I'm looking for cheap deals on Batman (1989) and Constantine if anyone sees them

Constantine you could probably get for £7 at the moment (The Hut with their next 10% off voucher and Quidco would get it down), but it does pop down lower than that once in a while I am sure I have seen it down as low as £6 a while back, so it does juggle its price a bit.

I love this film so much. I'd just turned 12 when it came out - one of the first few films to get that cert.

I used to really like it but last time I watched it I thought 'wow, that was disappointing'.

Great opening half hour, but as soon as Jack becomes 'Joker' film goes rapidly downhill.

I thought the opposite actually. Starts great then climbs to a tremendous finale

I agreed with Lucky Stars. The Joker is very good but sadly it's not dated too well and does come across as camp. I still like it though and own the DVD.

Rather than dated I'd say charming, and fun not camp

I watched it (Batman) last night on Blu-ray for the first time in years and enjoyed it more than ever. As a kid I always preferred Batman Forever, but now I can fully appreciate the Tim Burton ones and it's a shame he never made a third.

Totally agree. I've seen the film hundreds of times on VHS - so many times in fact I couldn't enjoy it any more, as I said before I was 12 when the film came out and was more than taken with it. Watching it for the first time in years brought it all back. Interestingly (for me at least) I noticed how nicely the shots were staged from an acting perspective, and that you would never see that now (I could liked it to a Kubrick film). And some very dynamic shots too - lots of energy. The film is a work of art from a production point of view, and as an adult film buff I had seriously underrated it as one of Burtons best. I now consider it as good as Ed Wood. I also thought that filming style was highly complimented by the editing, which made the whole thing work so well. Nice that the 80's were closed by such a terrific year for movies..maybe I'll start a 1989 thread

Btw I looked later at the film was edited by a screen legend from the Kubrick era, Ray Lovejoy. Funny that http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0522487/

Definitely, I followed it up with a viewing of Batman Returns on Blu-ray last night and the same goes for that too.

P.S. I only now see what a perv the Penguin was haha!

Just some Noise reduction applied to that Skynet one it may well pee on the old Lionsgate one, I forget now it seems ages since I gave up on that film and just got the origanal best UK release

TBH they're all poor:

1. Original Lionsgate USA BD: MPEG2 transfer with BD25 means it's squeezed on the disc to fit. Annoyingly I've never managed to find a proper comparison review but all the reviews of the disc, I've read make it sound pretty poor. Most are also really old reviews, which also needs to be taken into context.
2. Studio Canal BD: Which comprises the 2 Disc French BD, German HD-DVD and UK HD-DVD/BD: Dull and lifeless colours, muddy picture but it is the sharpest of the releases, actually I'm not sure if it's sharper than the Original Lionsgate BD but I'm willing to be it is.
3. Latest Lionsgate/Optimum BD (i.e - Skynet): Much better colours, no longer a muddy picture but it is definitely softer. Why they did this, is anyone's guess (DNR maybe as Romero points out, it's no Predator DNR job!). It's also the only version to contain all the different cuts and all the extras. The original Studio Canal French BD only has the Theatrical and Extended Cuts (on separate discs) but I'm sure has forced French subs somewhere in the release.

Romero says number 2 (Studio Canal BD) is the best release (I think he's solely going on captures? And is happy with the Extended Cut). I've owned the German HD-DVD, Lionsgate Skynet Edition and now Optimum Skynet Editon. I can tell you the Lionsgate and Optimum Skynet Editons are identical discs (save for subs) and for me number 3 (Skynet) has the better colours + crucially all cuts outweighed the softer picture of number 2 (which only has the Extended Cut).

I wasn't particularly pleased with either disc to be honest. No release is great, both the Skynet and Studio Canal BD have their faults but crucially both discs easily beat the R1 UE DVD, which was the only DVD I owned.

Mark: there is enough evidence to suggest the Skynet edition is better than the Original Lionsgate USA BD and the Skynet edition is now cheap, so give it a try and eBay if you need to. You're going to struggle to find a definitive answer to your question. You do like the theatrical cut best which disqualifies the Studio Canal BD (number 2) anyway.

I might take another look at my disc and see if it's acceptable. If it is then I can wait until a definitive release comes out. And given the way Lionsgate milk their catalogue I'm sure it'll be re-released in no time.
