Hi, according to what I know, HK use the best transferts they can find. If they get send a badly done transfert, they flatly refuse to issue it, and hassle the copyrights owners until they get something decent. That's one of the reasons their DVDs take a long time to come out. They refuse to settle for second best.

The recent Jackie dvds by (forgot the company name, had something to do with HKV I think, Tom explain again please) apparently used FS materials but the (unreliable) screencaps (I posted links a few pages back) looked like crap...

The recent Jackie DVDs are from Seven Sept.
They belong to TF1 just like HK Vidéo, but they don't really give a shit about quality (I'm just guessing).

AFAIK: HK Vidéo still use Media Asia transfers for some of their DVDs, but they have moved to FS print for most of the recent ones.

Hi, you got it wrong, I worked for both Seven Sept and Metropolitan films, they don't belong to TF1 AT ALL. TF1 is just the distributor of some of their DVDs. TF1 have no say in anything done at either Seven Sept, HK or Metropolitan.

Update:

Kaze is going to release Shinobi on december 5th.
Normally I wouldn't waste my bandwidth on this sort of news, but this time it's special.

It's on HD-DVD !!!

I'm gonna buy a Toshiba EP-30 just so I can watch this film in HD. :D

I didn't mind shinobi, but it's a piss poor adaptation of the source material (think of every wtf? why do that? moment in the film and you can guarantee its been added to the film only). The Basilisk anime series is a faithful adaptation of the manga afaia and it is far, far superior.

Shinobi was nothing to right home about. Utterly average and totally forgettable.

What I've seen of the Basilisk anime is surprisingly decent, considering that it's by Gonzo. No doubt they stuffed it up somewhere, like they normally do.

20 days late for my reply... sorry 'bout that, Hung. :D
Yes I am aware. Looks awesome.

Let's stick with HD for a minute.
I have a very interesting list here.

HD-DVD Exclusive studios:
-France Télévision.
-Kaze (Shinobi).
-Paramount.
-Studio Canal (Ran).
-Universal.
-Wild Side Vidéo (most Shaw Brothers titles, Baby Cart, Zatoichi, etc...).

Blu-Ray Exclusive studios:
-Buena Vista, Disney, Touchstone.
-Europa Corp.
-Fox.
-Gaumont.
-MGM.
-Opening Vidéo.

Format neutral studios:
-MK2.
-M6 Vidéo.
-TF1.
-Warner.

Unknown at the moment:
-HK Vidéo.
-CTV.

------------

With Studio Canal, Wild Side and Kaze on its side, HD-DVD is sure to win the hearts of many asian film lovers over here. :)

Update:

For Curse of the Golden Flower fans out there:
You know this film is Blu-Ray exclusive in The States because it belongs to Sony, but in France it belongs to Warner.

So:

Are Warner including any English subs on Curse of the Golden Flower and any type of extras?

I hope it has Dolby True-HD or DTS-HD and not just DD Plus (any ideas?). If not it doesn't mean much to me when the Blu-Ray has PCM Lossless. That said unless it turns out to have more extras I'd just pick up the USA BD.

The USA cover is rubbish though, not that I really care.
Studio Canal (Ran).
These often get ported over to the UK Optimum label who're now format neutral. They were just HD-DVD before.

The CotGF HD-DVD was released last week.

I've found the specs, but somehow I don't trust them...

Double-layer HD-DVD.
2.0 (!!) DTS-HD Master Audio track in french and mandarin.
Removable french subtitles (no english AFAIK).
20-minute making-of feature.

Might as well answer my own question...

It's january 15th for the Chinese Ghost Story trilogy.

Chinese Ghost Story, Better Tomorrow... The only big thing missing is Fong Sai-Yuk 1 & 2 now. :D

I believe these two belongs to studio canal ? I had their old 2 disc set, but sold it, it played like crap on my plasma, the compression was horrible.

HK Vidéo showed a couple of clips from Fong Sai-Yuk 1 & 2 on the extras disc of Tai-Chi Master.

I naturally assumed that FSY belonged to them.

Yeah where the bloody hell are they? I cannot believe in 2007 the best versions are still the god awful HK DVDs.

Did they look good on the Tai Chi Master DVD?

hey,

always interesting that France has a way of making their money back after remastering, especially in regards to smaller titles like ETERNAL COMBAT. :)
