Bond's position changes (he's no longer obviously holding the film), and there's a jump in the theme song. A subsequent line, "What a performance!" is missing from all known prints. Come dude, we know that they'll highly likely to be 100% identical to the R2 UEs. Sony are lazy & highly predictable, they'll probably just dual-encode the R2 & R4 discs like they have in the past.

Maybe the R1's have the original theatrical burnt in subs.

Dr. No: In the original cut of the film Bond shot the traitorous Professor Dent six times. Director Terence Young decided that this was a little excessive, so trimmed the scene. In all extant versions of the film, including the new Ultimate Edition version, Bond only shoots twice ([56'09"]

That cut was ordered by the BBFC.

A substantial amount of the bonus material that was on the original R2 DVD, released in 2003, is missing from this so-called "Ultimate" edition, including the seventy-five minute documentary Inside Die Another Day; several other short featurettes; Madonna's Die Another Day video (and its Making of... featurette); and the theatrical trailers - all gone. The new material: Just Another Day (23m), A British Touch - Bond Returns To London (4m) and Location Scouting With Peter Lamont (14m), don't nearly make up for the omissions.

Sorry Mark but it sounds like A View To A Kill may still be edited by the BBFC (though one extra on the DVD makes the DVD a 12). It doesn't say "Previous cuts waived" under any listing for the film.

As for Goldeneye/TND, at Play it says "uncut on DVD for the first time", not "UK DVD", I'll wait for confirmation though.

Yeah, I figure MGM/Sony haven't put in quite as much effort to restore these films are I'd first hoped. Seems none of the films before Licence to Kill have had their cuts restored. What a waste - as we'll never see these redone from the uncut film prints.

So it's only the Brosnon Bonds that are likely to be uncut?

Possibly...? We don't know yet. Every knob who has actually seen them hasn't bothered to say so. DVD Times have just stopped coverage after Thunderball. Asses. We'll know by next week though. I'm gonna buy Licence to Kill to be sure.

Soon I'll trade in my old Connery discs.

It really, really, really pisses me off when that happens.

I'm more than likely upgraded the first 3 Brosnan Bonds at some point but I'm no longer in any rush, unless the AV turns out to be a big step up (which I doubt).

I hope we get comparison reviews of all or most of the DVDs. It also really annoys me when it's obvious a DVD needs a comparison but no one bothers.

I asked DVD Compare/Rewind about Goldeneye etc but they havent compared them yet.

Sorry to put a dampner on things but it appears the "uncut" versions we're getting in the UK are the "PG-13" US editions (ie probably what most of us already have). For Goldeneye it says:

"This version of the film is uncut, the same that was included in the Special Edition"

and for TND the censorship page only mentions things like Yeoh taking a throwing star from her shoe etc being restored.

Interesting the BBFC thought the extra footage warranted a "15" even today.

Bah. I'll still get LTK though.

Only you and Mark ever expected otherwise . Personally that's all I was expecting so no dampner for me.

Thanks for the review btw but I'll wait for proper comparison reviews. Those reviews only skim the surface.

It's a bit of a toss up whether or not an upgrade to this new version (from the SE) would be advisable as the video quality seems to have gone backwards in some areas...

The video quality is disappointing considering the excellent reviews given to previous versions

The sharpness, however, was somewhat variable with the occasional scene such as the one around 44:00 featuring M and Bond having an argument being a little soft and showing some grain and even mild macro-blocking in backgrounds.

The main problem I have with this transfer is the introduction of quite noticeable aliasing and jagged edges which occur regularly. Most occurrences are mild, however considering that this was not present on previous versions of this film (based on the previous reviews) this is quite disappointing.
