Nah get the R4. It has DTS and some extras, it was released on the 20th of July.

I don't believe the R1 is all that great.

I've heard the CE is the same DVD except it's now dual layer to purely make room for DTS. The bitrate of the video I'm sure is identical.

I'd find the comparison review I read for you but I'm currently at work and our dumb proxy makes the web often fall over. I'm sure it was on www.dvddebate.com but I can't find it at the moment.

Is the Tartan release of 2046 film-PAL or NTSC-PAL?

From DVDTimes:

Tartan running time = 123 minutes.
French running time = 123 minutes.

Since the french disc is a pure-pristine-wonderful-ahemsorry PAL transfer, it's safe to assume that Tartan have done a fine job as well.

The Tartan website says its 129m and cd-wow says 124m.

Tartan's website lists Oldboy as having a runtime of 119m, but my back of my copy says 115m. I assume that Tartan list a film's actual running time and not that of any of their proper sped-up PAL transfers.

Personally I'm sticking with my HK DVD. It has longer/more extras to the UK R2 but doesn't have DTS (not enough reason alone to upgrade).

I'm still pissed the French DVD doesn't feature English subs

Thanks. I ordered the 2-disc HK LE in the end from Yesasia (needed another item to qualify for free shipping so I grabbed the MeiAh remaster of Full Alert).

Also ordered that R2 Chungking Express off cd-wow. Been wanting to see that for a few years now after I read about it some film book, hadn't heard of WKW at that point (he probably was mentioned in the book, but I can't remember).

That's the one I have. I'm waiting to see a comparison between it and the UK R2.

The Korean DVD is a clone from the HK DVD - same AV, same menus, same extras.

I got the Tartan Infernal Affairs 2 yesterday.

Haven't seen the film yet but did have a quick look at the deleted scenes. I'm confirming that all 3 deleted scenes DO have subs.

The guy who wrote the old dvddebate comparison review must've either had an incomplete check disc or he was stoned when wrote the review.

That said the deleted scenes vs. much better cover art gives it to the cover art for me 8)

What do the deleted scenes add, if anything?

According DVDBeaver, Tartan's recent releases of Shinya Tsukamoto's Vital (both R1 & R2UK) are excellent and sport NATIVE transfers for each of region's TV signal standard (PAL & NTSC) - no poor conversions.

That really is surprising.

I'd be very surprised if Tartan created a new PAL transfer from Film as it's something just don't do. I'm guessing it was sourced from a PAL transfer but then if both the PAL and NTSC look the same who knows???

Yeah, it's decent (i still rate it 3/5). Eraserhead is a film that grows on you with repeat viewings. I had similar experience with Blue Velvet - Thought it was ok on first viewing, loved it on the 2nd viewing (rate it 4.5/5 now).

Brad, have you seen The Straight Story and The Elephant Man? They're Lynch's "straightest" films, but also my favourites. They're so touching and emotionally endearing. I'm normally very cynical towards smaltzy sentimental films but Lynch does it in a way the result is totally cheese-free.

I don't, looks too pricey for a seemingly barebones disc. I'll wait for the Eastern Eye release, they no longer suck now. Pretty much all their releases since mid-2005 have been native PAL.

Cool cover art. Unless they give us lots of extras I doubt I'll bother though.

The HK DVD is already anamorphic with DD5.1 and VERY cheap too. I think I paid about £4 from CD WOW.
