I'm guessing Duel To The Death

I must say I don't bother with commentaries much these days

I tend to watch/listen to about 20-30 minutes of extras after a film on average. I pick which extras look the most interesting.

Thanks a lot for the info Ricky.

I was thinking about buying the DD Dog Bite Dog disc for the commentary.
Guess there's no point, now.

I made the same mistake with Kung-Fu Hustle.
Upgraded to the R1US for the commentary, only to find it was out of sync by about ten seconds.
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Out of sync or in sync it's still a commentary.

It can be annoying when the commentator is referring to something that's already happened or hasn't yet happened....

True but it's not like most commentaries are scene specific anyway. Many commentaries even work as an MP3.

I never watch the film when doing commentaries, its easy as long as you have seen the film before.

There is quite a bit of swearing on Edison's part. They may've tried to edit around it as the commentary does go dead here and there, something that hasn't happened on DD's other releases.

Was he upset at the criticisms of his acting ability? :D

Just wondering if anyone has done a side by side comparison between the R1 Dragon Dynasty releases and the R4 ones? A handful of titles have been released here in Australia. I've got a copy of My Young Auntie, but haven't had a chance to do a proper side-by-side, certainly from initial looks the video quality is improved, though it does only have the Mandarin soundtrack which is a bit annoying.

I though DD's Shaws looked a little odd, despite being from HD. Perhaps the HD transfers were taken from the PAL masters, so despite the corrected speed they still have a slight video look

Surely they'd be identical except in PAL? Otherwise the same AV (for the most part) and extras.

I'd imagine so but I've seen supposedly identical region DVDs where the region 1 had a ton of edge enhancment not on the Region 2

It's worth pointing out there are some slight interlacing glitches on the R1 King Boxer. My cousin's got the R4 on order so we'll see if the same problems are on that release

Indeed that's what I'm thinking, but I'm unsure whether they did a NTSC->PAL video conversion (awful), or they actually went back to the masters and created a PAL version from there.

If someone's got the running time of the NTSC version we can check I guess?

The PAL version runs for 1:54:18.

Great, that matches a 4% speedup then, looks like it was done properly...

Still a shame they didn't put the Cantonese soundtrack on the release though.

I'd be very surprised if they did this.

HKL have never pulled this cheap tricky. I'd be surprised if Brian White at DD would do it now.

I only noticed this once.

Otherwise it's a great disc.

Big interlacing problems on the '5 Fingers Of Death' trailer (ugly on a PAL60 CRT TV) and the subtitles can be awful (copied off IVL, and not even fixed up to improve fluency and sense).

However, it's still largely better than IVL's release.

Looked to me like they cribbed the trailer from some crummy tape. I downloaded a much better copy years ago

Seemed fine to me. I don't speak Mandarin so I've no idea how accurate they are. But I had no problems reading and understanding them. I recall no spelling or major grammatical errors. I think some people just complain for the sake of it.

I've got it Mark, you dare accuse me of complaining for the sake of it  ?

8)

Anyway, it's not really a matter of accuracy, they're copied off the IVL subtitles which have lack of punctuation, out-of-sync, bad grammar and not much on-screen text is subtitled. They just look bad.
