"Cause" (Birth of Hero) DVD out on UK R2 next week

Post by grim_tales »

According to Play, the big long documentary "Cause" about the making of "Hero" will be released next week (28/2/05). Play have it for £11.99.

Is it worth getting/watching? Its' over 2.5 hours so seems OK-ish value IMO, even if I only saw it once I could always trade it.. ;)
Is it a good documentary?

I have the scandinavian dvd and I love it.

But I think you need to love the film and the actors to really appreciate this documentary.

It covers pretty much everything:
-Casting.
-Screenwriting.
-Location scouting.
-Shooting.
-Post-production.
...and much much more.

Worth getting ? Yes.
Worth £11.99 ? Don't know

But I remember I paid £16 when the scandinavian dvd came out.
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

:D

"foi" literally means "faith".

"Ma foi" is an expression. I don't know exactly how to translate it, but it's a way to confirm things.

For example:
Oui -> Yes.
Ma foi, oui. -> Yes, I do / Yes, I am.
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".

Cool I might get this... I've given up trying to buy a decent version of Hero.

If I get the J-DVD (cheapish) plus this then yeah, it'll make me happy.

The HK DVD is decent it's not as decent as the Japanese DVD.

Nice find Grim. Good idea go on e-mail CD WOW make sure you explain how pleased we'd all be if they did. I'd pick it up for sure.

It's now £12 delivered from DVDoo, the Scandinavian DVD that is:

http://www.dvdoo.com/dvdoo/film.asp?Command=12872

It was over £20 when it first came out about a year ago. It's £10.99 from DVD Popcorn who I can recommend:

http://www.dvdpopcorn.com/DVDDetails.as ... ctID=55290

And £7.99 from ThatzDVD assuming they actually get it in and it's not ripped to shreds:

http://www.thatzdvd.com/2003_dvd_detail ... e_id=98720

p.s - I prefer the Scandinavian cover art but I'd probably get it from DVD Popcorn (or CD WOW).

There is a top German DC DVD of this:

http://www.dvdanswers.com/index.php?p=info&c=6752

What a pity. I was hoping for a decent DC DVD at last but I guess it's not to be.

I can't see myself learning German anytime soon. Still it's lacking DTS (in the OST) and the HD version doesn't interest me (bar a quick glimpse) so it's not to bad. I bet the HD version looks amazing though.

I bet the 3 hour Making of. is the excellent Cause documentary.

brad, an OST is an Original Soundtrack CD.

I'll be ordering the German release if I hear good reports about the HD disc, there's no reason for anyone not to. You have to play these on yuor PC anyway so adding a subtitle script is no problem.
At the moment the Japanese DVD of "Hero" is the best by far.

This documentary looks okay but I'd only buy iy for say £5 or so. That's extra material as far as I'm concerned, and even seperately it's certainly not worth £10.99 imo. I'll wait a while and pick it up or rent it (asked the companies I use to get this).

It can be but literally OST means Original Soundtrack and dubbing immediately means it can't be the OST!

Besides I said OST not OST CD!

Lourdes the Scandinavian DVD is now £8.81 from DVDoo (including postage which works out cheaper if you get a second/third title). It's the same as the UK DVD bar the language on the menus and cover art of course. It has English subs.

p.s - You could order it with the Korean film "Friend" which has a second disc of English subtitled extras! Which is about £5.

OR even "Sword in the Moon" which is nice and cheap.

I was insulted enough when you suggested that I buy "Friend" but "Sword in the Moon?" How dare you sir!

I'll make a note of that, not a big fan of Hero but I do like Doyle even if he's a repetitive and pretentious t**t.

OMG Doyle is a master cinematographer!

I've not seen either film so can't comment on how good they are. There are many other cheap (many with English subs) Asian films here:

Okay, okay the "t**t" bit is completely uncalled for and he isn't at all. Although if I only knew him by his style I'd certainly apply that title.

I've seen pretty much every Doyle related film, short etc, and once you've seen so much you'll know what I mean. He was fresh once but these days he uses the same old tricks over and over and through his reputation he has far too much sway with directors. It's most evident in films like "Rabbit Proof Fence" where he seems to sieze upon the oppurtunity presented by a poor script and acting to play about and let the film gain acclaim through style. Like I said I like his work and I appreciate it to this day, however, I no longer enjoy films that he has worked on so much because of this great level of pretention along with the repetition of techniques over and over. There's much less innovation now and away from the company of WKW and William Chang he's not very special. You can really feel it in the films, "Fallen Angels" is always my favourite example. Watch something like "Last Life..." or "Hero" and then watch that. The difference is quite incredible as are the similarities.

"Rabbit Proof Fence" gained acclaim because of the harrowing story. It could've been a cartoon (probably) and still be acclaimed. It's not perfect but a decent 7 out of 10 IMO.

I'll be watching "Ashes of Time" tonight on my WKW marathon next is "Fallen Angels" so it will be interesting to see if I agree with you. "Hero" maybe simply done (i.e - not really clever) but it's still gorgeous to watch.

OMG according to IMDB he shot Infernal Affairs but wasn't credited.

Agh, just lost the post I wrote. :(

That "harrowing story" was terribly presented in the form of dull but beautiful Doyle moments and Branagh acting so poorly I didn't recognise him at all. I was quite disappointed by the film, not surprising come to think of it. But I was really hoping it would be one of those films that inspires the whle industry of that country and gets good world recognition. Instead it's more like an attempt to do that and somewhat contrived considering the cast and crew.

I feel in love when I first saw "Fallen Angels" late on BBC2 years ago. And each time I watch it I have the same feeling of giddy excitement, it never gets old for me. My favourite WKW film, my favourite Doyle film and I think it's just incredible and it's onew of very few films that I can just put on and watch any part of quite happily. I'll spare you any further gushing because I could go on forever.

Doyle was credited as "Visual Consultant" on "Infernal Affairs" and was nominated for "Visual Effects" at the Golden Horse awards. However Andrew Lau says he was only involved with some technical pre-production work, but to contradict this Doyle says he shot for several days and was a full visual consultant. The cinematography of IA impressed me and had a Doyle feel during some moments. However this was continued throughout the trilogy and Lau was a cinematographer on "2046" IIRC, nt to mention "Chungking Express." So I don't know what to make of that, though I suspect Doyle did more than Lau claims, perhaps a poor translation or some sort of misunderstanding.

Some of the the blame needs to go to the director also. Don't even get me started on Australia's human rights history and lack of apology.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I saw Zhang Ziyi on the MTV Movie Awards 2005. She looked really nervous speaking English. They pronounced her name completely wrong. Firstly it was Yiyi Zhang which I can live with but the guy couldn't even say Zhang right.

Anyway it looks like she's trying to break the American market. I wonder when "Memoirs of a Geisha" is out?

Their apology is to blame the British. :)

She's already well known in the US. Expecting nothing from "Memoirs of a Geisha" personally, especially with her in it.

LOL probably even though they're a few hundred years to late.

Not on a big scale. Which I doubt will ever change. She's not White and not Western.
