Why have Fong Sai Yuk & Fong Sai Yuk 2 been forgotten?

Post by bradavon »

I finally watched Tai-Chi Master the other day and it got me wondering where are decent Fong Sai Yuk & Fong Sai Yuk 2 DVDs?

Tai-Chi Master has had a decent French DVD for sometime. Fist of Legend has had a decent French DVD for sometime. Both will at some point get decent English friendly versions from Dragon Dynasty.

Dragon Dynasty is soon to release Li's Bodyguard from Beijing.

Black Mask has a decent Hong Kong DVD, Swordsman 2 has a decent Hong Kong and UK DVD. My Father Is a Hero also has a decent Hong Kong DVD. The first three Once Upon a Time in China films have decent DVDs from the UK and Hong Kong. The Master has a decent UK DVD, as does Hitman. Last Hero in China and Kung Fu Cult Master even have decent UK DVDs.

But what about Fong Sai Yuk & Fong Sai Yuk 2?

AFAIK no decent version exists period and none is on the cards, no studios have picked up the rights. The HK DVD while an improvement on Tai-Chi Master (not difficult) are still a joke.

It was a real joy to not have to watch Tai-Chi Master for the first time on the excuse of a DVD from Universe Laser. I watched the French DVD with added English fan subs. TFI did a fantastic job of remastering it. As to Tai-Chi Master the comedy section went on for to long and was a bit of a bore but otherwise it was decent, great action. It's a pity Yeoh wasn't given more to do.

Back on topic it's a shame I am going to have to watch Fong Sai Yuk & Fong Sai Yuk 2 for the first time on my joke of DVDs from Universe Laser.

p.s - I realise I maybe using the word "decent" rather loosely but you get the idea.

I assume Miramax still have the DVD rights to the Fong Sai Yuk films. They renamed it The Legend.

I think they do too.

It's a shame The Weinstein's didn't manage to take all the Jet Li films with them. The Miramax versions don't count IMO. As bad as the Universe Laser versions are I'd rather watch those than the Miramax versions.

I think Weinstein does have these, assuming their release was direct to video. Disney still have the films released to cinemas

Really? Great. Any links?

I suspect it will be ages before any release though. Bodyguard from Beijing is coming first. FOL and Tai Chi Master have been mentioned but nothing at all on the FSY films.

I would throw in my 2 pennies, but TBH everyone already knows my opinion on the matter.

In short: Harvey Weinstein should be shot in the face. Multiple times.

edit: BTW... they (DD) were supposed to release Tai Chi Master this november, and Fist of Legend (2 disc) following in December, right!?
I was pessimistic, and everyone told me to shut up and stop being so negative.

Now where are they!? Havent seen them announced to be released these coming months. Gee... how could I have been so negative(!)

If Weinstein was dead then there would be no Dragon Dynasty and no chance of either getting released ;) . Be patient Mr. Yi-Long they'll come.

HKL's release dates rarely turned out to be accurate. I don't imagine Dragon Dynasty are any different. There could be valid reasons for their delay. As long as they're coming I'm happy to wait.

Does Weinstein even have much say on these releases? I'd guess it's almost entirely down to Logan and White.

I Weinstein would have been dead (and the world would have been a better place without him, that's for sure), he wouldnt have bought the rights to so many classics, but other companies would have picked them up, and hopefully THEY WOULD have released these movies uncut and subbed (read: properly).

His nickname isnt Scissorhands for nothing, Brad. He's a bad guy for asian cinema. There is absolutely NOTHING he has done that has improved the status of asian cinema in the west. In fact, I dare to state he has hampered the popularity of asian cinema in the west.

That's only been around for 1 year now, hasnt it? It's about time.
It looks promising that such a label now finally exists, but it's certainly not perfect yet.
