Korean Remake of "The Killer" planned

Post by bradavon »

Director John H. Lee, who last film was the 2004 Korean film A Moment to Remember, has been been chosen to remake the Hong Kong classic The Killer.

As one would expect with a remake, lead actor Chow Yun Fat will replaced with a Korean actor and the setting will shift from Hong Kong to Los Angeles.

Long time John Woo producing partner explains that the new film will move the story throughout LA's Koreatown, Chinatown and South Central.

Hmmm... do we really need a 100% remake. It would be interesting if the story was inspired by "The Killer" and not 100% a remake.

To grant your wish all they'd have to do is leave out Woo's homoerotic undertones.

So many people wonder if Woo is gay, even some of his actors do. Well, some call the themes in his films homoerotic. But is love between very close friends necessarily homoerotic? And why erotic? In which of his films are men caressing each other? In "A Better Tomorrow", they hug in the parking garage. Wow! How gay. Two very close friends hug after they haven't seen each other for 3 years. How ordinary would the film be if Ho's or Mark Gor's characters were written as women.

Woo is fascinated by the theme of close friendships between men, brotherhoods that are so strong that the individuals are ready to sacrifice anything, even their own life to rescue the other one. Doesn't necessarily make such a person gay in my opinion.

I never got all the talk about homo-erotic stuff in his movies either. Never.
I guess people see what they wanna see. Like LD says, it's just friends in difficult situations.

Anyway, I'm not a huge fan of The Killer, mainly because it just hasnt aged well, and Danny Lee is kinda crap in it. The main premise is cool though, so if done right, the remake could be great. I just hope they wont fill it with crap teen actors and shit like that. Suddenly Lindsay Lohan as The Killer's love interest. No thanks.

I can't find anything gay in The Killer.

Unless they've recently located the missing feltching sequence?

I believe they cut out all the 'teabagging' sequences whenever Chow Yun Fat shot some bad guys...

If a remake has to be made I'm much more excited about it being made by a Far East Asian director than American director.

Woo is a protoge of Chang Cheh, whose films are full of male bonding. Chang was hassled in later life by accusations of homosexuality by rival critics and jaded academics

A lot of critics seem incapable of understanding Woo's sensitive portrayal of male bonding. These are probably the same people who think belching and lighting your own farts is manly behaviour.

They'd be the same people who couldn't get over Brokeback Mountain being a "Gay Cowboy" film.

This has the potential to be great, the Killers story is excellent. I don't think the execution is up there as much as the rest of you though. Decent enough though.

That movie was about gay shepherds, not cowboys.

why remake it? It's still great :? will watch it though but feel It's totally un necessary. I do prefer LD's idea of inspired by the killer rather than a strict remake

I feel The Killer hasnt aged well. The jackets and the hair etc... it just looks very OLD. Hard Boiled has aged MUCH better.

So I'm not opposed to a remake of The Killer, if it's done right.

Is the story original enough to warrant a remake?

I mean there must be many movies with a similar plot made before and after The Killer.

It's like trying to remake a story about a cop who avenges his best friend killed by scummy drug dealers.

The Killer is the big name though.

Does it have to? Manhunter looks very dated but that's part of it's charm and it doesn't stop it being brilliant.

As I don't think The Killer is the masterpiece most do I'm actually looking forward to this.

In some movies I dont mind the dated look. Hell, if it's filmed well and everything still looks clean etc, it's all good. But with The Killer it's kinda ... I dont know... it just looks bad.
Maybe it's because it looks so overly stylized, yet extremely out od date. Chow Yun Fat in his pimping white gear and the slick hair etc... it looks... cartoonishly bad. :)

And like you, I am also not a huge fan of the movie. I prefer Woo's other classics, like A Better Tomorrow, Hard Boiled, and Bullet in the Head.

Why don't they remake some shit HK movies?

Plenty of those.

They always seem to fuck up the classics.

I think it's better to ABT. I didn't much like ABT/ABT2. Hard Boiled is better though agreed. I've yet to see BITH. I know I need to.

Looking aged isn't a bad thing IMO. The Don Johnson shell suits with bright primary colours (or white) and Top Gun aviator sunnies just add to the film's charm IMO.
