Doom Extended Cut 2/5

Pretty disappointing stuff. I'd have prefered it to have been based on the original two Doom games, but instead, it's based on the third. I didn't like:

The BFG. It was such an anticlimax and both shots were wasted. No one was actually killed as a result of the BFG.


Also it was too dark, I couldn't make anything out. The FPS section was cool but the whole structure of the film sucked... even for a mindless action flick.

Andrzej Bartkowiak is not looking good... I hated Cradle 2 the Grave and Doom wasn't too hot. I've got Romeo Must Die to sit through now...

Silent Hill 4.5/5

Absolutely incredible. I know nothing about the games but it is remarkably entertaining as a stand alone movie. Wonderfully written, acted and directed, it'd be difficult to imagine that such a mature, powerful drama could have originated from a video game. But then, we do have Christophe Gans and Roger Avary on board.

It does not rely on cheap jumps but proper consistant eerie atmosphere. It's more on par with stuff like Session 9, the Machinist and the Shining. There's a lot of disturbing imagery, contrasted by some beautiful gothic set pieces.

Original cut ran at 3 hours, but the studios forced Christophe Gans to cut it down. It's fine as it is just now but it'd be interesting to see what was cut out.

I want to play the games now.

The Sword 4.5/5

One of the most atmospheric and immersing swordplay movies ever, from debut director Patrick Tam. It's got its stock plot to build the subdued atmosphere on, a totally haunting and beautiful score (some of which sound very Jarre...) and Tam adds some truly thought out cinematic ideas, considering the genre. Icing on the cake is Ching Siu-Tung's fast and fluid choreography. Finally this film also has a respectable transfer to go with it, thanks to HK Video.

Lone Wolf and Cub: Babycart in Peril (No 4?) - 3/5

Thought this was OK, but not as entertaining as the others. It was good to see more of the film from Daigoro's perspective, and how he reacts to his dad being a killer/assassin and how he copes with it.

Slither 4/5

I thought this was awesome. It's not particular scary, more "icky", but I haven't watched such a fun filled 90 something minutes for a while. Slither doesn't take itself seriously at all, and is all the better for it. The perenially underated Michael Rooker manages to elicit sympathy from a unappealing character, whilst at the same time having a lot of fun looking like a cross between The Fly and the shit monster Chet from Weird Science. Nathan Fillion (Preacher from Buffy and the fella in Serenity) and the scene stealing Greg Henry don't let anyone down either.

I was gonna give this one a miss but I tend to agree with your taste in films. Are there a lot of jump scenes? I hate getting scared at the cinema.

Election

Watched it two times, once yesterday and once today in the morning. Actually I had expected the movie quite different, and was a bit disappointed.
Overall it´s definitly a good movie, which I liked better when I when I watched it the second time. (Leung Ka-fai´s role was a nice one...) But one thing´s for sure: To has made a lot of movies that were better than this one, which didn´t win so many awards - that´s sad, because it also shows that there aren´t many good movies made in HK at the time...

Where a good man goes

Another To-movie. Didn´t expect it was so good, because I hadn´t heard much about it. Lau Ching Wan´s and Ruby Wong´s acting was very good, just as Lam Suet´s. He plays a cop in this one.

Rumour has it that Patrick Yau was set to direct this one but unlike his prior two credited films (Longest Nite, Expect The Unexpected), Johnnie To didn't ghost-direct a lot of Where A Good Man Goes. He replaced Yau altogether and except a brief comback vehicle for Chinastar called Loser's Club, we haven't seen much of the talent that first gave us The Odd One Dies. That being the only credited film of his that does seem to have his own touch.

Well, since The Odd One Dies is easily the worst of those, I'd say his absence is a good thing. 8)

No, not really. I didn't shit myself. It's more gross rather than having a lot of jump scenes. I don't like jump scenes in the cinema either. Makes me look like a pussy and i gotta a rep to protect.

BTW are there a lot of jump scenes in Silent Hill as I might check that out?

The Hills Have Eyes (2005/6) 2.5/5

I was really disappointed with this, and feel that Alexandro Aja (Switchblade Romance) has taken a step backwards with this remake of Wes Craven's average horror. It's a complete rehash of the original with a bit more gore, but I didn't find it scary or unsettling. I've found some people have been comparing this with Hostel (in terms of recent horror films), and If I were to do that, I'd go for the latter every time.

Haha nice one Bruce, I'll check out Slither next.

The fear in Silent Hill is very cerebral. There are no jump scenes as such but the music is so nicely done that it maintains a consistent cold atmosphere. You probably won't be jumping, but you may be clutching the person next to you throughout the film.

It's a better film than say... Brokeback Mountain.

I loved the remake and cannot wait to see the uncut version with all the gore and nasty stuff back in, and think the origanal is easily one of the single worst films ever made that I have ever seen pure bile from begining to end.

Excellent satire/comedy/drama from Lu Xuechang (The Making Of Steel). Suitably low-key, felt, structured like a Hollywood ticking clock movie and with a perfect central performance from Ge You.

wanted something mindless to watch that didnt require too much effort. i love gymnastics anyway, and it was just kinda fun to watch, lacking in some places but the gymnastics made up for it...

I loved Bring it on for what it was myeself midless fun with plenty to see and hear.

yeah its just a fun movie, without being stupid and ridiculous. its a nice break from more serious movies.

I dont have any interest in the sequal mind you no name casts and a straight to dvd release dont appeal much to me It wouldnt be the same without the same girls and boys.

theres a sequel? lol, maybe i will check that out sometime, although in experience sequals rarely live up to the first movie, with a few exceptions.
