Gedo Senki (Tales from Earthsea): 2 / 5

A bad Ghibli film. Didn't know this was even possible.

The plot isn't too bad, the music is adequate (I miss Joe Hisaishi, though) and the pace is just about right (a bit on the slow side, but still enjoyable).

My main gripe with this film has to do with the animation itself.
Hayao Miyazaki always finds new ways to raise the bar and expand on what can be done with japanese anime, but his son Goro isn't even trying here.
Apart from a few nice-looking computer-generated clouds, there's nothing new in this film.
I'd even go as far as saying that Nausicaa (1983) looks better. Running animals cast no shadows, dragons flying at low altitude have no effect on the grass... it's like there's no quality control whatsoever.

The other problem is character-related.
The main character is violent (almost psychopathic) and unsympathetic. + the fact that he looks a bit like Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke only makes it worse. And since his motivation isn't clearly explained, it's difficult to identify with him.
All the other characters are fine, though. Therru is highly reminiscent of San from Princess Mononoke and she's without a doubt the most interesting character in this film.

What else is wrong ?
-Important plot threads are discarded before they're complete.
-There's no originality or ambition in the script, the animation or the editing.
-The best scenes seem to have been lifted straight from Hayao Miyazaki's previous films.
-The action scenes have no suspense or tension of any kind.

Lower your expectations and watch Gedo Senki like you would watch an animated film from Disney.
Maybe you'll like it. Just don't expect a groundbreaking masterpiece.
Talent really does skip a generation...

This is pretty good. It should've been way funnier though. I liked Nolte's foul mouth, it reminded me of a time when Cop movies were allowed to be foul mouthed.

It's a shame the sequel is a bit of a turkey. There's nothing wrong without it outright it's just totally unmemorable. Then so is the first one a bit. It's also annoying thanks to Paramount the DVDs are still non-anamorphic rubbish.

Beverly Hills Cop these films are not!

That's because James Horner is a lazy cunt who recycles his scores.

You'll also find the same music used in Another 48 Hrs (which is fair enough...) and Clear and Present Danger.

I can understand Murphy/Nolte not liking each other but when Nolte racially insults him calling him "watermelon" etc

It is good fun though and in a sense its un PC-ness is refreshing

the region 2 and the old region 1 of 48 hrs are definitely not anamorphic. the new double feature definitely is.i don't know which disc you saw?

That's why as you say it's refreshing, despite ironically the film being made in the 80's. Red Heat was on ITV3 or was it ITV 4 the other day. That's a forgotten Arnie classic. That has the usual racial 80's expletives, Belushi is great. It's way better than the very overrated Commando.

Commando is not "over-rated." Everyone knows its a poorly made film, with rubbish plot, acting etc. There are certain factors as to why people like it. The main thing is that it is a lot of fun, and one of the first (if not the first) Arnie movies where he delivers the corny one liners which would later become his trademark. The second factor is that, if you are a certain age, and you grew up in the 80s (when this became a vhs classic for a lot of 8-12 year old kids), then it is likely that you will you always have a soft spot for Commando. Personally, I remember being around 8-9 years old, coming in from school, and watching my Commando vhs video many times a week. These were the innocent times before I discovered porn, mind.

Fair enough Bruce I understand where you're coming from. The trouble is, for me even if I had been a fan then I'd still see it has utter tosh today. I didn't watch Commando as a kid but other films I loved then I do not today.

Lemon no koro (Japan, 2007) – 3/5
What an unbelievable coincidence. Yesterday a friend told me about a cute girl named Mitsuki Tanimura. Today I watch Lemon no koro, and after being impressed by the performance of a certain super sweet girl in it, I go find out who she was. Turns out her name was Mitsuki Tanimura... Anyway, she’s the best thing about this rather decent mainstream school drama. The first 30 minutes is weak but I started enjoying the film after that. It never gets too special, appart from a few moments with Mitsuki, but it’s also far from the worst of its kind. The cinematography is pretty nice, too. The ending is a bit sugary but I liked it nevertheless.

The subscript was titled "The Graduates" but I had never heard of such title before. Pure luck I clicked the link and found out it it was the same movie.

Insanity and ingeniousness can be hard to tell apart. What is sure however is that Riki Takeuchi’s beyond-this-world performance as the host of a japanese TV cooking show can cause the viewer physical injuries. Just try not to fall from your chair following the man raising the bets everytime they let him in front of the camera. The actual storyline is about two brothers (Ryuhei Matsuda and Arata) separated as kids, who have both grown up to be world class chefs. Yu Yamada and her lovely shorts play the female lead. Too bad the film suffers from several flaws, such as the dull first half, which leaves no choise but to take away some points from the film’s rating. But there’s still a lot to enjoy, and no one can take away Yu’s pants.
