Japanese Exam

Post by grim_tales »

Some already know this but I had my Japanese speaking Exam (Entry Level) yesterday, think I did pretty well actually :D
I *may* have made a couple of mistakes but I'm sure I was allowed to correct them, (I was asked to "explain/repeat" a couple of things and changed word order the 2nd time) so I hope I did well :D

Congratulations man! How long have you been studying japanese now?
Did you find it easy to pick up, or very very hard? Do you feel you can understand japanse movies now, or are there still too many words you're not familiar with yet?

I started learning japanese at my internship, whenever I had nothing to do, but stopped cause I kept playing the same japanese sentences (sound-files; it was an internet course: japaneseonline.com I believe) and didnt want to disturb my collegues...

Don't think I can understand Japanese movies yet, I've only heard girls speak it really - Miyuki (our tutor), and a friendly girl named Tomomi :) Do girls have a dfferent "pitch" to guys? :)

I've watched 7 Samurai etc before some time ago and I couldn't understand anything :D It was too fast and I was like "Huh??? THIS is Japanese?" :D

I found it quite easy to pick up though I dont like Japanese letters and just used Romaji. :)
I've been doing it since January this year (I think) though I went on the Beginners course in 2002 :D

So is this a part time course in college Grim?

Well done anyways, you deserve it.

Hey - I'm not sure if Seven Samurai is a good film to recognise Japanese. My flatmate's girlfriend (who is Japanese) says that even she struggled to grasp what was going on because the Japanese was very old and difficult to understand.

I learnt a sprinkling of Japanese at Uni a few years back... but never kept it up. I've now forgotten all of it. :D

It's easier than Chinese and English that's for sure...

what level are you studying japanese grim? I have my reading/writing/listening GCSE exams a few weeks back. I know i flunked the reading exam as I did not learn enough kanji. Needed to learn 50 characters only knew a quater of that. my fault in know.

As for the question do girls have different pitch. I think so. Men seem to sound more forcefull in their speech while women sound softer and uber sexy. That last statement could all be just in my head though as I'm very biased towards japanese women accents :D

Since starting the course I can pick up the odd phrases and expressions which before just sounded jibberish. Also people dont seem to sound like they're talking really fast anymore either.

One of the best things I've found to help with word recognition is to download anime episodes from various fansubbers. Not only do you get to enjoy a quality show but your also guranteed to learn a few swear words right of the bat :)

BAKKAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!! :P

Anyway, not sure if girls have different pitches then men, as I only know 1 japanese person (a cute girl from school), but judging from movies I'd say there's a slight difference, but perhaps it's just girls being softer and sweeter, and guys being macho or whatever... (like wolf said)

Next week I have my last week internship, which will consists of basically doing FUCK ALL, so I'm sure I'll have some spare time to maybe continue my online japanese course ... :)

Maybe you're right Bisc.. at the moment I'm watching "Swing Girls" (2004), which is a fun, light hearted J-comedy so far (IMO), I can understand a few words of that :D "Bento" means lunch or packed lunch :)

I might get the results in August/September.. not sure.

Its' a PT course organisd by my college yeah, I think we should of watched some animé in class or something :D Would of been fun.
Wolf, its' just "Entry Level" or something like that which is supposed to be quite easy (!) You just do speaking, as long as I learnt set phrases ("Beppu made katamichi ichimai onegaisimasu". for example, means "A single ticket to Beppu please" :D )

We did some kanji which I found quite hard, fortunately in my exam I had THE easiest kanji to recognise - "deguchi"(Exit) :D

I know the meanings of some characters/words because of Sumo on TV when I was younger (and more recent). I know "Guchi" (written with the character for "Mouth")because one of my friends was called Izumi Yamaguchi :)

I think our tutor said that the college gets the exam results about a month from now or something, but we might not get them until August or September.
