The Legend of Bruce Lee

Post by grim_tales »

Cast looks great:

Kwok-Kwan Chan (the guy who played the goalie in Shaolin Soccer) is playing Bruce. Cast also includes Gary Daniels, Mark Dacascos, Ray Park and Michael Jay White.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1059455/

Not scheduled to be shown til Summer '08 in China (according to Imports Forum).

There's already a trailer out for it on Youtube I think. I'll look for a link after this message. Anyway, I saw the trailer and to be honest, it looks pretty piss-poor and lame as hell.
"ooh... I love you"
"You! get out!"

It's a tv series btw, and not a movie.

True, that dialogue is cheesy. it wasn't helped by my not understanding the Cantonese in the trailer.

Great another Bruce Lee rip off

I would be interested in seeing a better attempt at a Bruce Lee story though. I've never felt Dragon told the whole story.

As Yi says it's a TV series, and seems to be all about Bruce's life (?) It's not like Bruce was plonked in an unrelated story.

I didn't realise that but Asian TV shows rarely get international releases and when they do they're cut to shreds. I'd prefer a better made movie tbh.

Dragon was an awfull movie. Horrible. Jason Scott Lee is nothing like the real Bruce. I dont mean just his skills, cause that's a given, but also his personality.

If you wanna learn about Bruce, just read the books about him and by him. Including his letters and all that. Dragon is kinda the fairytail Disney version of the rise and fall of a martial arts superstar... but it isnt really about Bruce Lee IMHO.
They throw in too much bullshit that isnt real and never happened.

Talking about asian TV shows, Yuen Biao's TV series Wing Chun (starring Nic Tse as the lead, and also featuring Sammo!) looks way more interesting.

Then explain to us the majority Western releases of anime TV shows on DVD? Uncut, uncensored, with the original language audio track + English subs as an option.

I wouldn't go that far Yi but do pretty much agree with you about Dragon. Jason Scott Lee was definitely the wrong person for the job.

I've read some of Bruce Letter's. I have them in a Kung Fu magazine from the 1970s that I found in a Bangkok market. It was about £1 (I think) I couldn't resist.

Are you being a dickhead again?

Explain to us why you have to challenge everything everyone says in some deluded fashion to make yourself look clever

As a movie, Dragon is OK. As a biopic, it's utter shite, as it isnt a truthfull rendition of Bruce Lee nor his life.

Sure it's 'entertaining': it's got fights, it's got the rise and fall of a man who battles against the odds to come out on top and become a legend. It's got the romance and racist troubles, etc etc.

I dont think I would call it a bad 'movie', cause it's not. And Jason Scott Lee does a fine acting job.

The main problem is that this is SUPPOSED to be a biopic, and it fails miserably. Jason Scott Lee, while being a proper actor and doing some nice fight scenes, does NOT resemble Bruce Lee (just like Will Smith, who did a good acting job, does NOT resemble Ali), and the movie isnt a faithfull portrayal of Bruce Lee's life. Sadly.

And yeah, it's a shame asian TV series arent made available for a western audience more often. My girlfriend and her sister, and actually pretty much every asian/chinese family I know, regularly like watching chinese/korean TV dramas on DVD. But many of them come without english subs.

Luckily, Yuen Biao's Wing Chun and Real Kung Fu have been released 2 weeks orso ago in the USA on DVD, uncut, with english subs.
Sadly, Wing Chun is widescreen but not anamorphic. But it IS region-free. So I'm still thinking about picking that up. The show is supposedly very good, but maybe it's better to wait for a HD OR anamorphic version to be released.

If you want to see how laughable Jason Scott Lee's performance was, then just compare Dragon's recreation of hall of the mirrors set-piece (from Enter the Dragon) to the real thing.

to be fair Shannon Lee and the Bruce Lee estate are involved in the making of this. As for Dragon it's wildly innacurate but very entertaining imo.have a soft spot for it also because it opened at no 1 usa box office, which i thought was quite cool, not many "biopics" do that. :) the dvd is cut in reg 2, reg 1 is uncut but non- anamorphic sadly.as it's a universal movie A HD-DVD for me can't be far off

I'd really like to see a better DVD of Dragon The Bruce Lee Story. The current one is one of the poorest major studio DVDs I've seen. Good extras but the picture quality is awful
