If you rip the video and DD audio off the unsubtitled Thai DVD it almost fits on one layer anyway.

Exactly! Just because a film is on a single layer it doesn't mean it will be low quality.

The vast majority of dual layer discs are really just that because of dubs and extras. If you rip a dual layer film most of the time it only needs compressing by 10-15% if that.

That's not to say it doesn't help but it may not hinder either.

Yeah, but the Thai DVD wasnt all the great (good? yeah) in the AV department anyway, so I certainly wouldnt want THAT transfer -COMPRESSED!- ...
I already paid over 10 bucks for the movie, so it would be insane to spend that kinda money AGAIN on a version that's still not 'perfect', cause it wastes half the disc with a version I'll never watch anyway ... I aint giving them money for releasing a shitty version! They should just release the version we, or at least 90% of us, want.... which is the original thai version and nothing else.

Yi-Long no offence but why do you always constantly whine at what clearly isn't going to change. Fair enough have your say but Madman have read your comments over at their forum and decided to go ahead so clearly they disagree.

I imagine it's higher than 10% of people who want the Luc Besson cut! The point for me at least is the R4 is going to be the best version for people who need English subs + What other version are you going to buy?

You could get the cut R1, the altered (new score but uncut) UK R2, the non-English subbed HK R3, the non-English subbed Korean R3 or the non-English subbed Thai R3. All of which are dual layer though!

See my point!

Violent Cop R1 vs. UK R2 vs. R4 -

http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/show ... p?t=374116

The R4 looks much better and I hear Madman create new subs so those "should" be okay also.

p.s - Sorry Mark I can't post directly here as it's full of caps.

Asking for a NORMAL (=UNCUT) version to be released is whining!?
I think it's a pretty normal request...

I'm not going to do anything though... I'll keep my Thai DVD, which obviously won't be getting all that much play-time due to it not being subtitled, which is a huge shame ofcourse, but none of the other releases are worth spending money on, cause I aint interested in these alternate versions...
I'm sure many people will buy these cut/fucked up versions, mainly because many also dont even KNOW it's been changed...

I'll wait 10-15 years for a GOOD version, instead of giving my money, thus encouraging, to these companies for these practices... :)

My point merely being the DVD is now soon to be released it's pointless whining.

I agree what you ask for is normal but ultimately it's now futile.

Maybe... just maybe... the dutch release will be the uncut, thai version with original soundtrack... and subs... :)

Image

It's also 105 minutes (same as PAL thai DVD), so could be good news.

Fingers crossed. I actually bet based on past experience it will be.

What is odd is the Luc Besson IC is still in Thai. I'm surprised no dub was more wildly used.

p.s - How annoying an English dub but not subs

I agree about the dvd not having english subs is very annoying. I always hate it when another country releases a good DVD, and it doesnt have the rights to also use english subs... bastards.

Just look at all those brilliant dvds the french have gotten...

Fingers crossed this dutch release will be the right one :)
The release date was originally this week btw, but now it's been portponed till half august or something, so they might be planning a 2 disc special edition or something...

We also have a supposedly pretty good 3 disc Old Boy release here in Holland, but I havent bought it (yet?)

Taken from the Madman link above for "Bride with White Hair":

"Part 1 is anamorphic 2,35:1. Part 2 is only letterboxed 1,85:1"

 . I didn't expect non-anamorphic from Eastern Eye! It's cropped also. Does this make the R1 best for BWWH2 (2.35:1 non-anamorphic)?

R1 DVD is 1.85:1 too so good luck finding a better one.

I'm thinking it's meant to be shown at home in 1.85:1 as all DVDs seem to be these. IMDB says 2.35:1 but that doesn't mean it's meant that way at home.

Violent Cop R4 has been confirmed to have fine subtitles all the way through!

Same source as before. This easily beats the R1 and UK R2!

Are the Eastern Eye DVDs R4 only or are they R0 - like Siren's releases - or R2/4 combined like HKLs

Some releases are R0 (eg most of their Korean and HK releases from what I've seen) and others are R4 only (eg their Kurosawa library). Whether a title is R0 or R4 probably depends on the agreement with particular licensor.

Can anyone confirm whether Zatoichi Meets The One Armed Swordsman is R0?

Well, Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo is R4 only according to http://www.michaeldvd.com.au, so I wouldn't surprised if this is as well.

Eastern Eye have updated their website it's now much better designed:

www.easterneye.com.au auto-forwards to - http://www.madman.com.au/actions/channe ... hannelId=6

Madman now offer a newsletter. I've signed up to the Eastern Eye part:

http://www.madman.com.au/actions/mailin ... =subscribe

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay a proper update:

As always unless mentioned otherwise it is assumed/known (it could be to early to say) that each DVD is anamorphic with the original language.

I've added the three rental titles to the rental post on page 1 and removed the titles which are now retail.

The main purpose of this whole thread is to show what are the Eastern Eye titles actually worth buying with that in mind I've added the "decent" titles to the first post as usual, except for the obscure titles I don't know anything about. By all means let me know of titles I should add?

Retail:

Godzilla 2000 - 25/05/2005
Kurosawa Box- Samurai Classics - 25/05/2005
The Eye - 20/07/2005 (Documentary - Making of. , Director spotlight, Trailers + DTS)
The Samurai Trilogy 1- Musashi Miyamato - 15/06/2005
The Samurai Trilogy 2- Duel at Ichijoji Temple - 20/07/2005
The Samurai Trilogy 3 - Duel at Ganryu Island - 20/07/2005
Ong Bak - 24/08/2005 (See page 1)
Score 1 - 31/08/2005
Stray Dog - 31/08/2005 (Japanese DD1.0, Trailer + Photo Gallery)
Bangkok Dangerous - 21/09/2005
One Take Only - 21/09/2005 (Thai DD5.1 or DD2.0, Trailer)

Rental:

The Grudge 2 - 04/05/2005
Breaking News - 29/06/2005 (Making of, R4 Exclusive Q&A with Director Johnnie To, Stills Gallery + DTS)
Brotherhood of War - 28/09/2005 (No DTS mentioned!)

Titles to watch out for over the coming months:

* Ong-bak (This looks to be the best EE to date by quite some way)
* Breaking News (AFAIK no European company has this?)
* The Eye
* Bangkok Dangerous (Fingers crossed on 5.1)
* Brotherhood of War (No DTS mentioned though!)

All the details have been added to the first post/page except for 'Brotherhood of War' and 'Breaking News' of course.

Isn't "Brotherhood of War" Taeguki or a different movie? :?

Yes they're the same film. I believe Taeguki is Korean for Brotherhood just like Musa is Korean for Warrior.

Grim are you going to get any of these?

I asked CD WOW if they're going to stock "The Eye" as we just know they are the only e-tailor who would sell it cheap. They're not so I'm no longer interested (I don't want it enough to pay £10+).

"Breakings News" should go retail in September which looks really good so I'll be getting that (my first EE DVD). Hopefully CD WOW will stock it.

It looks better than the existing HK DVD as it has an exclusive R4 director interview but loses out on the deleted scene (note not scenes) from the HK DVD. The extras are also all English subtitled of course. Both have DTS.

I heard a rumour Tartan own the UK R2 rights but even if this were true they don't create new extras so the most it would get are the same extras the HK DVD has (which are slim and looking less than the R4).

You may not have to. More in a minute.

Ong-Bak details up at DVD Times, nothing we don't know already:

http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=57723

I asked Chris at Madman recently:

Some questions please now things are nearer the time:

1. Any news on the retail date for 'Breaking News'?
2. Taegukgi - What cut are you using? (Director's or Korean Theatrical)?
3. Will Taegukgi have DTS?

His reply:

1. October 19
2. It's the slightly longer DC version. We're using a film-PAL transfer, so the sped-up running time will be 143 mins.
3. Yeah should be DTS with the DD

I should also mention that our release will be 2 discs, with approx 2.5 hours of extras on the bonus disc!

How long is the PA version of Taeguki? :?
That Ozzy rating (can't be peeled off as its not a sticker) really destroys the cover of OB, IMO.
That probably beats PA then as far as having the unaltered Thai cut goes (though PA will have DTS).
