The R1 video is clearly better, it has a commentary and the subtitles have a better translation and aren't burnt in as they are on the BFI. The audio has less hiss but it isn't quite as good as the BFI's.
Buy the Criterion.

Agreed. Yuck, that R2 has really been manipulated.

Criterion by a mile. Contrast is a bit high on the BFI and there's been a loss detail from thanks to use of noise removal filters.
Fucking noise reduction, needs to die in a fire.

Neither of you should comment on AV. The BFI video shows a distinct lack of attention along with a lack of bitrate.

Why shouldn't we comment on the AV?
The R1 has two different translations, one Shakesperian, one literal (?)

Again R2FR isn't worth it. Too bright and ugly and sharpened to death.
