Colour Blossoms is a profoundly mesmerising journey of human sensuality and spirituality. Director Yonfan explores the inner depths of love, lust, pleasure and pain in a manner that is neither crude nor perverse. The poetic camerawork, luminous cinematography and Surender Sodhi’s tranquilising soundtrack help create an enjoyable and thought provoking visual treat that is vastly different to conventional HK cinema. The DVD is easily accessible to Western audiences, providing English subtitles where required and a colossal DTS-ES soundtrack. If the viewer can ignore some of the more unintentionally comic and overly theatrical chapters then Colour Blossoms comes highly recommended.

I don't think this has been getting great reviews. I thought it was great myself, something very different.

Interesting review of what looks like an interesting film Bisc. It looks a bit like it could've been directed by Wong Kar Wai, right?

What is it that most reviewers didn't like?

I bet you had fun choosing the captures to include in your review

p.s - CD WOW stock the 3 disc version which has an extra OST CD. It's a little expensive though.

The film is very WKW in nature, but perhaps exaggerates his style a little too much. Having said that, the visuals are outstanding. Take a look at the fourth screen grab - the blue lighting on the stairs has been carefully placed to match the woman's dress. A fine example of the careful colour co-ordination.

I also absolutely adore the soundtrack. I would get the 3 disc version personally, but seeing as I own the 2 disc edition, I'll definitely be buying the CD later.

From what I gather, it is very easy to mock this film. It tackles mature, human emotions but displays them in a very forward manner, which will undoutedly get you giggling if you can't take it seriously. It depends on if you see this Colour Blossoms as art or tripe. The storyline is also not entirely straightforward so some of the scenes may be confusing.

I'll admit, the recited poetry was borderline cheese. However the underlying message of sacrificial love I felt was quite nicely handled.

Ok it's not nearly as deep as your typical WKW masterpiece but it was a valiant effort nonetheless.

Give it a try is my advice. I'm desparately seeking out more contemporary titles after the dreadful Twins Effect 2 (which still lingers in my memory). I might give Butterfly a chance (or more WKW movies).

You're right now you point it out that is impressive.

I got that feeling from reading other reviews. The fact is most people can't take erotic (if I can use that word?) films seriously. Either laughing at them or incorrectly labelling them porn.

I won't be buying it soon but will put it on my list to give a try. I'm trying not to buy many DVDs at the moment as my DVD cabinet is chocker full.
