Took a gander at my existing R2 007 collection last night and noticed that From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, You Only Live Twice and OHMSS were all original mono sound. No 5.1 remixes. I just assumed that the MGM discs always had remixes and that they'd been ported over to the new set. It looks as though the Sony remixes are new - and that's worrying. Even less reason to "upgrade" now. I never bought Dr. No (which I thought was dated, lacking the flair and excitement of subsequent entries) so don't really care too much about it. There's a new review for Dr. No up at DVD Times and the Sony image is much improved. If remixes don't bother you then it's probably worth double-dipping. I'm considering whether to wait and see what Region 1 produces. Surely the Americans won't accept no mono tracks? This is such a fudge isn't it?

Bloody hell Mark, you honestly thought the old DVD's of those films had a 5.1 Remix?

You not read the back cover of them?
While I do agree its annoying that the original Mono/Stereo tracks are not included, there are so many other films that have this issue too so its not just isolated to just Bond

It depends how good the remixes are whether I upgrade the older films or not then

I just assumed as MGM always seem to do remixes in the UK. Oddly enough of the 60's films I have only Thunderball is a 5.1 remix - and unsurprisingly doesn't sound quite as good as the mono tracks - but isn't bad. Seems crazy to replace original mono with forced remixes. It honestly never occured to me during all this recent talk.

Regarding the two DVD Times reviews to be fair (and accurate) they do say the 5.1 remixes are subtle and respectful with no out of place bangs and whooshes.
Why did you neglect to mention that Mark? Hmmm. Didn't you say you don't mind remixes on Western films? Double Hmmm.

Personally I'd upgrade those two if I wanted them.

Which is a relief, but not really the point. The fact is: the previous DVDs had mono so there's no excuse not to include it now. I mean does anyone honestly need DTS for Goldfinger??

Because I assumed you would go read the review rather than me summerize it for you.

I don't mind if they're done well, but don't confuse that with preference to mono. If mono was available I'd choose that. Especially on films from the early 60's which sound off with seperation and enhanced foley. Luckily not a problem here if DVD Times are accurate.

Mark, about mono tracks - didn't Eva say that -
Update: It is now confirmed that the 5.1 remastering work will only be included for "Thunderball" to "The Man With The Golden Gun" inclusive.
Why start at Thinderball and end TMWTGG?
I may get some Roger Moores as well.

I think the main remastering work in to 5.1 is for those films because from TSWLM onwards already had 5.1 remixes, well Octopussy being an exception.
From what I hear the existing 5.1 tracks either have been remixed or they are totally new remixes which i highly doubt.

The reviews up at DVD Times aren't exactly overwhelmingly positive. Hell, the reviewer prefers the old image for A View to a Kill to the new one. Would love to hear those Roger Moore commentaries though.

Sorry if missed something, but are these 5.1 tracks the original sound effects spread into 5.1, or some stupid remix with newly recorded sound effects?
I'm only interested in some Connery films (You Only Live Twice, From Russia With Love...)

I think they're newly record remixes Hung, but they don't go OTT with new sound effects

Well I've bit the bullet and bought the new collection too via HMV and there nice little Discount code from a while back,
The case looks fantastic and feels solidly built unlike the last flimsy Tin, also all 20 of the discs inside are individually sealed so its not obvious you've bought it with the Attache case. looks great and its so tempting not to open it up
Only checked out one of my personal favourites so far "For Your Eyes Only" and I can say the picture is sharper and detailed most noticably in the close range shots and the colours are more natural and bolder when they have to be, as far as MPG compression goes it is far better.
Not sure if you'd notice the difference right away though, but the Print is immaculate and no signs of flecks of dirt in the new print thanks to the restoration process.
Only 1 or 2 caps for now, dont rely on me soley for my views

I'm waiting for the reviews of the R1 UEs, they might actually have the original theatrical burnt-in captions and mono tracks. They have to be out in time for Casino Royale, I'm guessing that the Bond franchise was one of the key reasons why Sony bought MGM in the first place (aside from having a bigger catalogue to back blu-ray).

Hey, MLAM, if you get time can you do proper comparisons for more 007 films. According to an Australian site the new Goldeneye is inferior. So this would be a great one to start with. I have the R1 Special Edition of that film if it's needed. Oh, and best to put them into seperate threads in the comparisons forum for easy finding.

I'll probably be busy watching all of these over the coming weeks

, oh and other stuff too in life
But I'm certain that I'll be doing the odd comparison here and there I think.
Goldeneye will be noted as Priority seeing as it seems to be popular in here
Mark, I think the R1 maybe useful for comparing the burnt on captions against the generated ones.

Okely dokely,
I'm guessing you'll use the reference points mentioned on the R4 review on MichaelDVD?
Saw another review for the new Goldeneye DVD:

Those PAL running times given won't compare to the NTSC ones I have so I'll just choose the caps at random as usual.
Regarding other films: can you find out if the others are actually uncut? It seems Licence to Kill is, but none of the others have had their cuts restored. If you want to know what the cuts are I can give you a list.

OK, I've added the R1 caps. All are taken from within the first 15 mins so should be easy enough to find.
EDIT: I'll do Tomorrow Never Dies R1 SE tomorrow.

Yeah, most Hollywood remixes are like that, which is good. Exceptions include Vertigo, Jaws and The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

Review of Licence to Kill up at DVD Times. Ultimate Edition has been cropped slightly but otherwise looks generally better. The first cap they show is better on the SE, but the second is better on the UE. So new print is hardly a revelation. Still it's uncut which is what we were hoping.

He did but that's long since old news. I'd take a proper review over user comments any day.
grim_tales wrote:I think they're newly record remixes Hung, but they don't go OTT with new sound effects

There are no new sound effects. I'm sure that wouldn't been mentioned by now. They're all newly recorded but are probably remixes instead of starting from scratch.
The well written DVD Times reviews are coming thick and fast. Odd they're not releasing them in order though.
Markgway wrote:Still it's uncut which is what we were hoping.
Which oddly isn't mentioned in the review.
