progressed beyond that... but I keep forgetting all these americans using dial-ups still (last I checked, my online time would cost me lot's more of dial-up than a decent cable/dsl subscription would... :D)
So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Your rant is falling on deaf ears, I don't give a shit. I've rarely ever noticed PAL speed-up and that's only if I know a film exceptionally well, like T2 (went from R4 UE to R1 UE - noticed the slower sound right away).
and I wish yall would stop saying so
Don't dictate what I can and can't say, I'll say whatever I damn well please.

I've watched countless DVDs in both 480p and 576p, the latter (576p) looks superior to my eye; and I'm only watching on 32" CRT.

I'll stick with PAL for Blade Runner as well, I know that film fairly well and the NTSC slow-down that I've only ever seen in PAL might be jarring.
but I keep forgetting all these americans using dial-ups still (last I checked, my online time would cost me lot's more of dial-up than a decent cable/dsl subscription would... :D)
Yeah, yanks are pretty slow on the up-take when it comes to "globalised" technologies. Multisystem TVs and multiregion DVD players have only started to become fairly common in the States quite recently.

Ah fuck it! *Orders remastered R1 92 DC* I adore Blade Runner, I can't wait a month for the R2.

£6.99 from Cd-wow, bargain.

BTW it only has a DD2.0 track, not that that bothers me.

Variety is the entertainment industry magazine who originally broke the story, Tardis.

Thanks for the news Eva. That is good to see, not that I'm surprised. Post what you think when your DVD arrives.

You're mistaken.

Sure they're not bothered about regional coding (but considering the percentage of people who actually import is so low and the population of America is so big I'm not surprised most don't care) but they're definitely up with the latest technologies otherwise, generally speaking.

Such as Broadband, mobile technologies (for example GPRS) and the like.

20% is a lot.

All I know is:

1. The amount of people who bitch about PAL speed up is vastly higher than those who praise PAL's higher scanlines (i.e - there is a lot more PAL bashing than NTSC).
2. Of a DVD from the same studio and especially from a new film PAL almost always looks more vibrant and crisper.

That's not to say NTSC is bad, far from it but I do agree with Eva when he says PAL "overall" looks better. As for PAL speed-up I've yet to spot it so don't give a shit.

Bill Hunt of Thedigitalbits wrote:The audio has also been somewhat improved. Like this new release, the original DVD offered a Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround mix, but that's where the similarity ends. The original mix has a harsh, even sharp-sounding quality about it. The new 2.0 Surround track is much smoother and more natural, creating a more enveloping soundfield. There's greater LFE support as well, which enhances the audio experience significantly. A full 5.1 track this certainly isn't, but like the picture, the audio experience has definitely improved with this new release.
LFE on a 2.0 track? Riiiiggghhtt, whatever you say Bill.

Great cover art Eva. That's funny 2.1 :D , actually that is possible but I've never seen a DVD to get it. I suspect it's just a better 2.0 mix and his amp is adding the .1.

Oh I didn't realise a Work print was being included too, that's two new cuts for me to enjoy.

What does "and potentially the 52 min" mean though???

Erm, listen... LFE is Low-Frequency Effects. There's nothing that says this has to be kept in a discrete channel. 2.0 can have LFE - and I bet all your music cd's have LFE embedded in the stereo soundtrack. ;) Note that neither Bill Hunt or I mention LFE channel anywhere. This is almost like saying you can't have surround from a 2.0 track ;) (and if you say that you really show your age... :D)

And Eva, I said wish. Not demand. Nor coherce... and if you are so deaf what'd you need all them fancy headphones for anyways? :D

Besides 25 fps speed up is not only notable audibly, but visually aswell... especially noticeable in Asian Martial Arts flick that already has been undercranked... like say I bet every single Jet Li and Jackie Chan flick? :D Further sped up this can look real comical on PAL.

I'm just so glad that the rest of the world as followed up on a little dream of mine, there's no such thing as NTSC or PAL on HD discs :D They're in native 1080p/24 leaving it up to the display equipment to properly present it... (that's for filmed material transfered correctly of course... TV is something else :-/)

As for BR, EzyDVD apparently had a pre-order or something up with some specs - but it's been pulled now. I noticed it off of The Digital Bits which now say;
thedigitalbits wrote: Consider this a rumor, but those of you interested in a possible sneak peek at some of what's in store for you in Warner's Blade Runner: Ultimate Collection (due later this year on DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-ray) might want to head over to this link at the Australian DVD retail site, ezydvd.com. IF it's the real deal, fans of the film can look forward to Ridley Scott's all-new 2007 cut of the film, along with every previous version of the film plus the infamous work print version too. There's also the 2000 Channel Four documentary on the making of the film, On the Edge of Blade Runner, as well as an all-new documentary and much more. Warner's mum on all this right now, but they'll likely announce the title officially sometime in the next couple of months. If any of this IS real, it looks like they're cooking up a damn nice package. We'll post more here when there's official news.
So long, and thanks for all the fish!

I've got to admit, Eva's comments about LFE on DD2.0 are just about the dumbest I've heard in a long time, gave me a good laugh! Of course you can have LFE on a stereo track, the fucking thing originated on Dolby Stereo!

To add my two cents to the PAL/NTSC debate, I've seen VERY BAD NTSC transfer - mostly from pre-DVD era masters - where the picture is very jerky (at times appearing in slow motion). But at its best, the difference is barely noticeable. I've never really noticed the audio differance between the two but I'm not dismissing it's there

The great thing about HD is the idea of a universal format - were it not for the format war, I'd be preparing to get a player and discs of certain films

And back on topic . . .

No worries. I sooo can't wait for this. Blade Runner: DC is a masterpiece. It will be really interesting to see how Scott can improve upon it.

p.s - Since when did not knowing something immediately make you dumb?

Oh man I can't wait for this. I'll be pre-ordering it no matter how much it costs. I'll probably end up getting a HD version now.

That trailer is horrid. Nothing to do with the film, makes it seems like some BS actioner.

Three versions on one disc? They better get their seamless branching right.

Looks good otherwise, although I couldn't care less about the new cut.

Out in December? I'll have an HDMI 360 + the HD-DVD addon by then. Fuck the DVDs.
