they can put whatever soundtrack they like on this piece of shit movie-more pretentious crap from an overrated director.thank god he never got his hands on the Batman franchise.gasteropod wrote:Fox don't suck ass that much - their UK BD of 'The Fountain' has a DTS HD track and is in 1.85:1 (the Warner US doesn't and is 1.78:1).

Regarding Die Hard 3, I recently upgraded to a 42" plasma TV, and I browsed thru my DVD collection. As said above, DH3 looks like shit. The EE is atrocious when viewed on a big screen.
I know it's not my TV, because I put for reference some DVDs I remastered, and of course, they only had a very small amount of EE applied, looking way better than DH3 which looked like viewing a movie with plastic characters.
In that original box set collection, 1 & 2 also look like shit, btw, sometimes, you'd better off with you small 28" 16/9 TV from the mid-nineties

No, I'm a freelancer, and I supervise remastering old old movies or TV series for DVD release, I only do work on HD, even if it's for a SD release. Amongst some of the films I did are Crying Freeman movie with Mark Dacascos, 2 DVD collections in france. I don't work often because I'm a hassle to work with, (people don't like to redo everything once they think they are done hahaha) but in the end, it always looks great
I'm currently doing the "nouvelles aventures of Vidocq" french TV series. It's 16mm, but of course, we are doing it in HD, and believe me it will look astonishing

What do you mean by "others" ? I never did HK releases, if that's what you mean, they miss english subs due to legalities, sadly. I believe some people in other european countries were really upset about the longer version of The Killer with the original english subs
I'm not speaking of the buyers...

All the other DVDs of Crying Freeman are awful. The French release is the only one worth owning.dvdvision wrote:What do you mean by "others" ?
I've heard that before but who makes the law? What English subs in particular?dvdvision wrote:they miss english subs due to legalities, sadly.
I'm not aware of any British law stating you cannot put a particular language subtitle on a DVD. I'd guess it's more a case of film studios preventing it than an actual law. I wouldn't mind but it's not as if the English language countries have actually made an effort in their place.
It's not as if they could remove them. Talk about over exaggeration, it would only mean a few extra thousand sales, most people never ever import.dvdvision wrote:I believe some people in other european countries were really upset about the longer version of The Killer with the original english subs

Okay I asked for that one
I've still never heard of it elsewhere.
It also looks like the box set will now contain all 4 films:

I'd pick up Die Hard and Die Hard 2 for sure but Die Hard 3 is only fairly good, no way is it a keeper. Die Hard 4 is no way a keeper, ironically it's more fun than DH3 though.

I'm not sure this is true. Both Play and DVD Pacific list individual releases, a month earlier in the UK too.As of now, the three films in the 'Die Hard Trilogy' will not be made available separately.

Hi, actually yes, I believe the Killer long version with the original burn in subs upset some other publishers owning the rights to the normal version, but of course, HK were not going to burn in the optional french subs they added, they were covering about a quarter of the frame.
So the Crying Freeman remaster from France was never issued in other countries ? That's a shame, this master is beautiful, I haven't looked at it since 2001 as I spent too much work on it. I put it in for review on my new plasma, and boy, it was good for a SD !
So have the Die Hard been remastered again ? I'm curious about what masters they used this time, I hope they come edge enhancement free.

MovieTyme isn't exactly the cheapest store, on the whole. I only used that link as it was the first I found. I'm sure it can be found cheaper than £60.

It gets worse, the UK and HK DVDs are 4:3 so cropped to shreds, the German DVD is 1.78:1 anamorphic and other DVDs are non-anamorphic 2.35:1.
They may as well have added English subs to the French DVD, it's not as if anyone who would import is going to pick up those DVDs and those who don't like importing aren't going to check, and are just going to buy the local DVD. Thankfully as the film is mostly in English anyway most people just imported the French DVD and put up with no subtitles for the Japanese dialogue.

Japanese language in Crying Freeman is like maybe 2 mn of the movie, and you can understand what's going on just by the visuals. The french 2 DVDs editions is really amazing, we spend days and nights working on it, and redid it three times (everything, including the master). There's no other way to appreciate the movie.
I remember we couldn't put in english subs on the special edition DVD, because the right owners didn't want to endanger any possible contract, just by having the french DVD with subs. It was the early days of DVD (this one took three years to come out, we changed the copyright on the sleeve layout from 1999 to 2001, I remember it was funny so long it took), so people were a bit reticent to do so many subs on films.
The interesting thing is, it came out at the same time as Brotherhood of the wolf, the publisher expected 10 000 sales, it ended up selling 100 000 and they had to reprint like 4 or 5 times even before it shipped. Editor Sebastien Prangere (Brotherhood of the wolf, Silent Hill) who did all the bonuses, got so tired working with me on it, I think he slept for like 3 days after we shipped the whole thing to the pressing plant. His last hurrah was the DVD-rom section, which he delivered on his scooter at 8 in the morning after spending a whole night working on it
I told him pain didn't count. In the future, only the quality will be remembered by the public, and by god, even if this edition is not 100% perfect, I still think today it's one of those rare DVDs which as EVERYTHING, and that will certainly never ever be double dipped, (except of course on HD). We aimed not to shortchange the public. They got it all. There's nothing left. Except of course an upgrade to HD, and since the master was HD...

I remember that Brotherhood of the wolf DVD. Another one without English subs and another with a dreadful UK DVD. 1 Disc compared with 4 discs, English DD5.1 or French DD2.0. What use is that?
Thankfully the Canadians came through for us with their 4 Disc port of the French DVD adding English subs for the lot bar commentaries. The UK HD-DVD has French 5.1. Things are different today though, if released today the UK Brotherhood of the wolf DVD wouldn't just get DD2.0.

If only all studios thought that way. One thing where French DVDs do fall down seriously against UK DVDs is in the price. They can be ridiculously expensive, often twice the price. We aimed not to shortchange the public.

I can only go by web prices not having access to French stores but the prices usually stay static at Amazon and Mediadis (who're Belgium), which are the only two websites I've used that sell French DVDs.
They're sold initially for €35/£24 and stick at that. Whereas UK/USA DVDs are initially sold for £13/€18 and then after 6 months drop by 50%. As you can see even the initial price is 50% less.
Many UK studios nowadays are as good as French ones but they charge a lot less. I only own a handful of French DVDs for that reason.
I own the TFI "In the Mood for Love" as that happened to have English subs (I paid over £20 for it). The DVD then got ported all over Europe, including Spain and the UK. None with the lovely French packaging though.

The lowers prices are mainly in french shops, they do discount sales, "special operations" as they call it, akin to clearance sales regulary. This does not affect online retailers like amazon.fr. When they do these, you can still find the DVD at full price in the general racks, but discounted in special racks.
