Thanks!! Ordered that. 5 quid is worth a punt - the print may be robbed entirely of natural grain (and possibly lacking in some detail as a result) but I just want to give that HD audio a boooooooooooommmmmmmmm on my system

From comparisons there's obviously been some DNR applied (despite what Lionsgate say) but it's not as bad as Fox's Predator travesty. People don't look like wax or anything - it's just a smidgen of fine detail has gone. How blatant this is in motion may depend on your sensitivity to it. Wrong - no question - but for a fiver an acceptable 'punt' (as you say). I have the old Lionsgate release. If I could do caps I would but no Blu drive on my PC.

Yeah too my understanding the old Blu-Ray only has standard 5.1 audio. Not worth the upgrade for me.

The original BD had DTS-HD MA and the new Skynet BD still does. I think it was DTS-HD HR on the original UK BD (I could be wrong) though but it's never been DD5.1 or Legacy DTS (except the original USA BD which was DD5.1/DTS and very much a different release). Unless you happen to have an Amp that supports Lossless Audio, it matters not if it's DTS-HD MA or HR, both you're gonna get 1.5Mbps Legacy DTS.

It's the extras and multiple cuts that make it worthwhile upgrading (multiple cuts for me). The picture quality is poor on both old and new releases. I prefer it on the new BD, most don't but frankly it's poor on any release.

If you want the multiple cuts (like me), it's well worth a fiver.

Exactly. It's certainly not anywhere in the same league as the Predator BD. The original (Studio Canal sourced) UK BD doesn't have the DNR problems but has problems of it it's own. I've owned both and IMO the problems cancel each other out.

Ah my mistake on the HD audio. Maybe I'll rent the older Optimum BD to compare the 2 on my system. Have looked online but I can't for the life of me find a direct screen comparison of the 2 UK Blu-Ray releases.

I'll wait for James Cameron to remaster it.

Yeah my DVD will be fine for me if I feel like watching it (haven't in aaaaaages). Haven't heard anything about why he hasn't yet remastered it, but I'm sure he will do (maybe next year for 20th anniversary?)

There are two Masters as far as I know: Studio Canal and Lionsgate.

The original USA Lionsgate BD and all Skynet editions should be roughly the same, except the original USA BD was MPEG2 (so possible compression problems but it's a guess) and the Skynet editions have had some DNR applied. The Studio Canal Master was used for the French HD-DVD (2 Disc, both cuts), it was also used on the original UK Optimum BD and German Kinowelt HD-DVD. There were rumours the German HD-DVD had been tweaked but by all accounts it's minimal or not at all.

So basically check out any Lionsgate BD or Studio Canal sourced HD-DVD/BD for comparisons. This is obviously not an exact science but it gives a rough idea.

Alternatively, like you say rent it. I owned the German Kinowelt HD-DVD (just the Extended Cut) and now own the UK Optimum Skynet BD (I wanted both cuts). I also owned the USA Lionsgate BD for awhile and unsurprisingly it's 100% identical to the UK Optimum Skynet BD.

No worries. It's hard to explain, when there are so many different releases and no f'ing definitive one .

Contains both the theatrical cut and the extended version.
